...A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 215 PM MDT
FOR NORTHEASTERN EL PASO COUNTY...

At 147 PM MDT, a severe thunderstorm was located near Calhan, or 32
miles southwest of Limon, moving east at 25 mph.

HAZARD...Ping pong ball size hail and 60 mph wind gusts. 

SOURCE...Radar indicated. 

IMPACT...People and animals outdoors will be injured. Expect hail 
         damage to roofs, siding, windows, and vehicles. Expect wind 
         damage to roofs, siding, and trees. 

This severe thunderstorm will remain over mainly rural areas of
northeastern El Paso County.

At 201 PM MDT, a severe thunderstorm was located 9 miles north of
Rush, or 30 miles southwest of Limon, moving east at 25 mph.

HAZARD...60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail. 

SOURCE...Radar indicated. 

IMPACT...Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage to 
         roofs, siding, and trees. 

This severe thunderstorm will remain over mainly rural areas of
northeastern El Paso County.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Currently...

An outflow boundary/cool front was passing across the region at 3
am. Dewpts in the 50s were noted behind this boundary and were
advecting into the region. No significant low clouds were noted
behind this boundary in CO, and for that matter, no clouds of any
significance were noted over CO at 3 am.

Today...

There will be a slightly better chance of showers and storms over
the plains today. However still expect any tsra activity will get a
late start, with the activity likely developing after 3 pm, with the
activity likely getting going in the greater Pikes Peak region and
then southward along the southern mtns. Best svr weather threat will
be over the Palmer Divide region as best juxtapositioning of CAPE
and SHEAR parameters will be over this area, but a local severe
storms could form anywhere on the plains later this afternoon. With
CAPEs in the 1500-2000 range, well mixed EML, shear of 40kts, and
fairly stout straight-line hodographs, the storms on the Palmer
divide may be a bit more on the robust side, with winds pushing 70
mph and golfballs possible. Models due hint at a boundary lying NW-
SE across the plains today (~Calhan to ~Lamar), so a slight tornado
risk is not out of the question. Hi res guidance is explicitly
showing some rotating storms over the region, mainly north of US50.
SPC has the area in marginal risk east of a line from Calhan  to
Campo. I would not be too surprised if this is pushed back westward,
and some slight risk introduced to part of the se CO plains.

Mtns will be hot and dry. Red Flag conditions are expected across
the SW mtns, the SLV and Fremont county as fuels/winds/temps/RHs are
favorable for extreme fire behavior.

Tonight...

A cool front will move down the plains early this evening. This will
keep a threat of showers and isold thunder over the area into the
early morning hours. In addition we will likely see quite a bit more
low clouds on the plains tonight, especially along the plains/mtns
interface. A few of the storms may be on the stronger side,
especially during the evening hours. Some showers may linger well
into the late night, especially on the Palmer Divide/Pikes Peak

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)
Issued at 444 AM MDT Thu Jun 29 2017

Friday-Friday night...Still some differences in models on timing of
embedded wave within the northwest flow moving across the state on
Friday, with the latest NAM solution a tad faster than the GFS and
therefore is not printing out as much precipitation across the
eastern mountains and immediate adjacent plains as the GFS. The
ECMWF has about the same timing of the system across the area,
though is more wet than the NAM. At any rate, front continues to
back across the plains through the early morning hours, with stratus
likely across the I-25 Corridor through mid morning with developing
low level east to southeast flow. How quickly stratus can dissipate
will determine how much instability will be available thru the
afternoon across the I-25 Corridor. For now, have kept isolated to
scattered pops across the eastern mountains and immediate adjacent
plains, with the main focus shifting south through the afternoon.
Cool and moist upslope flow will keep temps unseasonably cool,
especially across the eastern plains, with highs mainly in the 70s
to lower 80s. Continues to look breezy and dry across the western
half of the district, although flow aloft weakens enough to preclude
widespread red flag conditions.

Saturday-Wednesday...Upper level ridging across the Desert SW is
progged to slowly build into the Great Basin and Rockies bringing
bringing generally weak northwesterly flow aloft across the area
into early next week. There are some differences on the strength and
amplitude of the ridge early next week though both the GFS and
ECMWF agree on ridge axis across western Colorado by the middle
of the week. At any rate, there will be enough moisture to keep
daily chances of shower and storms across the area through the
upcoming 4th of July Holiday, with temperatures warming back to at
and above normal.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Friday afternoon)
Issued at 1115 AM MDT Thu Jun 29 2017

KALS...VFR conditions through the next 24 hours. Westerly winds
gusting to near 25 kts are expected this afternoon into the early
evening hours.

KCOS...models in good agreement with thunderstorms developing near
KCOS by 20z this afternoon. This activity will quickly spread east
during the late afternoon. A cold front will drop south into KCOS
by this evening with a northeasterly wind shift. This will likely
lead to lowered CIGS to near 2-4kft by Friday morning.

KPUB...expect all thunderstorm activity to remain north of the
terminal this afternoon. A cold front will arrive by this evening
with northeasterly winds likely gusting in excess of 25 kts.
Easterly flow later tonight will lead to lowered CIGS to near 4

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight

A few severe thunderstorms are likely this afternoon and into this
evening across the plains. Severe thunderstorms will be capable of
hail up to the size of golfballs and wind gusts to 70 mph. The
best chance of severe thunderstorms this afternoon will generally
be north a Fountain to Lamar line. An isolated tornado will also
be possible as the storms track to the east through this evening,
generally north of a La Junta to Lamar line.

Meteorological conditions for extreme fire behavior will occur
across the southwest mountains, the San Luis Valley and Fremont
county.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday

Isolated to scattered thunderstorms will be possible across
the area Friday through Wednesday. Most storms will be in the
afternoon and evening hours, with the main threats being
lightning and wind gusts up to 50 mph. Small hail and locally
heavy rainfall may also accompany the strongest storms.

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...

Weather conditions that meet reporting criteria for spotters will be
possible after 2 pm generally north of a Fountain to Lamar line.

At 101 PM MDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm near
Peyton, or 23 miles northeast of Colorado Springs, moving east at 5
mph.

Nickel size hail and wind gusts of 50 to 55 mph will be possible with
this storm.

Locations impacted include...
Calhan, Ramah and Peyton.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm.
Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe
shelter inside a building or vehicle.
