Lowered high temperatures significantly given low-level cloud cover, snow, and fog over much of the Plains region especially. Cancelled the Winter Weather Advisory for the northern Rocky Mountain Front with heavy snow band having moved east of the area. Will likely be able to cancel the advisory early for Toole, Teton, and Pondera counties given snow band beginning to significantly weaken. Given cooler temperatures and approaching disturbance with good upper level dynamics, we have decided to issue a Winter Weather Advisory mainly from US Highway 87 south and east over the Plains, as well as higher elevations and passes of Gallatin, Madison, and Beaverhead Counties. Expect a band of snow to develop by late this afternoon and move quickly east through the remainder of the CWA. Cassell && .AVIATION... UPDATED 1803Z. Given a quickly evolving and convective nature to the weather today, significant changes to the TAFs were made for a few sites through this evening, primarily at KHVR/KGTF/KLWT/KHLN. A cold front has moved south through KGTF and KHVR and should eventually move through KHLN/KLWT later today. This should keep low CIGS and, at times, BR, where this exists already, with lowering CIGS likely later today elsewhere. This is a change from the previous forecast as the front has moved in quicker. In addition, there is a band of moderate to heavy snow near KMSO at this time that short term model guidance shifts east across parts of the forecast area later today and this evening and I have adjusted TAFs accordingly where confidence is highest in more significant impacts to aviation. Given previous SFC obs earlier this morning, the potential exists for lower VIS at any site that is impacted by the next band of snow and we will monitor trends closely through this evening. It should be noted that if the band of snow holds together, snowfall rates may be high enough to put down a quick inch or two in a short amount of time. Across SW MT, the precip may be more showery in nature and some LTG cannot be ruled out as it should be more unstable in that area. Conditions should improve from west to east overnight. Martin && .PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 535 AM MST Sun Mar 5 2017/ Today through Monday...Areas of fog and light to moderate snow showers will continue over the northwest half of North Central Montana this morning after the passage of a Canadian cold front. The front has moved through Great Falls and Havre, cooling them below freezing. This frontal boundary will retreat to just north of Great Falls this afternoon, keeping the colder air over the Rocky Mountain Front and its adjacent plains. Latest forecast models keep the potential for an additional 1 to 2 inches over those adjacent plains, with another 2 to 5 inches in the mountains. Will therefore expand the Winter Weather Advisory from just the northern Rocky Mountain Front and eastern Glacier County south and east over the rest of the Rocky Mountain Front and Teton/Pondera Counties, as well as Toole County. Scattered rain and snow showers will also spread into Southwest Montana by this afternoon, but snow accumulations in the mountains will remain fairly light. As the front and its associated shortwave trough exit the area to the east this evening, the band of snow will move east across the forecast area, bringing periods of light to moderate snow to the rest of North Central Montana. A somewhat unstable westerly flow aloft in the wake of the shortwave will keep scattered snow showers mainly over the mountains. A few showers may move out onto the plains, but breezy westerly downslope winds will keep any snowfall on the light side. Temperatures today will remain near normal across much of the area, but temperatures across the northwest half of North Central Montana will struggle to get out of the 20s. Below normal temperatures are then expected into Monday with lows in the teens and highs in the mid 20s to lower 30s. Coulston Monday night through Sunday...A rather significant change in the forecast has occurred to the extended forecast period. The forecast models have shifted towards a snowy/much colder weather pattern...especially starting Thursday night through Sunday. Until Thursday...several upper level disturbances will move through the region from Monday night through Thursday morning...producing scattered periods of light rain/snow. Most of the accumulating snow will be confined to mountains during this period...where 1 to 3 inches seem reasonable. Afternoon temperatures will be about 5 degrees below normal on Tuesday...only to warm to a few degrees above normal on Wednesday. On Thursday...a fairly deep upper level trof will develop over the region...as a strong area of surface high pressure moves southward from Alaska towards the Midwest. A boundary of warm/cold air will set up over Southwest MT...resulting in periods of accumulating snow across the region from Thursday afternoon through Sunday. Some rain could mix in the valleys of Southwest MT...limiting snowfall amounts down there a bit. Even though our forecast temperatures for Fri thru Sun are about 10 degrees warmer than the 00z GFS model...the current forecast is about 15 to 25 degrees colder than what was forecasted yesterday. Given this significant change for Thu through Sunday...overall forecasted temperatures are not as cold as some guidance and pops are not as high...thus adjustments to the forecast for later this week will occur once timing/strength of the weather systems becomes a bit more clear.
