.SYNOPSIS...
A large low pressure over Kentucky this morning will move
northeast into New York by Saturday morning. Another smaller low
moving over the Ohio Valley on Saturday will cross the central
Appalachians on Saturday night. High pressure will cover most
of the Mid Atlantic region Monday and Tuesday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 1210 PM EDT Friday...

Fairly quiet on radar at the moment. Surface/upper analysis at
noon shows surface low over WV, with 5h low near Nashville
TN/Bowling Green, KY. As we head into the afternoon CAMs
(Convective Allowing Models) showing redevelopment of showers
and storms over portions of the piedmont northwest to the
Alleghanys, with more showery wx also over the mountains of SW
Va/NW NC. With clearing taking place, should heat up enough to
steepen lapse rates, with mid-level lapse rates and upper cool
pool supporting potential for hailers in the stronger cells.
Have added this in along and north of a line from BKW-near
Halifax this afternoon from 19z-23z. Again storms will be more
widely scattered in nature.

Otherwise, no major changes to the forecast were made with
nudging up of near term temps to account for a little more
warning where more sun is occurring.

Previous mid morning discussion...

Flood watch cancelled as threat of widespread heavy rain is
over. Everything hydro will be covered with advisories or
warnings, but most of the creeks and streams are near crest and
beginning to fall, though some flooding downstream is possible.

Narrow band of showers moving along front from the Alleghanys to
southside VA, heading north to northeast. High-res models have
this moving out by early afternoon, but with cool pool of upper
low will and steep lapse rates, will see more showers form in
the west and north this afternoon.

Previous discussion from early morning...

Highly amplified pattern today with a closed low crossing through
the Tennessee Valley. Water vapor loops showed the low beginning to
move northeast out of Alabama. Another upper low coming out of
southern Canada will combine with the southeast low into a deeper
closed off system over the Great Lakes early Saturday morning.

Several bands of moderate to heavy showers oriented from north to
south from West Virginia and Virginia into South Carolina. 3KM
nested NAM showed enhanced low level convergence along the band of
showers and thunderstorms extending from Roanoke to central North
Carolina. Based on the timing of the NAM and other Hi-RES models,
the back edge of this precipitation will move east of Lynchburg and
Danville by 9Am. Models have strip of dry air just behind the axis
of precipitation. Heaviest rainfall this morning will be before 8AM,
then best inflow of high precipitable water air and stronger
precipitation potential placement pushes into central and eastern
Virginia and North Carolina.

Clouds and more showers move back into the mountains from the west
this evening. Colder 500 MB temperatures reach southwest
Virginia, northwest North Carolina, and southeast West Virginia
tonight. The 850MB cold front reaches the coast by this
evening.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 330 AM EDT Friday...

Long wave trof axis moves into Maryland and eastern Virginia as
another short waves rounds the base of the upper low on Saturday
night. Some surface reflection of this low will cross the
southern Appalachians Saturday night. This will aide lift in the
mountains and extend the probability of precipitation across
southern Virginia and northern North Carolina.

Deeper moisture moves east of the region as the surface low moves
toward Pennsylvania and New York. With a west to northwest wind,
downsloping will clear out clouds east of the Blue Ridge Sunday.

The next surge of colder air comes into the region on Saturday and
Saturday night. 850MB temperatures drop to zero along and west of
the Blue Ridge Sunday morning.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 330 PM EDT Thursday...

Deep closed upper low pressure will continue to pinwheel over New
England through the long term period, placing the Blacksburg
forecast area under a persistent cool northwesterly flow at both the
surface and aloft.

Some spotty frost/near freezing temperatures are again a possibility
in some of the deeper mountain valleys late Sunday night until
around daybreak on Monday - provided that sufficient cloud breaks
and boundary layer decoupling occurs.  A similar occurrence may
occur around daybreak on Tuesday, mainly confined to portions of the
New River Valley north into the Greenbrier Valley.

Although much of the period will be dry, passage of an occasional
weak short wave trof scooting southeast out of the upper Great Lakes
into/through the mid Appalachian and mid-Atlantic region Tuesday
night into Wednesday, and again on Thursday will likely bring
periods of increased clouds along with the threat for some light
showers.

.AVIATION /17Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 115 PM EDT Friday...

Look for mainly VFR conditions this afternoon into the evening.
Will have to watch for re-development of showers/few tsra under
upper cool pool and along frontal zone. Some of the enhanced
showers and storms could bring hail due to the colder air aloft.
Main emphasis for thunder chances will be in the LWB area, with
VCTS. Otherwise most of the afternoon looks dry, then should see
uptick in shower coverage over the mountains after 00z/Sat.
During the night, cigs will drop to MVFR with some IFR west, and
VFR at DAN. Vsbys overall should be VFR BCB/ROA and east, with
MVFR showers LWB/BLF. Showers could hang around the mountains
into Saturday morning but with scattered nature after this
evening, opted to leave out Sat morning.

Extended Aviation Discussion...

Scattered showers will continue across the mountains Saturday
night as another short wave crosses the central Appalachians.
Colder air comes in behind this wave. Temperatures will be cold
enough for a few snow flurries in elevations above 3000 feet
Saturday night into Sunday morning. VFR conditions will return
Sunday into Monday. Moisture slowly increases Tuesday night into
Wednesday in the mountains.

As of 915 AM EDT Friday...

Flood watch cancelled.

Looking at ongoing flooding in portions of the Roanoke and
southern Shenandoah, with minor river flooding expected along
the Dan River at South Boston around midnight tonight.

Other main stem rivers, such as the Upper New, Yadkin, Roanoke
and James will have to be monitored closely. While these rivers
will experience rises, the projected crests are below Action
stage levels.
