The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has issued a Winter
Weather Advisory for snow...which is in effect until 8 PM EDT 
Wednesday. The Winter Storm Warning has been cancelled.

* ADDITIONAL SNOW ACCUMULATION THROUGH WEDNESDAY...4 to 6 inches.

* TIMING...Snow will become more showery in nature later this
  afternoon, with snow showers continuing through Wednesday.

* IMPACTS...Periods of moderate snow may cause untreated surfaces
  to become snow covered and slick.

* WINDS...Northwest 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means that periods of snow 
will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow 
covered roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while 
driving.

.SYNOPSIS...
Mostly dry weather is expected today with high pressure, but below
average temperatures will continue. A storm system is expected
to bring accumulating snow beginning Monday night.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
Snow showers and flurries will continue through the afternoon in
cold northwest flow but with very meager moisture profiles,
should not amount to much. Snow shower activity should diminish
by this evening as the surface ridge finally takes hold and mid-
level flow begins to back toward the west.

Surface high will build overhead tonight. This has the
potential to be a very cold night however, high clouds in
advance of the next low pressure system may limit radiational
cooling potential.

Low pressure ejecting out of the rockies and into the midwest
overnight will make it's approach on Monday. Shortwave energy
tied to this system will dig the upper trough over the region,
and in turn, generate a low pressure system along the Carolina
coast by late Monday afternoon. These two lows will converge
later Monday night but until that occurs, the parent low moving
across the Ohio Valley will start to spread precipitation into
our westernmost zones by late afternoon. Warm advection ahead of
this low...which has once again changed position, per the
latest guidance, should support a rain/snow mix at onset at
least south of I-80. Increasing cloud cover should help to limit
surface heating but what warm advection there is should at least
get us 10 or more degrees warmer than today, but still colder than
the seasonal averages.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
A strong low pressure system will impact the area Monday night into
Tuesday. A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for higher elevations
in WV, MD, and PA through late Tuesday night.

A shortwave trough diving through the Midwest will move a surface
low into the Ohio Valley by Monday evening. Dry mid-level air will
initially hold off precipitation through the early evening. Light
snow, mixing with rain south of Pittsburgh, is then expected to
gradually overtake the area before midnight. Models continue to
suggest drier air and subsidence will be wedged in between a weak
frontal zone through north central Ohio and the strong deformation
zone near Ridges. The result is a relative minima of precipitation
through the central portion of the forecast area Monday night
including through the Pittsburgh metro. Areas to the north could see
a few inches of stratiform snow through day break Tuesday, but
shouldn't challenge 6" in 12hrs.

Questions remain on the track of the 850mb low and the coastal low
transition. Although more clarity on the mid-level low track was
offered by 00z model guidance, there is slight concern over
transitioning precipitation types as the low crosses. At this point,
Bufkit soundings re-enforce the notion of all snow from about 2am
Tuesday on. The current forecast will reflect this as well.

The latter concern is the location of the strong deformation zone on
the western periphery of the strengthening coastal low. 00z NAM
continued to push this zone initially over our eastern counties,
before quickly pulling off to the east. The result of which would be
a shot of heavy snow from 8pm Monday through 8am Tuesday in the
higher terrain. 00z GFS/ECMWF keep this zone a little further east,
but not by much. The result is a very tight gradient of heavy snow
accumulation across model guidance, focused along our border with
WFO State College and WFO Sterling. While still certainly not a lock
to reach Warning criteria, enough confidence exists to issue a
Winter Storm Watch for the high terrain through Tuesday.

As the coastal low bombs out near New England Tuesday, local flow
through the mid-levels will shift to northwesterly. This will
transition stratiform snow to a showery regime, fueled further by
steepening lapse rates as colder air pours in. This could lead to
several more inches of snow accumulation, especially in the Ridges
and north of I-80. While northern zones should see a decent amount
of snow, it will be over quite a long duration. Confidence in
reaching Warning criteria is just not high enough at this point.

Temperatures will fall in the wake of this system to well below
average by Wednesday. Highs Wednesday will be close to average low
values.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Northwest flow snow showers will taper off Wednesday night in the
wake of the departing coastal storm system.  A few may linger into
Thursday, but will maintain a dry forecast for now as surface high
pressure arrives from the west.  Briefly rising 500 mb heights point
towards moderating temperatures on Friday and Saturday, during which
time a frontal system/shortwave passes through with a mix of
rain and snow showers. Another upper trough and colder
temperatures may then arrive for Sunday. Superblend was utilized
heavily for this portion of the forecast.

.AVIATION /18Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Prevailing VFR is expected, outside of the northern terminals
through most of the period. Cold, northwest flow continues to
support lake-enhanced snow shower, albeit light, in the vicinity
of KFKL and KDUJ, with flurries elsewhere. Thus, some
occasional MVFR/IFR visibility can be expected until the
surface high pressure finally build overhead tonight.

Otherwise, stratocumulus should diminish tonight, with high
clouds spreading eastward in advance of the next low pressure
system. The northwest wind will shift to the east-southeast
tomorrow but remain under 10kts.

.OUTLOOK...
The next chance of significant restrictions is expected with the
storm system expected to arrive for Monday night, with issues
continuing through at least Wednesday.
