Area forecast discussion, Jul 4, 9:21 PM MDT, 5 hours 42 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT 921 PM MDT Tue Jul 4 2017 .SYNOPSIS...The ridge of high pressure aloft will strengthen overhead through Friday, then will ever so gradually weaken and possibly move southeast towards the four corners by early next week. Some moisture is expected to seep in under this ridge. && .DISCUSSION...The large-scale pattern this evening is dominated by strong high pressure aloft encompassing much of the western CONUS. This high is currently centered over Utah and will shift slightly east tomorrow. A tongue of higher PWATs in the 0.6-0.7 inch range was observed across northern Utah today. Given some instability there owing in part to strong surface heating, a few thunderstorms developed over the Uintas and central Utah mountains as well as the far northwest corner of Utah this afternoon. These produced a few gusts earlier in the 40-50 mph range. However, these storms are already in the process of diminishing with the loss of daytime heating, and expect them to completely dissipate over the next hour or so. Little change in the weather will be in store for tomorrow except temperatures are expected to be a couple of degrees warmer than today's already-hot temperatures. In addition, there will be a bit of a drying trend from the west, so the northwest corner of Utah should be less active convectively but the Uintas and central mountains may see isolated thunderstorms yet again. Will continue to see little day-to-day changes for the next several days but there is a potential for increasing midlevel moisture towards the end of the week. Made minor updates to the forecast mainly to decrease PoPs and adjust sky cover for the rest of the night. && .AVIATION...Southeasterly winds are expected to become established at the SLC terminal by 04Z. && .SLC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
