PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Wind Chill Advisory means that cold air and the wind will
combine to create low wind chills. Frost bite and hypothermia can
occur if precautions are not taken. Make sure you wear a hat and
gloves.

.SYNOPSIS...
A deep upper trough anchored across south central and southeast
Canada will keep a steady stream of Arctic air moving southeast
through the central and eastern U.S. through the next week,
possibly longer. Another surge of Arctic air will arrive New
Year's Eve, with perhaps an even more significant one by the end
of next week. Little significant precipitation is expected
through this time frame as moisture is confined well to our
south. Expect much below normal temperatures and below normal
precipitation to continue through the next 7-10 day period.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 445 AM EST Saturday...

Little to no significant change expected in the upper-level
pattern over the next week or so. A deep upper low will remain
anchored near the Great Lakes, shifting very slowly east through
midweek as upper-level impulses continue to rotate around the
trough keeping it semi-anchored in place. The corresponding
ridge toward the west coast will continue to allow Arctic air
to be tapped through the period. The aforementioned disturbances
will each be associated with another surge of Arctic air
plunging 850mb temperatures into the -20C range or colder, with
warmups only into the -8C range at best in between cold
outbreaks.

The next surge of Arctic air will actually arrive tonight and
early Sunday. West winds this morning will become more northwest
with time as the disturbance passes through the area. Enough
synoptic lift was present mainly along and north of I-64 for
scattered light snow this morning. Accumulations in our CWA
amount to little more than a dusting, with more notable one
inch+ amounts noted just to our north in areas like
Harrisonburg, VA. This disturbance will largely pass east of the
area by late morning. From that point through the rest of this
period, any snow will be confined to upslope across the western
mountains/Alleghanys. Accumulations again will be less than one
inch as low-level moisture is extremely limited in the
continued very dry Arctic air mass with dewpoints below zero.

So, again this period, wind and cold temperatures will be the
main weather story. Temperatures today will remain below normal,
but be on the order of what we saw Saturday. Many areas will
creep into the mid and upper 30s, especially east of the Blue
Ridge. Western areas will only reach the upper 20s to lower 30s,
with even colder temperatures at elevations above 3000 ft. Cold
advection will begin in earnest overnight/early Sunday as the
next wave of Arctic air spreads into the region from the
northwest. By morning, low temperatures will range from single
digits, perhaps even near 0F in a few western mountain locations
like McRoss and Burkes Garden, to around 20 in the southeast
part of the CWA. Little recovery in temperatures is expected
Sunday with many areas remaining well below freezing once again.

Wind chill readings during the overnight and morning hours will
be the greatest concern during this period and beyond. For
Sunday morning, western Greenbrier is solidly within the -5F to -15F
Wind Chill Advisory criteria area and so will be issuing a Wind
Chill Advisory for that. Contemplated a Wind Chill Watch for
Monday and Tuesday night as conditions are met in a larger
portion of the CWA both nights and warning criteria several
spots west of the Blue Ridge. However, in coordination with
neighboring offices, will leave that for the day shift to
coordinate and just mention in the HWO for now.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
As of 230 AM EST Saturday...

An upper level jet streak and mid level disturbance caught in zonal
flow may produce some light snow across southeastern West Virginia
Sunday. The GFS is the only model showing snow and is likely
overdone in this very dry airmass. However, since the Great Lakes
are not totally ice covered, the chances for accumulating snow is
greater than zero while confidence does not exceed 20 percent. This
disturbance will pass to the east by Sunday evening.

The arctic airmass that has been over the US for the past several
days will remain with reinforcing shots of cold air into at least
Tuesday. Mountain valley temperatures may warm into the low to mid
20s, while the higher ridges are not likely to break above the mid
teens. Overnight lows across the mountains will drop into the single
digits and with any wind, wind chill values will fall below zero
each morning. Temperatures east of the Blue Ridge will be relatively
warmer with afternoon highs ranging from the mid 20s to low 30s.
Overnight lows will drop into the teens and early morning wind
chills into the single digits. Wind chill advisories are likely for
the mountains and is possible for areas east of the Blue Ridge each
morning starting Sunday.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 230 PM EST Friday...

The persistent amplified western ridge and eastern trough pattern
will maintain the cold spell for most of the medium range period.
The combination of cold air and brisk winds will produce low wind
values at some locations.

Strong high pressure builds east across the Ohio Valley Tuesday and
Tuesday night. A shortwave will rotate east across the Great Lakes
region. A surface cold front will push southeast across the Midwest
Tuesday night. The Bulk of the energy and moisture with this will
stay north of our forecast area.

On Wednesday, the high stays situated nearby from the mid MS Valley
to the central Appalachians while the southern stream energy stays
well suppressed to the south. The Northern stream cold front should
provide a slight chance of snow showers or snow flurries Wednesday
night-Thursday in the mountains of West Virginia and far Southwest
Virginia. The GFS is more robust with shortwave travel around trough
axis compared to ECMWF. Another cold front swings through Friday
night into Saturday.

All in all, staying well below normal for temperatures. We may
return closer to normal toward next weekend.

.AVIATION /10Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 1120 PM EST Friday...

Extensive shield of VFR mid/high clouds will continue to
increase across the region overnight with lowering cigs to
perhaps MVFR at KLWB/KBLF into early Saturday. A few snow
showers may slide across KBLF/KLWB late tonight-Sat morning
ahead of the next cold front but so scattered that only
included a brief mention across the southeast West Virginia
sites at this point. If snow does occur vsbys could briefly drop
to MVFR.

Lower MVFR to ocnl VFR cigs likely to linger over the
mountains through much of Saturday behind the passing wave from
tonight and ahead of the next Arctic front later Saturday.
Should see overall VFR elsewhere from KROA eastward with mainly
clear skies developing out east. Increasing west to northwest
winds will occur during Saturday afternoon with gusts to 25-30
kts possible by late in the day as much colder air arrives.

Extended Discussion...

VFR conditions will continue as any moisture needed for
significant precipitation and cloud cover will remain well to
the south along and near the Gulf Coast and far southeast U.S.
into next week The exception throughout the entire period will
be brief periods of mostly MVFR ceilings and possibly MVFR
visibilities from upslope clouds and snow showers behind a
series of Arctic fronts/air masses that will invade the region
every 2-3 days through the end of next week. Some periods of
gusty winds will also accompany the stronger cold fronts. The
most likely periods for these will be Sunday and Thursday. VFR
conditions are expected throughout the period east of the Blue
Ridge with any ceilings AOA 030.

...Light Snow or Flurries Possible through the Early Morning
Hours...

An upper-level disturbance was tracking southeastward from the
Ohio Valley in advance of another surge of Arctic air. A period of
light snow or flurries will be possible generally along and north
of a line from Richlands, to Blacksburg, to Lynchburg and
Appomattox through the early morning hours. With temperatures well
below freezing throughout the entire area this morning, a few
slick spots could develop on roads and bridges. However,
accumulations, if any, are expected to be 1/2 inch or less. The
most likely area for any accumulation would be along and north of
a line from Bluefield, to Lexington, to Buckingham.
