.Synopsis...
Extended heat wave continues through with widespread highs over
100 degrees and warm nights. Isolated afternoon thunderstorms
possible over the mountains into mid-week.

.Discussion...
Can't escape the heat this week...it'll be the main weather
headline as widespread triple digit heat continues through
Saturday. At 1 pm, observations showed many valley locations
ranging 98-104 degrees. A subtle delta breeze has kept the
Sacramento region from hitting the century mark at this hour, but
it won't act as a natural AC on full blast because it'll still be
very hot by the time we reach our maximum temperatures.

Hot weather in the short term forecast equates to triple digit
heat in the valley up to 110 degrees with overnight lows in the
70s. For higher terrain, highs will be in the 80s to upper 90s
with overnight lows in the 60s to low 70s.

Weak wave and lingering mid/upper level moisture combined with
daytime heating over the higher terrain will lead to more isolated
late-day thunderstorms over the NorCal mountains into mid-week.

Delta breeze expected to shut down again Wednesday and Thursday as
high pressure strengthens a bit resulting in the warmest
temperatures of the week for the Delta and Sacramento region. In
addition, north winds will set up in the valley, especially on the
western side on Wednesday and Thursday. Those winds, coupled with
dry conditions will enhance fire weather concerns.  JBB/DR

.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Friday THROUGH Monday)

The strong ridge that has been bringing us the record heat will
remain in place on Friday. Highs 100-107 expected in the valley
with 70's and 80's in the foothills and mountains. A trough will
dig south out of British Columbia and that will bring lower
heights to region along with a small cool down for the weekend.
Still looking at 100's in the valley for Saturday but most of the
valley minus the north valley should stay below 100 on Sunday. A
Delta breeze looks to develop for the weekend and that will bring
some relief from the heat in the Delta regions. We start to see
some instability build into the higher elevations over the weekend
and overall we should remain dry but maybe a shower or t-storm
possible Sunday afternoon in parts of Tuolumne and Alpine
Counties. Some uncertainty on whether the ridge builds back in for
early next week but temperatures look to be in the mid 90's for
the valley.
