Area Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...Monday through Wednesday night (Issued at 1120 AM
MST)

For yet another day...we will split the discussion into West and
East of the Divide.

West of the Divide...

As of now we are currently in a relative lull in the snow in most
areas. However, the radar is filling in to the west with satellite
imagery showing yet another system moving in. This reminds me of the
line from the classic kids song conjunction junction, expect this
version is, "Hooking up fronts and shortwaves and moisture," Anyway,
snow will move into the area for the most part. I say for the most
part since we feel there is the chance for some rain to mix in at
times across the lower elevations with the initial shot of warm
advection. The mountains should stay all snow though. The models at
this time are zeroing on two periods for the heaviest snow. The
first this morning with the initial warm advection, and then from
around 9 pm to 3 am with the best dynamics and the passage of the
front and trough axis. For the most part, amounts looked reasonable
so we only made minor tweaks. The models do show a bit of a break
though from late tonight into Tuesday morning before the next system
moves in. As for extending the warnings, plenty of time to decide
that as the models have been a bit inconsistent for Tuesday during
the day.

The I-80 corridor could be interesting as well for Tuesday. Both the
NAM and GFS show some precipitation developing there, although there
are some timing differences. With borderline temperatures, some
could fall as rain at times though. For now, we increased POPS a bit
but still a tough call here. Another wave, although a weaker one
will move in Tuesday night across the west and bring another round
of snow.

For Wednesday into Wednesday night there should be another lull, not
a break but a lull, possibly enough to drop the highlights for a
while or so. Another system, this one likely warmer, will move in
for Thursday so see the long term for more details.

East of the Divide...

The concern once again for today is wind. Mid level winds should
weaken across the north so we will either kill the high wind warning
for the Cody Foothills or let it expire this morning. However, the
main concern will shift to the southwestern wind corridor from Rock
Springs though Casper. Both the NAM and GFS show 700 millibar winds
rising to over 50 knots with the NAM increasing them to 70 knots
prior to a trough and frontal passage. We will continue the high
wind warnings. The other question is temperatures in the deeper
basins. The inversions should continue to erode and this should be
the breeziest day of the week even there. As a result, we raised
high temperatures a few degrees in the lower elevations. As for the
chance of precipitation, the GFS does show some showers across
central Wyoming with the front. The NAM keeps things dry for the
most part with the exception of the mountains. For now, we went
with slight POPS in most areas.

There will be less wind on Tuesday. Temperatures should also be
cooler behind the front. The question is about precipitation though.
Both the NAM and GFS lift a band of it northeastward across the area
late Tuesday into Tuesday night. There are some differences in
placement with the GFS focusing the most across areas further south
than the NAM. For now, we split the middle but the best chance at
this time look to be in the east along the I-25 corridor. It is a
fairly quick hitter though so not a lot of precipitation is expected
however. At this point, Wednesday looks to be mainly dry with some
flat ridging across the area.

.LONG TERM...THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY

Synopsis...Mild and moist westerly flow will bring moderate
to heavy precipitation across the west Thursday into Friday morning
with snow levels between 7000-8000 feet; the avalanche danger will
increase significantly.  Very mild and breezy to windy conditions
are expected across central and eastern Wyoming Thursday and Friday.
A cold front will push south across the area on Saturday spreading
chances of snow across central Wyoming along with cooler
temperatures.  A ridge of high pressure will bring dry weather with
near or slightly above normal temperatures Sunday and Monday.

Discussion...Synoptic pattern on Thursday morning will consist of
flat ridge centered along 110W, flanked by troughs across the
eastern Pacific and eastern U.S.  Impressive moisture transport in
WSW flow is shown by all global models with both GFS and Canadian
averaging close to 0.50" QPF per 6 hour period from 12z Thursday
through 12z Friday across northwest Wyoming.   The overall trend has
been upward for QPF amounts.  Snow levels are expected to rise to
near 8000 feet across the west Thursday afternoon with H7
temperatures currently projected in the 0C to -2c range through
Thursday night.  Rain or heavy wet snow on the existing snowpack
across the west will likely greatly increase the avalanche danger on
steeper slopes.  A shortwave translating the northern Rockies on
Friday should drop snow levels to the valley floors through the day
with precipitation decreasing in coverage and intensity.

East of the Continental Divide, strong southwest flow will likely
result in some high winds across the wind corridor across southern
Fremont and Natrona County.  Highs will be in the 40s to mid 50s
across the lower elevations Thursday and Friday.

The bulk of the eastern Pacific trough will move inland and become
increasingly split Friday and Saturday, the northern stream
outrunning the southern stream across the northern Rockies Friday
night, while a closed low is expected to pinch off over the desert
SW by Sunday.   Split flow will not be favorable for significant
precipitation coverage in our area.  Upper ridge is expected to fold
over SW low on Monday with SW low drifting SW into northwest Mexico.
Both GFS and ECMWF show upper ridge and dry weather prevailing over
the area out to 10 days (Feb. 15th).

AVIATION.../18Z ISSUANCE/

West of the Divide...KBPI/KJAC/KPNA/KRKS Terminals

Snow for the western mountains and the far west valleys from Afton
to Jackson through tonight. Periods of snow for Kemmerer, Big
Piney, and Pinedale through Tuesday morning. MVFR to IFR ceilings
and visibilities will occur. KRKS airport will stay VFR through
tonight with rain and snow showers in the vicinity, mainly this
afternoon and tonight. Strong wind speeds at ridgetop levels will
continue and this will produce areas of low level wind shear
through tonight. Please check the latest terminal forecasts for
details.

East of the Divide...KCOD/KCPR/KLND/KRIW/KWRL Terminals

Snow will remain widespread across the Absaroka and Wind River
mountains through Tuesday morning. IFR to MVFR ceilings and
visibilities will be widespread over the mountains obscuring
higher terrain above 8000 feet east of the Continental Divide.
Strong wind speeds at ridgetop levels will produce areas of low
level wind shear through tonight. VFR conditions will occur at the
terminal sites through Tuesday.

FIRE WEATHER...

Periods of snow will continue across western Wyoming through
Tuesday. Snow should increase today and continue into early Tuesday
with the heaviest snow expected this morning and around midnight
