A warm front will lift northward through the Carolinas Thursday afternoon, in advance of a low pressure system and associated cold front progressing eastward through the Tennessee Valley. The cold front will track east across central North Carolina late Thursday night and move offshore by mid- day Friday. && .NEAR TERM /Through Tonight/... As of 1100 AM Wednesday... A weak, west-east oriented frontal zone will wash out over VA/NC this afternoon. With a dry/stable airmass in place (per 12Z GS RAOB), expect clear skies today with highs in the mid/upper 70s (north) to lower 80s (south). Weak high pressure will build into central NC from the northeast late this evening/tonight as a shortwave ridge builds over the region in advance of an amplifying upper level low over the central MS river valley. Meanwhile a s/w ejecting out ahead of the upper low will approach from the southwest, leading to an increase in shower coverage and intensity Thu night. The low level jet strengthens to around 50kts with decent turning noted in the lowest 6km of the atmosphere. This leads to strong kinematics with storm relative helicity values in the order of 250-400 M2/S2 (per GFS) late Thu night. These numbers supportive of rotating updrafts with any convective columns that develop. Models, however, paint of picture of weak sfc based instability with MLCAPE values no worse than 500-750 J/kg (based off NAM, GFS much weaker). Even the instability aloft marginal so am currently not too excited about thunder potential Thu night. If sfc based convection were to occur, kinematics would support a damaging wind threat for any deep convection with the prime time for convection between midnight and 6 AM. While SPC has our southern counties in the "marginal" portion of the outlook, they, too, do not seem too confident about severe potential over our region. For now, will mention a chance for thunder across the region Thu night. Precip amounts may be generous with the showers as amounts between 0.8-1.3 inches probable across the region. Overnight temperatures generally in the 60s, possibly falling into the 50s across the far west toward daybreak. && .LONG TERM /Friday through Tuesday/... As of 335 AM Wednesday... The timing of the end of the showers/thunderstorms on Friday morning is still a difficult task. It appears that most guidance supports a mid level dry punch to arrive from west around or just before 12z/Friday in the west, rapidly sweeping east across central NC between 12z and 18z (the last place to see the rain end will be the Coastal Plain). There may still be significant QPF during this time frame, particularly in the eastern zones. After the deep moisture and showers are pushed east, the skies will become variably cloudy with a rather strong SW flow at 15-25 mph with higher gusts. This mixing will allow for some spotty sun which may allow for some destabilization during the afternoon. A few isolated showers may develop ahead of the main cold front, which is not expected until later in the afternoon and early evening. Highs generally in the 70s are expected. Drier and colder advection will follow the front Friday night and Saturday. However, the upper low will still be nearby keeping at least some cloudiness around, especially during the afternoon Saturday. An isolated shower will be possible mainly across the northern zones. Lows Friday night will back off into the 40s to near 50 SE. Highs Saturday will be much cooler, in the 60s. A cool and dry pattern is then expected with the NW flow aloft early to mid next week. This flow will be around a closed low over the NE states. Temperatures should average around 10 degrees below normal, with modification in daily highs by mid-week. && .AVIATION /18Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... As of 1100 AM Wednesday... 24 hour TAF period: VFR conditions will prevail through the TAF period. WNW/NW winds at 8-12 knots are expected through mid- afternoon, decreasing to ~5 knots by late afternoon and becoming light/variable after sunset. Expect increasing upper level cloud cover overnight, with ceilings AOA 15 KFT. Looking Ahead: Widespread adverse aviation conditions are expected late Thu and Thu night as a potent storm system, attendant cold front, and pre-frontal line of convection tracks eastward through the Carolinas. Isolated showers /MVFR conditions/ will remain possible during the day Friday as an upper level trough progresses over the region in the wake of the cold front. A potential for isolated showers /MVFR conditions/ may persist into Saturday as an upper trough over the eastern US amplifies in response to additional shortwave energy digging SE through the OH valley.
