.SYNOPSIS...
Increasing clouds and mild conditions are expected today, then a
moderate winter storm will bring gusty winds, rain and snow this
weekend. Snow accumulation is looking likely even in valley
locations by late Saturday night into Sunday morning. High pressure
will then build mid to late week with warmer and drier conditions
expected.

.SHORT TERM...
High clouds are streaming across northern California and Nevada
ahead of a moderate winter storm which will impact the region
Saturday night into Sunday. This storm will provide strong and gusty
winds along with a period of heavy snowfall for the Sierra as well
as snow to western Nevada by Sunday morning. Those with travel plans
may want to consider completing travel by midday or sundown
Saturday, or wait until Sunday afternoon/evening.
For today, expect increasing clouds with seasonable temperatures in
the mid 50s for western Nevada and mid 40s for Sierra valleys. Winds
across mountain ridgetops will begin to increase this afternoon and
evening with strong and gusty winds materializing across valley
locations on Saturday.
WINDS - Forecast thinking remains largely on track with gusty winds
developing ahead of and along a strong cold front that will move
through the region late Saturday night and early Sunday morning.
Winds across valley and foothill areas look on track to reach into
the 45-55 mph range while ridgetop gusts peak around 100-120+ MPH
late Saturday night into Sunday. These wind gusts may result in
travel impacts for high profile vehicles in addition to turbulence
and wind shear for aviation. Hazardous boating conditions are likely
on area lakes so venturing out onto the water is not advised.
SNOW - Moisture begins to push across NE California Saturday
afternoon with snowfall reaching the Tahoe Basin Saturday afternoon
and into Mono County Saturday night. The main push of snowfall is a
quick shot that will push through ahead of the cold front between
about 10pm Saturday and 4am Sunday which will allow snow levels to
drop quickly to all valley floors. Although a quick shot, unstable
conditions will allow snow showers to persist through Sunday night.
Did increase snowfall for areas across Alpine and northern Mono
County but overall snowfall in the 1 to 2 foot range is expected
through the Sierra. Lake level locations may see 12 to 18 inches
while locations through the Hwy 395 corridor in Mono County could
see around 4 to 8 inches.
Snowfall for western Nevada valleys is a little trickier as a mix of
rain and snow is expected Saturday evening ahead of the cold front
with a changeover to snowfall Saturday night into Sunday morning.
The Reno-Sparks-Carson City could see a quick inch with the front
but likely the best chance will occur post-frontal early Sunday
morning into early afternoon where an additional inch or so is
possible. Confidence is snowfall amounts on Sunday is lower end due
to the convective nature, however impacts will be less with daytime
heating perhaps making roads warm enough to limit accumulations. A
few residual snow showers are likely Sunday evening into Monday with
overall colder temperatures brisk westerly winds remaining. Fuentes
.LONG TERM...Monday through Friday...
A minor disturbance is expected to move through the upper trough
over the West on Monday before ridging begins to build over
northeast California and western Nevada. This could bring another
few inches of snow to northeast California, with moisture and
instability looking sufficient in simulations for some snow shower
spillover into lower valleys, especially north of Interstate 80.
Due to the intensifying late winter sun, road impacts will be most
widespread if the heaviest snow showers fall in the morning when
roads are sub-freezing.
Tuesday through Thursday, a ridge of high pressure is expected to
build over northeast CA and western NV as disturbances focus on the
Pacific Northwest and British Columbia. This should allow
temperatures to rise to around average or slightly above for late
week.
Friday, models begin to diverge regarding incoming Pacific energy
with some simulations showing the tail end of a cold front reaching
into northern NV and CA. Moisture transport projections from the GFS
ensemble show a 25-50% probability for a brief, weak PWAT
plume/atmospheric river for the northern CA coast on Friday,
although inland penetration (past Sierra) looks poor at this time.

Increasing winds (especially ridges) along with high clouds today
will be followed by a moderate winter storm for Saturday into
Sunday. Ridge winds will begin to pick up this afternoon with light
to moderate turbulence possible by late afternoon.
Much stronger winds are expected Saturday with significant snow
accumulations at Sierra terminals for Saturday evening through
Sunday. Snow could also impact KRNO/KRTS/KCXP/KMEV operations by
early Sunday morning, with accumulations of several inches possible
as a sharp cold front brings at least a brief burst of heavier snow.
