A stationary front extends along the Rocky Mountain Front, through
Great Falls, and along Hwy 87 toward Lewistown. There is about a 30
degree temperature difference across the front over just a few
miles, so temperatures in this area may fluctuate through the day.
Radar indicates very light snow along the Continental Divide, and
over the North-central plains between Great Falls and Havre.
Downslope westerly winds are suppressing any snowfall between Hwy 89
and I15. Up to around 1/2 inch of new snow is possible for some
areas today, with 1-3 inches in the central mountains. Overall
forecast remains in good shape, so issued only minor updates to
better match observed trends. PN

We will end the year on a cold and snowy note for many areas. The
coldest air will be found over the plains of Central Montana. The
heaviest snow will likely be focused over the Central Montana as

.PREV DISCUSSION...
/ISSUED 455 AM MST Wed Dec 27 2017/

Today...Light snow will develop over the mountains today as the
first in a series of upper-level shortwaves and approaching surface
cold front move over the Northern Rockies. A cold airmass remains in
place across north-central Montana, however along the Rocky Mountain
Front and southwest Montana, temperatures will moderate as surface
winds shift westerly. Areas of blowing and drifting snow are
possible in these downslope areas with snow amounts of 1 to 3 inches
expected at and above pass level. MLS

Tonight through Saturday...A somewhat suppressed upper level
ridge over the southern Pacific will allow a persistent and strong
jet to remain over the Pac NW/northern Rockies this week. Several
shortwaves embedded within this jet will traverse the area, with
the strongest expected FRI/SAT. The initial waves look to produce
generally light overrunning-type snow (but higher along the
Continental Divide). This is then followed by the stronger wave
later in the week. It should be noted that the models agree on the
strength of the wave, but differ on the exact track which makes a
fairly decent difference regarding snowfall amounts/intensity.
The current forecast, then, is a collaborated effort between
neighboring offices and WPC. All the collaboration early this
morning is much appreciated! At this point, it appears the
highest snowfall amounts will be focused along a frontal boundary
that stretches from Cut Bank to Billings and is where confidence
in reaching 6-12 inch amounts is highest. In the mountains,
confidence is high that 1 to 2 feet will fall. Across SW MT,
snowfall amounts are somewhat less certain as drier air may
undercut snowfall rates/amounts at times. Even over the plains,
the models indicate some dry air may cause areas of less snow at
times.

With all that said, confidence is high enough to go ahead and issue
a Winter Storm Watch for our entire CWA, with the expectation that
specific snowfall amounts and timing of greatest impacts will be
refined in coming days. The main message here is much of the area
will see a prolonged period of snow and associated
travel/societal/recreation impacts, with a focus on the Thursday
night through Friday night period when snowfall rates look to be

Saturday Night through Wednesday...Snow will gradually diminish
Saturday night from north to south, however impacts to travel and
outdoor activities will linger. Sunday through Wednesday will
feature quieter weather conditions under northwest flow and a
building ridge of high pressure along the West Coast. Temperatures
will remain bitter cold on Sunday with a gradual warming trend to
