.SHORT TERM...Today through Monday night
Issued at 230 AM MST Sat Dec 2 2017

Not too many concerns for today with transitory high pressure in
control. Some weak lift will keep some light showers over the far
northwest, but any amounts will be very small. Meanwhile, expect
another dry and mild day East of the Divide. With another Pacific
cold front and trough approaching from the west some snow will
break out across the west tonight. The latest model runs have slowed
significantly, so we lowered POPS during the evening hours with the
steadiest precipitation likely holding off until after midnight and
more likely after around 2 am. We also removed all precipitation
across the Bighorn Mountains as there is no way the precipiation
will make it that far east at night or even during most of Sunday.

The remainder of the discussion will be split into West and East of
the Divide.

West of the Divide...Snow will begin to move into the west Saturday
night but the steadiest as stated before should hold off until after
9Z. Periods of snow will continue through Sunday across the west
before tapering off later Sunday night. We do have some concerns
however that accumulations may be a bit too high. The main reason
are the models are showing the system splitting. In addition, this
is not the classic warm advection situation that brings the heaviest
snow. With the uncertainty in what highlights needed, we will punt
the final decision to the day shift. Right now, I would lean more
toward advisories than warnings since accumulations since the only
areas for warnings would be above pass level and in many these
areas, more snow usually means dollar signs rather than travel
headaches. Snow will gradually taper off Sunday night. As for
Monday, it looks colder but nothing unusual for early December. Some
snow showers will also linger in the mountains but additional
accumulations are expected to be minor. Lows on Monday night are a
little uncertain since a lot has to do with how much clearing there
is. If it significantly clears, it could get quite chilly with the
fresh snow pack and long December nights.

East of the Divide...Most of Sunday will remain dry and mild. A few
showers may jump the divide but these would hold off until closer to
sunset. All in all, it will be another mild temperatures with
temperatures remaining well above normal. It will be quite windy in
the usual suspects though ahead of the advancing cold front, mainly
from Rock Springs through Casper with the southwest flow. 700
millibar winds do not look sufficient for high wind highlights
however.

Snow will spread East of the Divide Sunday night, especially after
midnight. However, we still have some differences in the models with
the NAM, GFS and European all having different ideas on where the
heaviest snow will fall. Again, with any highlights I would lean
more toward advisories for most areas rather than warnings, but
these would not go into effect until Sunday night. One area becoming
more of a concern however is the northern Big Horn Basin and
northern Johnson County. We do not expect a tremendous amount of
snow at this time. However, with strong northwesterly flow and cold
advection setting up behind the cold frontal passage later Sunday
evening, conditions could get quite nasty. GFS MOS is showing
sustained winds of 43 knots with the NAM having close to 30 knots.
This could lead to some near blizzard conditions at times later
Sunday night in these areas even if the snowfall is not that heavy.
Across central Wyoming, there is a period of upslope late Sunday
night and Monday morning but the questions is how long it will last.
The European really hits Natrona County hard but the other models
are not as impressed. So as expected, this is a fluid situation and
a fair amount of uncertainty.

Steadier snow in these locations will end Monday morning. Unstable
northwesterly flow could keep some showers going through the day
though. All in all, Monday will be a much cooler day and with a
brisk it wind it will feel like we stepped from October into winter.
And, like West of the Divide, low temperatures Monday night will be
tricky depending on the amount of clearing and depth of any
snowfall.

.LONG TERM...Tuesday through Saturday

Long range models are fairly close with the big picture for
Tuesday through Saturday. High amplitude ridge over Western North
America and a deep trough over the Midwest/Great Lakes and
eventually much of the eastern U.S. It is in the details where
the model differences show up. The GFS and ECMWF models agree that
Tuesday and Wednesday will see some snow showers in the Northern
Bighorn mountains and isolated snow showers in northern Johnson
county. The rest of the region will be dry Tue and Wed. Close
model agreement Thursday through Saturday with dry weather
forecasted as the ridge moves east enough to shunt any moisture to
our east. Temperature forecasts will be the tricky part
especially in the wake of any new snow cover from the Sunday
night/Monday storm. Basin inversions are expected to develop and
this will limit the warming potential. The mixed areas will see
the milder high temps from Thursday onward. Have made some cooling
adjustments to highs and lows in most basins based on climatology
and local knowledge. The other temperature issue is for Wednesday
as the GFS is colder than the ECMWF model in the east zones. The
GFS has a quick shot of cold air invading the east zones while the
ECMWF model is keeping it to our east. Will have to watch this in
time as any shortwave diving south into the trough could clip our
eastern zones. For now trimmed a few degrees off the highs in the
eastern zones. Will see how things look tonight.

.AVIATION...18Z Issuance

West of the Continental Divide...KJAC, KPNA, KBPI, and KRKS

Another embedded upper level disturbance will return frequent
mountain obscuration in -SN and BR with possible MVFR conditions
in/vcnty of KJAC-KAFO 10z-14z Sunday before more
predominate/widespread snowfall arrives and continues through (and
beyond) the end of the forecast period. Expect IFR/occasional LIFR
conditions after 14z at KJAC and surrounding areas. KBPI and KPNA
will be marginally affected after 15z Sunday with VCSH. Otherwise,
increasing winds aloft with the approach of the upper level
disturbance will allow widespread areas of LLWS to develop beginning
this evening and continue through the end of the forecast period.

East of the Continental Divide...KCPR, KCOD, KRIW, KLND, and KWRL

VFR conditions to prevail through the end of the forecast period. A
more powerful Pacific storm system will move into/through the NW
CONUS 06z-12z Sunday with precipitation beginning west of the Divide
by sunrise. Expect increasing south to southwest winds across the
wind corridor, vicinity 50SM NE KRKS-KCPR ahead of this system, with
increasing mountain top winds and areas of LLWS developing across
much of the area later this evening through the end of the forecast
period. Higher mountains along the Continental Divide will become
increasingly obscured 06z-18z Sunday.

A weak area of high pressure will bring dry weather to most areas
today. The exception would be the far northwest where a few snow
showers are possible but these would be very light. Temperatures
will remain above average with a gusty wind developing from the Red
Desert through Natrona County. Relative humidity will remain above
critical levels. Mixing and smoke dispersal will range from poor in
the basins to good in the windier areas. Snow will spread into the
west tonight and East of the Divide on Sunday evening.
