  THE FOLLOWING AREA, GREATER RENO-CARSON CITY-MINDEN AREA. 

* FROM MONDAY EVENING THROUGH LATE TUESDAY NIGHT

* A PROLONGED ATMOSPHERIC RIVER LANDFALL WILL PRODUCE RISING SNOW
  LEVELS AND TORRENTIAL RAINS MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY. THE
  HEAVIEST RAINS ALONG THE SIERRA FRONT ARE EXPECTED LATE MONDAY
  NIGHT INTO TUESDAY AND WILL FALL MAINLY IN THE FOOTHILLS. THIS
  COMBINATION ALONG WITH SATURATED SOILS AND A HEAVY FOOTHILL
  SNOWPACK IS LIKELY TO RESULT IN FLOODING ISSUES ACROSS THE 
  SIERRA FRONT.

* THE HIGHEST RISK OF FLOODING IS ALONG CREEKS, STREAMS, AND POOR
  DRAINAGE AREAS MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY EVENING. THE
  GREATEST THREATS WILL BE ALONG CREEKS AND STREAMS THAT DRAIN

.SYNOPSIS...

A series of storms will impact the region this coming week with a
strong winds, periods of heavy mountain snow, and heavy rainfall.
The first storm Sunday night into Monday will bring strong winds
areawide along with mountain snow. A second storm Tuesday into
Wednesday is likely to bring heavy mountain rainfall and a risk for
flooding of streams and poor drainage areas. A third storm Thursday
into Friday will bring more rain and snow to the region.

&&

.SHORT TERM ...

A very wet week is again in store for the Sierra and western Nevada.
Another atmospheric river with origins near Hawaii is going to push
subtropical moisture into the region for most of the week. The
atmospheric river is of the moderate variety, but is expected to
stay generally pointed over California for a good portion of the
week.

Main change this morning was to continue to raise QPF and to
raise snow snow levels more quickly Monday night into Tuesday as
the subtropical airmass moves in. Another change is that there may
not be much of a break in the Sierra between the first two storm
systems with near continuous precipitation along the crest Sunday
night through Wednesday. This will create some hydrologic concerns
on smaller streams, poor drainage areas, and anywhere snow may
dam up rainfall runoff. Currently no main stem rivers are forecast
to reach flood stage but emergency officials should continue to
monitor closely.

*Wind*

Winds will start to pick up along the ridge tops this afternoon
with gusts up to 100 mph possible by this evening. Gusts along the
ridges of 100-130 mph could continue through Tuesday. Winds are
expected to begin to mix down to the surface tonight as a stable
layer forms, enhancing downslope winds into western Nevada. The
strongest surface winds are expected during the morning and early
afternoon hours on Monday when widespread wind gusts could reach
50+ mph (70+ mph in wind prone areas). Hazardous travel
conditions should be expected for high profile vehicles and air
traffic tonight through Monday.

*Precipitation*

The first wave of precipitation tonight into Monday is still
expected to be cooler with snow levels in the 5500-6500 foot
range. This still leaves quite a bit of uncertainty in snowfall
amounts in the Tahoe basin. There is a good chance that the Tahoe
basin will see at least 3-6 inches, but if snow levels stay low
through the first event we could see up to 6-12 inches. Elevations
above 7000 feet should see at least another 1-2 feet with 3 feet
not out of the question with this first wave. Mono County may be
just a little less as the first moisture plume is aimed more
towards the northern Sierra, but snow amounts of 12-18 inches
with up to 2 feet are still possible. Significant travel
challenges in the Sierra should be expected tonight through
Monday evening.

The second wave is when warmer subtropical moisture begins to move
into the region in earnest. Snow levels are expected to start to
rise overnight Monday, reaching 8000-8500 feet by midday Tuesday.
Tuesday night is when the heaviest precipitation is currently
expected with snow levels fluctuating in the 8000-9000 foot range.
For the first two storms, through Tuesday night, the current QPF
forecast is for 3-6 inches along the Sierra crest with 1-3 inches in
the Tahoe basin and in the direct lee of the Sierra. Western Nevada
foothills could see 0.75-1.5 inches with up to 0.3-0.6 inches down
into western Nevada valleys.

This is shaping up to be another intense week of weather for our
region. If you have anything that might be blown away by high winds,
buried by deep snow (in the high Sierra), or be washed away by
heavy rain, today is your day to prepare. -Zach

.LONG TERM...Wednesday through Saturday...

The warm and wet storm will be winding down Wednesday with showers
persisting along the Sierra crest. There will be a general break
between systems for most areas Wed afternoon through Thursday
morning although showers may stick around across the northern
Sierra/northeast CA as moisture remains available. Temperatures will
be mild Wed-Thu with highs pushing 60 degrees or better across
western NV and around 50 degrees even for Sierra valleys.

The break will be shortlived as the third in a series of storms this
week approach. Winds will increase across ridges once again by early
Thursday morning with mixing and increasing gradients likely to push
strong winds down to valley floors by Thursday afternoon and
evening. This will bring another round of rough lakes and choppy air
for aviators.

This system has an AR that is slightly stronger than the ones
earlier in the week but it is more narrow and will be pushing
through the area faster as a cold front finally gets enough steam to
push things through the region. So we have increased QPF a bit in
the Thursday night-Friday morning timeframe but the shorter duration
should keep overall totals a bit lower than the systems earlier in
the week. Another 1-2" is likely along and immediately east of the
crest with 0.50-1.00" for the foothills. Snow levels are going to
start fairly high (7500-8500 feet) Thursday evening but then slowly
lower overnight as colder air works into the area. This means much
of the snow accumulation is going to be above lake level with the
best chance of seeing snow down to 5500-6000 feet being on the
backside or cold side of the system Friday as snow winds down. Once
again, snowfall for the Tahoe Basin is tricky. With wet antecedent
conditions and initial warm snow levels, small creek and stream
flooding is going to remain in the realm of possibility.

A drier pattern will return next weekend as high pressure builds
into the area. Temperatures will be a bit cooler but still close to
seasonal norms. Hohmann

.AVIATION...

Ridge winds will increase once again today as another storm system
approaches. Ridge wind gusts of 80-90 kts are possible by this
evening with further increases overnight into Monday when gusts will
approach 120 kts. Strong winds will spread to most lower elevations
by early Monday morning with periods of LLWS, mountain wave
turbulence, and rotor activity.

In addition, snow will spread into the Sierra this evening with
significant accumulations at KTVL/KTRK and moderate accumulations
possible at KMMH through monday. The snow and wind will result in
poor visibility and low ceilings sufficient to keep conditions below
minimums for an extended period of time. Hohmann
