MONDAY EVENING...

.Major Hurricane Irma is now forecast to move up along the west
coast of Florida today and tonight and then across North Florida 
and South Georgia on Monday. Heavy rains associated with the 
hurricane will begin to arrive across the eastern Florida Big Bend
Sunday evening and spread northwestward across the central 
Florida Big Bend and Southwest and South Central Georgia late 
Sunday night through Monday.

Storm total rainfall is now expected to be 7 to 9 inches west of 
a Cross City to Perry to Valdosta line, 4 to 6 inches west from 
that line to Albany and Tallahassee and 2 to 4 inches northwest 
of the Flint River to the Chattahoochee River. Rainfall rates from
hurricanes can be quite high and could result in rapid flooding 
of low lying and poor drainage areas such as those in cities and 
along streams and creeks.

Tropical Storm Irma is forecast to continue moving generally north
northwest through the rest of the day. The heavy rains are
gradually diminishing over much of the Florida Big Bend with the
heaviest rainfall now occurrring in Southwest Georgia into
Southeast Alabama. An additional 2 to 4 inches of rain is possible
across the watch area, which could result in rapid flooding of

EVENING...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* Portions of south central Georgia and southwest Georgia, 
  including the following areas, in south central Georgia, Ben 
  Hill, Berrien, Colquitt, Cook, Irwin, Lanier, Lowndes, Tift, 
  Turner, and Worth. In southwest Georgia, Baker, Calhoun, Clay, 
  Dougherty, Early, Lee, Miller, Mitchell, Quitman, Randolph, 
  and Terrell. 

* Until 8 PM EDT this evening

* Tropical Storm Irma is forecast to continue moving generally
  north northwest through the rest of the day. The heavy rains are
  gradually diminishing over much of the Florida Big Bend with the
  heaviest rainfall now occurrring in Southwest Georgia into
  Southeast Alabama. An additional 2 to 4 inches of rain is
  possible across the watch area, which could result in rapid
  flooding of low lying and poor drainage areas such as those in
  cities and along streams and creeks. The rainfall will begin to
  diminish by early evening.

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.

VFR conditions through this evening and then MVFR cigs are
expected to spread across the region along with periods of light
rain. Northeasterly winds will prevail with periodic gusts
between 20 to 25 knots beginning later this morning.

.PREV DISCUSSION [340 AM EDT]...

.NEAR TERM [Through Today]...

A few showers or thunderstorms will be possible across the southeast
Big Bend where a bit more moisture resides. Otherwise, one more dry
day before conditions begin to deteriorate as Hurricane Irma
approaches from the south. It will be breezy today as the
pressure gradient tightens across our area between high pressure
to the north and Irma to the south. Winds will generally be from
the northeast at 15 mph gusting to 25 to 30 mph at times. Highs
will be in the lower to mid 80s.

.SHORT TERM [Tonight Through Monday]...

-- Overview --

Hurricane Irma will start to turn more to the northwest today at
the base of the eroding subtropical ridge. The large core of the
northern stream trough responsible for breaking down the
subtropical ridge will continue to move through the northeast into
the western Atlantic. A shortwave moving through the central
plains this afternoon will drop over the central gulf coast and
begin to pull Irma northward this evening. As Irma becomes
intertwined with the shortwave aloft, it will gradually bend into
the Tennessee Valley by Tuesday.

-- Local Impacts --

The main impacts from Irma will be wind related. Tropical storm
conditions could begin as early as Sunday afternoon in the southeast
Big Bend, spreading into the remainder of the Big Bend and south-
central Georgia Sunday night, and possible across much of the Tri-
State region on Monday.

* Wind Impacts _______________

- Sunday afternoon:

Occasional low-end tropical storm wind gusts across the SE Big Bend.

- Sunday night:

Frequent and stronger tropical storm wind gusts across the SE Big
Bend and the Suwannee Valley in GA. Isolated gusts to hurricane
force possible. Late Sunday night, tropical storm wind gusts are
expected to spread northwest to the remainder of the Florida big
bend and portions of southwest Georgia.

- Monday:

Frequent and strong tropical storm wind gusts with occasionally
sustained tropical storm force winds possible along and east of a
line from Albany through Tallahassee. Occasional hurricane force
gusts possible as well.

Occasional tropical storm force wind gusts possible west of the
Apalachicola and Chattahoochee rivers.

* Rain Forecast ________________

- 6 to 8 inches in a band from the Valdosta to Cross City area.

- 3 to 6 inches across the remainder of southwest Georgia and the
Florida big bend.

- 1 to 3 inches west of the Apalachicola and Chattahoochee rivers

.LONG TERM [Monday Night Through Saturday]...

Irma and her associated winds and rain will quickly lift out of the
region through Monday night. General troughiness will prevail across
the region for a few days after Irma, but only slight chances of
rain are expected with drier air.

.MARINE...

Irma will likely spread tropical storm conditions and possibly
hurricane conditions into the coastal waters Sunday and Monday. The
worst conditions are expected from Apalachicola eastward. It will
probably take until mid-week until winds and seas fall below
headline levels.

.FIRE WEATHER...

Transport winds and daytime dispersion will be elevated today and
Sunday as Hurricane Irma approaches. Otherwise, no fire weather
concerns.

.HYDROLOGY...

Average rainfall amounts are expected to be 6 to 8 inches in a
band from near Valdosta to Cross City with 3 to 6 inches across
the remainder of southwest Georgia and the Florida big bend and 1
to 3 inches to the west across southeast Alabama and the Florida
panhandle. Isolated higher amounts will be possible within these
areas. Significant river flooding is not expected with these
totals, although the Withlacoochee River near Valdosta could be
near minor flood stage. Some instances of urban flooding and dirt
road issues are also possible in the heavier bands. The timing of
the heaviest rainfall is expected to be late Sunday night into
Monday. A flash flood watch could be considered in the future,
especially if forecast totals increase further.
