morning, with upslope snow showers continuing across the mountains
of eastern West Virginia into Wednesday morning...

.Low pressure will continue to deepen along the Mid-Atlantic coast
today as it moves slowly north toward the New England coast.
Precipitation will end across the Piedmont and areas east of the
Blue Ridge during the morning, but upslope snow showers will
develop across the mountains from eastern West Virginia southward
into northwest North Carolina during the afternoon and evening and
continue into Wednesday morning, especially across eastern West
Virginia.

As the low pressure area deepens along the Mid-Atlantic coast,

.A deep low pressure area moving very slowly north along the New 
England coast will keep gusty northwest winds in place across the 
region today. With temperatures this morning in the teens...these
winds will continue to drive wind chills this morning to dangerously
low levels across the mountains. Regarding winds...a wind advisory
is in effect for much of the region until 7 pm EDT.

Winter Storm Warning.

Snow shower activity is diminishing across the region. Additional
snow accumulations are expected to be less than an inch. Several
inches of snow has fallen across this region during the last 24 to
36 hours, so untreated roads across the area are likely snow
covered and hazardous. Temperatures are not expected to rise above
freezing until Friday across this area.

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will continue to ridge in from the north through
tonight. A complex winter storm will impact much of the region
Monday night into Tuesday before exiting by Tuesday night, bringing
a mix of wintry precipitation. Cold high pressure follows this
system into the middle of the week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 814 PM EDT Sunday...

Tonight's forecast is on track as thin high clouds move across
as airmass stays in arctic type dryness.

Based on latest model guidance, have made adjustments to the
forecast for Monday afternoon into Monday evening. Still tricky
forecast especially near and east of the Blue Ridge with some
warm nose creating a tight gradient between above 0C and below
0C at 8h. This will impact how much snow accumulates. Looking at
the models best forcing starts between 00z-06z. Definitely an
event with bust potential as some areas who will be in an
advisory vs warning could see as little as an inch to as much as
5-6 inches. Still the areas from Greenbrier County to Amherst
County will likely see the most snowfall, with some higher
amounts scattered further south along the higher elevations like
Mountain Lake and Poor Mountain.

Per coordination with surrounding offices will be either
updating some areas to warnings/advisories. Will fine tuning
this forecast this evening.

Previous discussion from early afternoon...

Broad surface ridge is over the central/southern Appalachians
and the mid-Atlantic region this afternoon associated with a
broad anticyclone center over the northern Great Lakes region.
Broadly- cyclonic mid-level flow was present across the region.
Well to the south along the SC/GA coast was a poorly-organized
surface wave, while well to the west in the central Plains was
an organizing surface low roughly over western SD with a parent
positively-tilted 500 mb shortwave trough. The latter two
features are expected to become better organized tomorrow,
generating a significant late- season winter storm for most of
Virginia northward to New England.

For Tonight: Aforementioned surface ridge begins to shift eastward,
leading to clear skies and light winds. Later in the overnight into
the early morning, model consensus continues to point to the ridge
assuming a cold-air damming look with sub-540 dam 1000-500 mb
thicknesses evident across the Piedmont. Should start to see a few
high clouds progress into the forecast area toward Monday morning,
though the 12z NAM shows some lower-level RH/clouds banking up along
the southern Blue Ridge/NC High Country area. For many areas tonight
though, expect generally clear skies and light winds (trending
easterly by morning). Strong radiational cooling generates lows in
the lower to middle 20s, several degrees below typical mid-March
levels.

For Monday: CAD profile will likely predominate into the early
afternoon, along with very dry dewpoints. By early afternoon, we
will start to see the mid-level trough now across the northern
Plains starts to phase with the disturbance now over the Carolinas
as it lifts northward along the coast. Increasing
moisture/precipitation is expected to advect north-northwest
initially across the VA/NC Piedmont area by around mid-afternoon
associated with a south-southeast 850 mb jet of 45 kts. Since the
air mass is so dry, initial clouds/precipitation should go to curb
diurnal warming. In fact because of that setup, I've opted for mid-
day highs in the 30s to the mid 40s - with the rest of the afternoon
trending cooler, cooling via wet-bulb effects. A rather well-defined
850-700mb frontogenetic band is depicted in the NAM and the GFS,
beginning to develop along or just east of the Blue Ridge late in
the day. Steadier precipitation should begin as this happens from
the Piedmont to the foothills of the Blue Ridge, with the
precipitation just starting from the Blue Ridge west. Temperatures
will be warming aloft values just above 0C at 850 mb but primarily
along/east of the Blue Ridge.

Precipitation type will be heavily governed by 2-m AGL and low-level
temperatures as well as elevation, as is customarily the case.
Expect a cold rain from the VA/NC Piedmont to the Blue Ridge
foothills, tending to mix to either rain/snow/ice pellets as one
nears the Blue Ridge late tomorrow afternoon. Since the warm nose
aloft doesn't fully make it over the Blue Ridge, precipitation type
should start as a wet snow for counties west of the Blue Ridge.

The most significant accumulations will be more into Monday evening.
With precipitation starting Monday afternoon, however, a Winter
Storm Watch has now been issued for the Alleghany Highlands in
Virginia and into Greenbrier County West Virginia effective Monday
afternoon through Tuesday.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 410 PM EDT Sunday...

Upper lows close off on Tuesday morning rotating into New England by
late Wednesday. At the surface the main low will be deepening as it
passes north off the Virginia coast early Tuesday morning.

The strongest vorticity advection over southwest Virginia, southeast
West Virginia and northern North Carolina will be from 00-06z
Tuesday which also lines up with good isentropic lift and warm air
advection. Ensemble GFS showed the best inflow off the Atlantic
developing overnight Monday and pointing into Maryland, Deleware and
northern Virginia which implies the location of the heaviest
precipitation will be in that area late Monday night.

For precipitation type, models continued to indicate a transition
zone along the Blue Ridge between the rain to the southeast and snow
in colder air to the northwest. As the low moves north along the
coast, winds turn to the northwest and colder air begins to advect
into the area, all the precipitation will turn to snow. Low
level moisture stays in the western upslope areas through
Wednesday morning so will have snow showers continuing in
southeast West Virginia into Wednesday. Amount of precipitation
will influence the amount of snow, sleet and/or freezing rain.
At this time expecting around one half inch of liquid equivalent
east of a line from Hot Springs to Danville Monday night with
lighter amounts as you go father west. SREF guidance showing a
warmer temperature profile than the GEFS. Some guidance
suggests that only the higher elevations will be cold enough for
snow or a mix until colder air comes in on the west side of the
low Tuesday.

Cold air advection, pressure rises and a 45 knot low level jet will
result in strong gusty winds from late in the day Tuesday through
Wednesday. The 850MB temperatures coming in by Wednesday
morning are close to historic low values for this time of March.
Will have minimum temperatures below guidance for Tuesday
night.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 410 PM EDT Sunday...

Deep troughing remains over the eastern United States through
Thursday. Still a but of spread in the guidance from Thursday
through Sunday. WPC leaning toward 00Z ECMWF through Friday and
ensembles through the weekend.

Pressure gradient slackens on Thursday leading to diminishing wind.
By Friday morning the surface high will be over the Mid Atlantic
states. The next cold front will approach the region on Saturday.
The best chance of precipitation will be over the mountains Saturday
and limited to the western upslope areas on Sunday. Temperatures
will remain below normal through the weekend.

.AVIATION /01Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 730 PM EDT Sunday...

VFR conditions will prevail through 12z Monday, some mid and
high clouds are possible especially around the NC mountain
ridges. Winds light and variable continue overnight into Monday
morning.

As we advance into Monday, expect ceilings to begin to thicken
and lower particularly with southern extent, with the lowest
being at DAN. However, ceilings should primarily be VFR through
18z. Greater operational impact in terms of precipitation on
the increase from S -> N and lowering sub-VFR ceilings mainly
after 20z Monday. MVFR conditions will become more widespread
after 00z Tuesday. Winds will generally be east to northeast
6-9 kts.

High confidence on ceilings/visibilities/winds through 12z
Monday.
Medium confidence on ceilings/visibilities after 12z Monday;
High confidence on winds during the period.

Extended Aviation Discussion...

A winter storm is expected to develop and hamper parts of the
the Mid-Atlantic Region into New England late Monday afternoon
into Tuesday. Significant operational impact expected at most of
the terminals owing to IFR to LIFR ceilings, MVFR to IFR
visibility and a mix of precipitation types. Rain, wet snow
and/or sleet should predominate.

While precipitation generally winds down Tuesday afternoon
across most of the TAFs with flight categories improving to
VFR, a long-duration period of upslope snowfall then begins for
LWB/BLF with a continuation of associated IFR/MVFR conditions
into Wednesday. Northwest winds also project to get gusty across
most of the terminals Wednesday.

Generally VFR all terminals by Wednesday evening through Friday
with diminishing winds as high pressure builds in.
