.SHORT TERM...Today through Wednesday night...The upper ridge over
the area will shift east today as a Pacific system pushes east
towards the region. Areas of low cloudiness with varying amounts of
fog have been developing over portions of the Columbia Basin and
south into portions of central Oregon. Visibilities are running a
half mile or less over a good portion of the Lower Basin zones and
will issue freezing fog advisories. Will have to assess other areas
for similar issues as the morning progresses. Expect this fog to
lift by noon with the associated low cloudiness largely breaking up
in the afternoon. This fog and low cloudiness will limit warm up
today in the affected areas. Most areas outside of the fog/low
clouds should warm quite well. The next Pacific system will push
into the Pacific northwest tonight into Wednesday. Snow levels will
be rather high to start and will rise during the Wednesday and
Wednesday night periods. Thus significant snow fall will be limited
to the highest mountain peaks. A bigger problem will be freezing
rain. The challenge has been figuring out the surface temperatures
late tonight into Wednesday morning. At this time feel confident
enough that surface temps will be cold enough and precip will be
sufficient enough to warrant freezing rain advisories for the
Washington Cascade east slopes and the Kittitas valley. Other areas,
such as the Gorge, Lower Basin (OR and WA), Simcoe Highlands, and
the Yakima valley could need similar advisories, but confidence on
timing of best precip and cold surface temps remains low. Winds will
become strong across the south end of the Grande Ronde valley this
evening. These winds look to be a problem beyond Wednesday night. 90
.LONG TERM...Thursday through Monday...An active pattern with
multiple frontal systems will persist through the long term period.
GFS ensemble guidance have standard deviations for pops of 6-14
indicating very high spread and low confidence in timing and
strength. Thursday a front will move through eastern WA and OR with
widespread rain. Rain showers and snow showers will linger in the
mountains Thursday night after the cold front moves east into MT.
There may be a brief break between systems Friday. Friday afternoon
a warm front will move into central OR. This slow moving system will
spread showers over the area Friday night and Saturday. Snow levels
will be mainly 1000-3000 feet. There may be another break Saturday
night/Sunday morning before more fronts come through Sunday
afternoon/evening,Monday, and Tuesday. Spread in the GFS ensemble
members keeps confidence in timing low so I just showed the breaks
between these systems as lower pops in the Columbia Basin and
