.SYNOPSIS...
Arctic high pressure will weaken across the area later today. A low
pressure area will move across the Northeast and Middle Atlantic
regions on Saturday. More arctic high pressure will follow for
Sunday and into much of next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
No big changes to the forecast for today. Surface obs show temps
a few degrees warmer than yesterday at this time and they seem
to be on track for forecast highs mainly in the 20s. Light W/NW
winds this morning will pick up a bit this afternoon, keeping
wind chills no higher than the teens all day for most areas.
The mid-morning satellite VIS imagery shows mainly clear skies
over most of the forecast area. However, a mid-level cloud deck
is pushing rapidly eastward across eastern PA and by midday
should overspread most of NJ and into northern DE/adj MD.
Regional radar shows some light echoes in these clouds, however
any assocd light snow should mostly evaporate before reaching
the ground. Will keep a chance of flurries in the Poconos for
the rest of today.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 AM SATURDAY/...
Behind the departing shortwave weak high pressure passes through the
region this evening. With clear skies and light winds, can expect
good radiational cooling conditions until midnight or so. Another
bitterly cold night on tap with lows in the single digits to mid
teens.
After midnight, clouds increase as weak low pressure approaches from
the west. Temps should hold steady, and may even rise by a couple of
degrees as those clouds spread into the region. Light snow looks to
move into areas generally west of the I-95 corridor prior to
daybreak with a dusting of snowfall possible.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The arctic theme looks to continue for much of the upcoming week.
Temperatures on Saturday will only be around 10 to 12 degrees below
normal, probably one of the warmer days thru the midweek period. By
Sunday, the gains will have been erased and reading more like 20
degrees below normal will be back again. These coldest readings will
extend into Monday. Winds chills will be widespread sub-zero readings
both days with less than -15 across the southern Poconos. Plan
accordingly if you will be out for New Years eve/day activities.
Light snow will be across the area Saturday as a weak low pressure
system crosses the area. Snow amounts in areas N/W of the i-95
corridor could be 1 to 2 inches, falling over a 12 hour period.
Lighter totals S/E. The very cold temps and dry snow will create
slick conditions.
Little, if any, snow is expected early next week, a few snow
showers perhaps across the higher elevations of the srn Poconos
are possible. Yesterday, we were watching the models depict low
pressure move near the coast next Wed/Thu with the possibility
of more snow, but the latest 00Z operational models are further
out to sea with the feature. We will hold onto the low chc/slgt
chc pops for now, with still some uncertainty with the eventual
outcome.
