.SYNOPSIS...
Rain showers will continue tonight until the passage of a cold
front. Colder temperatures and chances for snow return
Wednesday night and Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Band of rain showers with leading wind shift will work east and
exit the region during the early morning hours. Otherwise a
break in precipitation is expected first half of Wednesday
before a fast moving shortwave begins to dive through the base
of a broad upper trough. Amplification in the mid levels should
slow the progress of cold advection for much of the day, with
temperatures remaining nearly steady or rising for at least the
southern half of the CWA. Nevertheless, expect a gradual
transition from rain to snow showers through late afternoon/
evening. Temperatures will remain at or just above seasonal
values for much of the day.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Update made on the evening shift, per collaboration with our
neighboring offices, to issue a Winter Storm Watch for the high
terrain of Garrett and Tucker counties. Previous discussion
below remains applicable as the intermediate model runs continue
to show some inconsistencies. However, concern was that despite
the fairly progressive nature of the low pressure system,
upslope flow in strong cold advection behind the departing
system would easily bring snow amounts above 6 inches.

Previous...
Although all models forecast an amplifying trough digging
towards the eastern CONUS Wednesday night through Thursday,
differences lie within the location and strength of the low
level low, which is progged to develop over the Mid- Atlantic
region. Best understanding as of now of the synoptic set-up is
that sufficient moisture is progged to have precipitation
starting as rain then quickly transitioning to snow via dynamic
cooling while the low develops SE of the CWA. The question is
how much moisture will transport to upper levels to generate
moderate to heavy snow amounts within a short period of time and
how strong the forcing will be.

As of now, the NAM holds the greatest amounts of snowfall
across the southeast zones with model soundings depicting strong
amounts of omega due to the low level warm air intrusion. The
GFS has the greatest deformation zone just east of our ridges
while the canadian model has been trending to more snowfall -
between the NAM and GFS - in the past few runs and developing
the 850mb low just south of the CWA. There is much spread in the
SREF model as well. Overall, a wide range of possibilities
could occur but the trend is that the ridges will get at least
advisory level snow, if not more, as the system intensifies and
moves east.

Flow will then turn to the NW, supporting a period of upslope
and lake enhanced snowfall across the region. Temperatures will
lower to below average levels and conditions will be dry
outside the ridges by the end of the week as ridging and high
pressure develop.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Weak crossing shortwaves in WNW flow should result in periodic
precip chances and moderating temperatures through Saturday.
Precip chances increase Saturday night and Sunday as a trough
advances from the Midwest and crosses the area. Broad NE CONUS
troughing by early next week should result in minimal precip
chances and a return to near seasonal temperatures. Minimum
changes were made to the long term forecast.

.AVIATION /07Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
MVFR ceilings are expected through most of the day as a cold
front completes it's passage overnight, and with low level
moisture in place behind the front. A deepening upper trough is
progged to approach the region late today and tonight,
generating a surface low across nrn VA. This should result in
IFR with more snow and rain late today, and an eventual
transition to all snow Wed night. Gusty SW winds should diminish
after FROPA.

.OUTLOOK...
Periodic restrictions are expected through Thu under upper
troughing and cold W-NW flow. Restrictions are possible again
with a weekend front.
