.SYNOPSIS...High pressure aloft over the Great Basin today will
give way to a very cold Pacific storm system for Wednesday
through Thursday. An even colder storm will drop south out of
Canada and into the Great Basin this weekend.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
Water Vapor Satellite shows a low amplitude ridge extending across
the Great Basin from the Southern Pacific, but flattening across
Northern Utah yielding to the next storm, a closed low nearing the
Pacific Northwest. 400-200mb MDCARS wind observations place a
125-160kt northwesterly jet from southern British Columbia into
the Upper Midwest. GOES/SLC 12Z RAOB/HRRR indicate that
precipitable water values vary from 0.15"-0.20" mountains to
0.30"-0.40" valleys. Blended precipitable water product shows an
atmospheric river from near Hawaii into the Pacific Northwest.

Current forecast looks on track. As upper level flow becomes more
northwesterly with time, expecting an increase in mid and high
clouds across the north. 12Z KSLC RAOB shows an inversion in place
near 780mb. The affect of this building inversion should be
limited with increasing south flow, and of course by the upcoming
storm.

Anticipate winter/wind headlines coming out with the afternoon
package after looking over all of the 12Z guidance and
coordinating with our partners.

.PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...
The cold core upper trough moving south along the BritCol coast
will turn inland through the Pacific Northwest tonight, and then
continue southeast into the Great Basin on Wednesday. This trough
will gradually develop a closed circulation over southern Utah
Wednesday night, then slow it's eastward progression as it settles
into the four corners region Thursday.

The low amplitude upper ridge over Utah out ahead of the advancing
trough will maintain dry conditions and continue the warming trend
today. The mild temperatures will likely continue tonight as the
cold front associated with the trough advances toward the
northwest corner of Utah. Suspect that southerly winds will pick
up later tonight as the fairly strong near 700mb southwest flow
begins to mix down as the front closes in on the state. Lows
tonight will likely occur early in the evening, then increase with
the increased mixing.

Looking at good baroclinic structure with this trough as it moves
across northern/western Utah Wednesday. Strong low-level frontogenic
forcing will exist along the baroclinic zone as it tracks southeast
through northern and western Utah. Initially, precip along the
baroclinic zone across far northern Utah will be on the light
side, then intensify fairly quickly on the cold side of the
boundary as the mid-level trough and the associated very cold air
catch up with the low-level boundary. Anticipating a short period
of intense convective precip associated with the baroclinic zone,
then a fairly broad area of light/moderate intensity precip in
the trailing cold air instability.

The southeast quadrant of Utah could be looking at somewhat longer
precip event Wednesday night/Thursday as the now well developed
upper low slows down west of the four corners region. The broad
area of synoptic-scale lift associated with this feature along
with the fairly cold/moist air mass could bring about significant
snows for the southern/central mountains and possibly along the
I-15/I-70 corridors through central/southwest Utah. Have boosted
Pops/QPFs in those areas to account for the likelihood of this
occurring.

Precip will gradually end from the north and west as the upper low
pulls off to the east Thursday night and a drier more stable
anti-cyclonic northerly flow develops across the region. The next
energetic trough tracking south out of the Canadian Arctic will
according to the latest global models end up just north of the
state by late Friday. The already cold air in place ahead of this
feature will likely turn much colder heading into the holiday
weekend.

The verdict is still out as to which models will correctly
capture the shortwave dropping down the backside of the long wave
trough. The finer details are arguable but the general sense is
that arctic air will move into the CWA Saturday morning. Neither
GFS nor EC get too excited with the QPF which looks reasonable
considering the overland trajectory this system has. However, air
parcels crossing the GSL will destabilize and a real low density
snow could impact areas south to southeast of the lake.

As this cold air mass moves in, the surface pressure will rise
between 8-10mb across the CWA. The surface gradient will be north to
south along with 700mb winds of 25-35 kts should produce mentionable
winds across the western valleys Saturday afternoon. Have nudged
winds up some.

A dry northwest flow will likely set in Saturday night through
Monday night with strong 700mb warming from Sunday to Monday.
Although the valleys will not react rapidly to this warming the
mountains should see about a 10 degree rise between Sunday and
Monday.

Both the EC and GFS have a system undercutting the eastern Pacific
Ridge Tuesday. The EC is more energetic but hard to know how these
later systems will pan out. So have leaned toward climo by Tuesday
night across northern Utah which looks like the middle of a doughnut
compared to our most of our neighbors.

.AVIATION...
Southerly winds at the SLC terminal are expected to shift to the
northwest between 20-22Z. There is a 40 percent chance winds
remain southerly throughout the afternoon and the evening.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for the western two thirds of
Utah and southwest Wyoming.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Benign weather is expected.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday

The next cold storm system will arrive over northwest Utah early
Wednesday, then track southeast across the outlook area through
Thursday. The leading cold front will sweep southeast across the
area Wednesday through Wednesday night. A brief period of heavy
snow will exist along and behind the front, followed by areas of
snow confined mainly to the higher terrain and along the I-15 and
I-70 corridors in central and southwest Utah. This storm will
linger across southeast Utah Thursday, leading to the potential
for a prolonged and significant snowfall event across the central
and southern mountains and along the I-15 and I-70 corridors over
central and southwest Utah. Much colder temperatures will trail
this front and will remain over the outlook area through the end
of the week.

A second very cold storm system will move south out of northern
Canada and across the region this weekend. This storm will
generate areas of light snow and very cold temperatures across
the outlook area through the holiday weekend.
