Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 651 PM EST Tue Dec 26 2017 .SYNOPSIS... Arctic high pressure builds into the region this week, resulting in a prolonged period of very cold weather. A trough is expected to sweep over the region at the end of the week. At the same time, low pressure may develop off the Southeast coast and lift northeast. High pressure should build back over the region Sunday. && .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING/... A strong arctic high centered over the Northern Plains extends southeastward to Virginia and North Carolina early this evening. This will continue to funnel in cold air into our region. As we go through the overnight, an upper level trough amplifies some from the Great Lakes towards the Northeast. There is elongated short wave energy within the base of this trough. In addition, a 140-150 knot 250 mb jet slides east from the Tennessee Valley. Our southern zones become situated within the left exit region of this jet especially toward morning. Some lift is within this region, however it does not look to be much as the jet quickly is shifting eastward. The depth of dry air below cloud base may keep much precipitation aloft from reaching the ground, therefore will keep a mention of flurries in the forecast toward morning for parts of the southern areas (although did shift this northward some). Otherwise, winds diminish and expect increasing mid and high cloudiness overnight with the arrival of the aforementioned disturbance and upper-level jet. The hourly temperature, dew point and wind grids were adjusted based on the latest observations, then the LAMP guidance was blended in for the next few hours. The temperatures could drop quickly this evening as winds go light given the very low dew points. && .SHORT TERM /6 AM WEDNESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... For Wednesday, shortwave energy rounding upper level trough over the east will help initiate a weak surface low off the coast. This will bring considerable cloud cover to much of the area into the morning with some flurries possible over southern Delaware through Sussex County to extreme southern New Jersey around Cape May. Otherwise, dry weather persists with clearing skies by afternoon as the system pushes out to sea. Highs range from the teens over the southern Poconos to the 20s to around 30 elsewhere. && .LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/... The two main stories through the long term period remain the bitter cold expected through out the long term period and the potential for snow. Cold: What we have the most confidence on this period is the arctic cold. An arctic air mass will continue to settle south over our region through the long term period. 500 mb height departures are expected well below average. With the exception of Saturday, Highs through this period are expected to be in the teens and 20s, with lows likely in the single digits and teens. On Saturday, depending on how close the center of the coastal low gets to our region, some areas, especially coastal southern NJ and portions of Delmarva could get close or even a few degrees above freezing if the low tracks close to the coast. Snow: There remains a lot of uncertainty with the forecast for snow. The primary source of uncertainty is in how quickly the coastal low will develop and what kind of a track it will take once/if it develops. With the coastal low, the GFS depicts the development faster but weaker. As a result, the depicted track is further off shore. In addition to the coastal low, a progressive mid and upper level open wave trough will dig southeast from south central Canada into the Great Lakes region. Overall models are in relatively good agreement on this feature, with some minor differences in the details. The ECMWF and CMC depicted the coastal low developing slower and deeper, eventually interacting with the open wave trough. These solutions would result in more snow primarily on Saturday. Given the uncertainty, stayed close to the previous forecast, with the highest chances (30 to 40 %) on Saturday, keeping slight chance as early as Friday. The GFS depicts another coastal low developing on Monday, but given that it appears to be the outlier with the first system, have kept this period dry for now. && .AVIATION /00Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Tonight...VFR with an increase in clouds at or above 5,000 feet. Westerly winds 5-10 knots becoming light and variable at most temperatures, then becoming northwest late. Wednesday...VFR ceilings mainly at or above 5,000 feet should thin out in the afternoon.
