Scattered thunderstorms will develop as early as this afternoon along the East Slopes of the Oregon Cascades. Thunderstorms will be slow to move east, beginning to impact the Ochoco-John Day Highlands and Blue Mountains of Oregon Thursday afternoon, before spreading into the Washington Blue Mountains and Wallowa County Thursday evening. The chance of thunderstorms will linger through late Thursday evening in Central Oregon, and until late Friday evening for the Northeast Oregon mountains and Blue Mountains in Washington. At this time, most of the thunderstorm activity is expected to produce LALs up to 3...but LAL 4 cannot be ruled out...especially on Thursday. SHORT TERM...Dense smoke and haze across almost the entire
forecast area this morning. Surface observations showing
widespread 1-3 mile visibility. Fairly strong low level inversion
remains in place today with light winds. Not expecting much if
any improvement in the smoke or air quality. Satellite shows some
mid level clouds moving northward across southern and central
Oregon from the upper low off the California coast. This will
continue through the day. Could see scattered showers or isolated
thunderstorms over central Oregon later this afternoon although
most guidance would suggest it remaining just to our south. Have
adjusted temperatures down with dense smoke layer blocking much of
the solar heating. 94
.FIRE WEATHER...Hazy, smoky and very warm conditions will continue
through today. An upper level trough will move into the area with
isolated to scattered t'storms expected to develop over Fire
Weather Zones 610, 611 late this afternoon. This thunderstorm
activity will only very slowly spread east, moving into the rest
of the northeast Oregon mountains Thursday afternoon and evening.
As the trough moves through the forecast area later Thursday and
Thursday night, the thunderstorm activity should continue to
increase. LAL 3s will be possible, and therefore red flag warnings
have been issued for fire weather zones 610 and 611, with fire
weather watches continuing for zones 640, 642, 643, 644 and 645.

The t'storms are expected to linger through at least Thursday
night in Central Oregon, and until Friday evening over the eastern
mountain zones. There remains some model discrepancies on just how
fast the activity shifts east on Friday. The thunderstorms may
start out fairly dry today over Central Oregon, but should become
wetter (producing upwards of a quarter inch of rain in the core)
by Thursday and Friday as PWATS rise over 1.25 inches. A few of
the storms could be stronger, with gusty outflow winds Thursday
and Friday as deep layer shear and instability increase. 77

SHORT TERM...Today through Thursday night. Smoke from fires in
the gorge continues to effect entire area as the visibility falls
to around one mile. The smoke has prompted and air quality
advisory that remains in effect. A low pressure system south of
the region will push moisture north into central oregon and
combining this with daytime heating could produce a few
thunderstorms mainly along the east slopes of the Oregon cascades
this afternoon and evening. The instability could reach further
north along the washington cascades this evening. The low will
continue to pump moisture north into Thursday and Thursday night
and the thunderstorms activity could expand in coverage to include
the ochoco and blue mountains. Meanwhile the winds could switch
toward the west and some maritime air may work its into portions
of the region late Thursday.
The smoke may reduce sunshine and keep temps in the 80s over
portions of the basin. Elsewhere afternoon high should climb well
into the 90s especially over and near the john day highlands and
grande ronde valley today before cooler temps arrive on Thursday
with an increase in relative humidity.
LONG TERM...Friday through Tuesday. Models in good agreement with
an upper level trough moving into the area on Friday as a short wave
moves north over Oregon. Models are keeping the better moisture west
of Cascades but should still see some isolated to scattered showers
and thunderstorms move through the central and northeast mountains
of Oregon through Friday night. There will be some lingering showers
over the far eastern parts of the area Saturday with westerly flow
and cooler temperatures spreading in from the west. There will be
some decrease in smoke over area as well. The westerly flow continue
into Sunday and Monday as high pressure rebuilds over the western
U.S. The flow will become more southwest on Tuesday as an upper
level low pressure system moves closer to the coast of central
California. As this system moves closer to the coast, some moisture
and instability will be returning to southern Oregon and will likely
spread further north into central Oregon and across the northeast
Oregon mountains by midweek. Temperatures will be cooler through
the weekend and early next week, but still above normal with
readings in the mid and upper 80s.
AVIATION...12Z TAFs...Areas of smoke will continue to plague the
region, producing MVFR/IFR conditions much of the time. Winds will
generally remain under 10 kts but will see some increasing west
winds late Wednesday affecting KDLS, KRDM and KBDN which could begin
to improve visibilities but confidence is not high as to what the
smoke will do. Moisture will be moving north into central Oregon by
late day and isolated thunderstorms are expected along the Cascades
and may affect KRDM and KBDN Wednesday afternoon and evening. 93
