Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Riverton WY 1148 AM MDT Thu Nov 2 2017 .SHORT TERM...Today through Thursday Issued at 637 AM MDT Thu Nov 2 2017 The cold front/band of best omega slipped a little farther south earlier this evening than the models had indicated. This allowed accumulating snowfall to make it as far south as Riverton/Lander before it begins to retreat to the north a little later this morning. We issued advisories to cover this for the Wind River Basin/lander Foothills as well as Natrona County/Casper. Downgraded the warning in the Cody Foothills to an advisory with most of the remaining action in Central Wyoming now. Also, split the northern portion of the advisory for the Big Horn Basin and Johnson County for the same reason, keeping the southern halves of these advisories in tact. Added another advisory for the Jackson Valley as 3 inches of snow have already fallen there with around an additional 3 to 5 inches expected there by 3 pm this afternoon. The snow will end east of the divide later this afternoon as the front/omega/weak isentropic lift carries the expansive swath of steady light snow northeast of our area with it. Than without much of a break, snow, heavy at times will get underway in the Western Mountains as a strong Pacific fetch/upslope flow develops. Snowfall will be particularly enhanced as a jet couplet becomes established Friday and Friday night and left front quad dynamics occur Saturday night. The mixture of rain and snow should become all snow by Saturday in the Western Valleys by Saturday day with cooling aloft increasing instability there. Snow heavy at times will likely get underway in tech western valleys as well by Saturday through Saturday night but for now have introduced it for the Western Mountains in the form of a winter storm watch. many western mountain zones could see 2 feet of snow by sunday morning along with 3 feet in the Tetons. .LONG TERM...Friday through Thursday Issued at 637 AM MDT Thu Nov 2 2017 Active period continues throughout the extended period. Friday/Saturday system is all but exiting the area to start this period but the next one is fast on its heels. Odds of more snow will be on the increase as Sunday wears on. More significant snow could develop in the western mountains Sunday night through Monday. Cold front east of the divide will be lingering across the north mainly into Monday where it will remain quite cool but even the south won't be that nice with modestly cool mid level temperatures remaining and a chance of snow moving in Monday with the next system. Trough swings across the area later Monday into Monday night with a chance of snow swinging across the rest of the area east of the divide. Brief shortwave ridging Tuesday after a chilly start. Not much of a break as the next system moves quickly back towards the area Wednesday with the trough swinging across next Thursday. Another bout of snow across the west with this system. May see another quick shot of snow east of the divide with trough passage, especially south and nrn border but plenty of time to see how this busy pattern evolves. Overall, unsettled with periods of snow in the west, especially mountains and generally cool east of the divide. && .AVIATION...For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Friday afternoon Issued at 1127 AM MDT Thu Nov 2 2017 Snow continues from KJAC-KDUB northward, with lingering showers from KCOD-KWRL. These showers will lift toward the northeast this afternoon. MVFR to IFR conditions will be common at these locations due to low visibilities and ceilings. The northern and western mountains will be obscured with MVFR to IFR conditions through the period, along with snow in the western mountains. Snow is expected to change over to rain by 21Z at KJAC with MVFR conditions remaining and continue through the rest of the TAF period. Although snow has ended KLND- KRIW- KCPR, low clouds persist over these areas. These clouds are expected to thin and lift to MVFR conditions through 00Z Friday. VFR conditions will prevail in the south and southwest through 06Z Friday, with -SHSN and MVFR ceilings expected at KPNA after 08Z. Gusty wind will occur late this afternoon in the usual Wind Corridor of southern and south central WY. The wind will decrease some after 02Z Fri.
