.SYNOPSIS...A low moved north along the coast overnight and early
this morning as a slow moving but weakening front was moving inland.
A strong low will move north off the coast Friday and spread strong
wind into the coast and coast range with windy conditions farther
inland, in addition to rain across southwest Washington and northwest
Oregon. Cooler air and showers with snow in the Cascades will spread
in Friday night and Saturday. The next front is expected mainly
Sunday night into Monday as snow levels remain below the Cascade
passes. The next system is expected the middle of next week.

.SHORT TERM...Today through Saturday...Showers will continue this
morning then decrease in the afternoon.  There will be a brief lull
in the weather evening as we're in between systems.  The storm system
shaping up for Friday is currently developing near 38N 137W or about
900 miles southwest of Astoria.  Water vapor satellite depiction
shows a cusp at that location indicating it is still in development.
Models track the low north east tonight then north along about 127W
longitude Friday, bottoming out with a central pressure between 972
and 975 mb.  This impressive early April storm expected to impact
southwest Washington and northwest Oregon Friday. This system has
boundary layer winds of around 60 kt over the coastal waters with 850
mb winds of just over 70 kt. Once the easterly gradient with the low
turns more southerly Friday morning, this suggests gusts 60 to 70 mph
near beaches and headlands and perhaps 50 to 60 mph in the coastal
communities. It appears the higher elevations of the coastal
mountains could reach 60 mph as well.

Based on 975 mb and 925 mb winds, winds approach wind advisory
criteria in the valleys as early as Friday morning as a trough
rotates trough the valley. It may still be blustery Friday afternoon
and early Friday evening but 925 and 975 mb winds are easing in the
afternoon.  With the saturated ground and trees starting to put out
leaves, these speeds could lead to some damage. The associated front
moves through on Friday and the precipitation will then change to
showers later in the day, and we might see a few
thunderstorms as well with and behind the front.

Will have to watch for passable rotation in thunderstorms Friday as
the low tracks northward offshore. This will provide wind shear more
favorable for rotation to develop in thunderstorms.  But will also
need the instability to allow convection to develop, which at this
time looks good from mid morning into the afternoon.

Cooler air spreads in Friday night and Saturday and snow levels in
the Cascades will drop below the Cascade passes. Amounts will
probably stay below snow advisory criteria, but could cause the
passes to become snow covered. As the cool upper trough moves through
Saturday it could produce a few thunderstorms in the afternoon.

.LONG TERM...No Changes. Previous discussion follows...Saturday night
through Wednesday...A cool showery pattern sets up for
the weekend as an upper-level trough settles over the Pacific
Northwest. Orographic showers across the area Saturday through early
Sunday then after a lull in precipitation another system brings more
widespread rain Sunday night into Monday. During the weekend, the
snow level drops below Cascade pass levels to around 3000 to 3500
feet late Friday night.   Travelers crossing the Cascades this
weekend should be prepared for snow covered roads. The active pattern
slows a bit late Monday into Tuesday but the still active Pacific
storm track indicates more wet weather to come for mid-week. /mh

.AVIATION...Mostly VFR today and tonight with rain showers
behind a front. East winds will develop this afternoon and
increase this evening as a strong low approaches the region.
Strong south winds are then expected Friday. Gusts of 40 to 50 kt
are likely for the coast and coast range Friday morning and for
the Willamette Valley late Friday morning into the early
afternoon. The low will also bring a threat for thunderstorms
Friday morning into the early afternoon with erratic winds,
hail, and lighting possible.

KPDX AND APPROACHES...Mostly VFR conditions with rain showers
today and tonight. East winds will increase this afternoon with
gusts around 20-25 kt. Then south winds will increase late
tonight into Friday morning with sustained winds around 30 kt and
gusts of 40-45 kt. Thunderstorms are possible Friday morning
through the early afternoon. ~TJ

.MARINE...Winds have eased this morning and will remain below 25
kt through late this afternoon. SW winds this morning will become
east tonight as a strong (975 mb)low approaches the waters. The
east winds will increase this evening with gusts above 25 kt
around 8 pm. Then south winds will rapidly increase tonight and
Friday with sustained winds of 40 kt and gusts to 50 or possibly
60 kt. Storm Force gusts will continue into Friday afternoon then
decrease to Gales Friday evening and to small craft winds early
Saturday morning.

Seas in the low teens this morning will subside today, possibly
down to 9 or 10 feet for a few hours this evening. Then the seas
will rapidly build as the winds increase tonight with seas rising
above 20 kt early Friday morning. The seas will be a combination
of large wind waves, fresh south swell, and a smaller (5 ft) NW
swell, and will peak around 25 feet early Friday morning. The
seas will subside to below 20 feet late Friday evening then
continue gradually subsiding Saturday and Saturday night. ~TJ

...SNOW IN THE CASCADES OVER THE WEEKEND...

A spring storm will bring cooler showery weather Friday night into
the weekend. Snow levels will drop close to 3000 feet. Snow
covered roads crossing the Cascade passes can be expected this
weekend. About 4 to 7 inches can be expected at pass levels from
Friday night through Sunday. Snow showers will taper off late
Saturday night and Sunday.
