Satellite imagery reveals the center of circulation for the passing upper level low now situated just north of Havre. While there are breaks in the cloud cover for some areas, there also remain numerous snow showers across the area. A few of these snow showers will produce brief but locally intense snowfall. Overall remaining new snow amounts were lowered to less than 0.5 inches, but a few spots, mainly mountain areas, could see 2 inches in heavy snow showers. Water vapor imagery and model analyses show a weaker, secondary center of circulation entering NW MT. Clouds may increase with continuing chances for snow showers through at least late afternoon as this secondary wave passes. Winter weather headlines continue as posted, although expect several adjustments with the afternoon forecast as attention turns to blowing snow and wind chill hazards tonight. PN && .SYNOPSIS... Snow will gradually end from Northwest to Southeast today. Dangerously cold temperatures in the teens below zero to 20s below zero will follow Saturday night through Sunday night, with wind chills in the 30 below zero to 45 below zero range. && .AVIATION... Updated 1700z. Highly variable flight conditions exist across the forecast area this afternoon as last night's storm exits the area. Skies have generally cleared this afternoon for KHLN/KBZN/KEKS. For North- central MT, low clouds persist MVFR conditions at KGTF. A band of snow showers along the HiLine is creating IFR/LIFR conditions in snow at KCTB/KHVR. Conditions will remain variable this afternoon and evening, particularly over North-central MT as a secondary wave passes through the area. Expect clearing and VFR conditions all terminal by Sunday morning. Will need to be aware of possible drifting and blowing snow at all terminals. PN && .PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 420 AM MST Sat Dec 30 2017/ Today through Sunday night... An Arctic front continues to retreat northeast across north- central Montana early this morning as low pressure approaches the region from the northwest. Widespread light to moderate snow will continue along and north of this front through the remainder of this morning with generally 2 to 5 inches of additional snow accumulations. South and west of this front, the character of the precipitation becomes more showery with increasing instability above the cold dome, resulting in occasionally intense yet brief snow rates. By early afternoon, the strong upper level disturbance will move south through our area and end this shower activity, with leftover light snow along the Arctic front as it moves back south. With the Arctic front dropping back south across our area will be a reinforcing shot of bitterly cold air, resulting in temperatures that will fall well into the teens below zero to 20s below zero by Sunday morning, with wind chills in the 30 below zero to 45 below zero range. Some slight moderation is expected Sunday afternoon, but temperatures will once again plummet Sunday night to near Sunday morning lows. Will likely need to consider a Wind Chill Advisory once the current advisories and warnings with the current storm are expired or cancelled. CC Monday through Friday...After a cold day on Monday, temperatures are expected to moderate, albeit gradually, Tuesday through next Saturday. This trend stems from the expectation of a high pressure ridge aloft building-in from the Pac NW. While multiple disturbances are still forecast to ripple through the ridge, there remains uncertainty regarding when many of these disturbances will traverse our CWA. Regardless, models continue to suggest meager moisture ahead of these disturbances will limit the potential of precipitation. The aforementioned pattern evolution aloft will allow the Arctic surface high pressure ridging as of late to shift generally east of our area Monday into Tuesday. This ridge will be replaced by a lee surface trough during the rest of the period, especially over North-Central MT.
