EFFECT THROUGH SATURDAY FOR ABUNDANT LIGHTNING AND GUSTY OUTFLOW
WINDS...

.A weak upper low along the northern California coast will
gradually move northeast through Saturday. This low will push 
moist and unstable air into the region. As a result...scattered 
thunderstorms capable of producing abundant lightning are expected
through Saturday. Thunderstorms will produce gusty and erratic 
outflow winds. Nocturnal thunderstorms are also possible Friday 
night over parts of the area. Thunderstorms are expected to be 
rather dry, especially over the Lower Columbia Basin. Some storms 
could produce up to a quarter inch of rain in the cores. Lightning
strikes outside of the storm cores will have very high potential 
to produce new fire starts, as fuels remain extremely dry. 
Thunderstorms will gradually shift east, and eventually out of the
area Saturday afternoon or evening as a frontal boundary moves 
through. Behind this front winds will shift out of the west and 
increase to between 10-20 mph most locations.

Area Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...Today through Friday...Narrow upper level ridge will
be over the region into Friday with a small low remaining to the
south. Whats left of the low will move across Oregon on Friday as
the ridge axis shifts to the east and the flow transitions to
southwesterly. Much like yesterday...expect the bulk of the the
thunderstorm activity to remain to the south of the forecast area
today...but a stray storm could edge into Deschutes County late this
afternoon or evening. Otherwise expect hazy/smoky skies and hot
temperatures with highs in the 90s and low 100s. It will be warm
tonight with lows in the 60s to around 70 in the lower elevations
with 50s in the mountains. On Thursday expect a slightly better
chance of thunderstorms across central Oregon during the late
afternoon and evening hours...especially Deschutes County. High
Temperatures will be similar to Wednesday. On Friday the threat for
storms may spread northeastward into the northeast mountains and
along the Cascades. Temperatures may cool a little with a few more
clouds around and the influence of marine air in the west. Heat
Advisories for the Columbia Basin and adjacent Valleys through
Thursday may need to be extended for some areas into Friday. 78

.LONG TERM...Friday night through Wednesday...The upper ridge that
has brought the extended period of hot and dry weather will continue
to weaken early in the extended period. The ridge axis will also
drift eastward and put the forecast area on the back side with the
flow aloft becoming southwest. This will transport more moisture and
instability northward into the CWA. As such can expect an increase
in coverage of thunderstorms on Friday evening. Thunderstorms will
be mainly over the mountains and in central/north central Oregon.
There will still be areas of smoke and haze during this time. By
Saturday the upper ridge will move further to the east allowing a
weak upper trough to move into the Pacific Northwest. This will
cause a continued slight chance of showers and thunderstorms over
central Oregon northeast to the northern Blue Mountains. Elsewhere
drier and more stable air will begin to filter into the CWA from the
west. This trend will continue on Sunday with the drier and more
stable air to cover almost all of the CWA resulting in less coverage
of showers or thunderstorms and cooler temperatures. The cooling
trend and dry and more stable conditions will continue on Monday
through Wednesday. By Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon high
temperatures will be slightly below normal with readings in the 80s
lower elevations and 70s mountains. The atmosphere will also become
smoke free Sunday through Wednesday. 88

.AVIATION...12Z TAFs...Widespread smoke and haze will continue today
and tonight with possible visibilities below 6SM at times. However,
most of the time conditions will be VFR. There may be a few isolated
thunderstorms this afternoon and evening south of KRDM and
