The National Weather Service in Riverton has cancelled the High
Wind Warning. 

The threat for widespread high winds has ended across southern
Wyoming and parts of central Wyoming. A gusty west wind of 25 to 
35 mph will occur in some places this evening with gusts from 40 
to 50 mph at times. Wind speeds will gradually decrease toward 
midnight. Therefore, the high wind warning has been cancelled for 
these areas.

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Thursday night) Issued at 259 AM MDT

Today will feature dry and milder weather along with some breezes
along the Southern Wind Corridor. Then we can look forward to a
tightening backing gradient tonight which will result in
increasing wind which will continue through Wednesday. We feel
more certain about the anticipated high wind along the Southern
Wind Corridor as well as in the Wind River Basin, Owl Creek Mtns,
and east Slope of the Wind River Mtns for Wednesday than for the
Cody Foothills and adjacent Absaroka Mtns for tonight, but it
would go against popular convention to have a watch out to address
an earlier event and a warning to address a later event, so will
keep the high wind hilites as all watches for now. As for the Cody
Foothills/Absarokas, tonights wind event looks marginal given the
uniform wind speed moving into and away from the east slope of
the Absarokas/Cody Foothills, lack of a critical layer, brief but
relatively weak mtn top inversion, and relatively unimpressive
700mb temp gradient between YNP and Clark. In addition, a slow
moving surface front will sag south across far Northern Wyoming
Wednesday, decreasing the sfc gradient somewhat along with snow
developing. As for the Southern Wind Corridor as well as portions
of Central Wyoming, a good high wind signature exists, featuring
6 height lines 30 decimeters apart at 700mb, an 11mb sfc pressure
gradient between GCC and RKS, and a right front quad of the jet
max ovhd pulling down the 60 knot winds at 700mb to the sfc. Mos
guidance is indicating 30 plus knot winds at CPR, RIW, and RKS for
Wednesday. The MAV guidance for RKS gives them 38 knots for
sustained winds at 21z Wednesday.

As for the snowfall asct with the front in Northern WY, the front
will sag slowly south Wednesday to the Owl Creek Mtns Wednesday
night. Snowfall will spread south with the front. Then this swath
of snowfall will intensify as isentropic lift flows northeast
across the slowly retreating front back toward the nne. With the
intensifying snowfall, low level upslope, and long duration of
snowfall (which will start out as rain in the lower elevations),
we have decided to issue a winter storm watch for the Absaroka/Big
Horn Mtns for Wednesday through Thursday and for Wednesday night
through Thursday across the Cody Foothills and northern Johnson
County. We are looking at the potential for upwards of 15 to 20
inches of snowfall by the end of Thursday for portions of the
Northern Mtns and up to 9 inches over portions of the Cody
Foothills and up to 7 inches over portions of the lower
elevations of Northern Johnson County near the foothills of the
east slope of the Big Horn Mtns.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Tuesday) Issued at 259 AM MDT Tue
Oct 31 2017

Moist backing flow to start the period with general upglide
signature across the northwest Friday through Saturday where
significant precipitation is expected. Temps are rather warm so
the lower elevations will be mostly rain but the higher elevations
could see significant snow during this period, especially above
8000 to 9000 feet. Late in the weekend, a decent trough should
swing across the area with a strong front moving into the north
early Sunday and across the rest of the area from the afternoon
into the evening hours. Strong west to southwest wind will blow
ahead of this system much of Friday and Saturday across the wind
corridor and in most of the mountain and east slope foothill hill
areas ahead of the front Saturday night. A quick swath of rain
changing to snow will likely accompany the front east of the
divide. West winds could be quite strong (to high) across the I80
corridor with fropa (and pcpn period). Leaning more towards the
GFS in this pattern as it fits the bigger picture of the mean
trough over the intermountain west developing this weekend before
weakening early next week. Quite chilly behind our system Monday
with some lingering light snow in the mountains and maybe some
flurries lingering in the upslope areas east of the divide.
Shortwave ridging is expected on Tuesday for some recovery after a
cold start.

accumulation's across Northern Wyoming Wednesday through Thursday
along and north of a cold frontal boundary.

Wednesday through Thursday...Becoming very windy along the southern
wind corridor from Rock Springs to Casper as well as other
portions of Central Wyoming. Heavy snow possible in the northern
mountains Wednesday through Thursday and in the Cody Foothills and
Northern Johnson County Wednesday night and Thursday.

Friday through Saturday...Significant mountain snowfall possible
in the northwest mountains. Strong winds from Rock Springs to
Casper much of this period. Strong winds in the mountains and east
slope of most mountain ranges on Saturday.
