.SYNOPSIS...
Mostly clear, cold weather continues today. Moderate to locally
heavy snow is forecast for tonight into Christmas Day, especially
across southeast Washington and Idaho Panhandle. The rest of the
week will remain colder than normal. Expect periodic chances for
snow. By late in the week a more significant system may arrive. It
will come with milder temperatures, with a risk for a mixture of
precipitation types.

.DISCUSSION...
Today through Christmas Day...It looks like it will indeed be a
white Christmas for most of the forecast area...with a runway of
fresh powder for Santa's sleigh. Satellite indicates a well
defined frontal system approaching the northwest Pacific Coast
this morning.

Today will be dry and cold with pockets of morning low clouds and
light winds. It will take most of today to adequately moisten up
the air mass over the forecast area before the front arrives and
precipitation begins. The actual frontal lift...initially some
weak isentropic ascent and low level upslope into the Cascades and
over the deep basin ahead of a dying surface low...evolves into a
shearing deformation band as it moves through the forecast area
overnight. The southeastern zones...like in the last storm of two
days ago...will once again bear the brunt of heavier snow
accumulation as it is here that the remains of the surface low
will eject and some semblance of a coherent frontal surface will
remain...augmented by westerly upslope flow into the rising
terrain of Idaho.

For the most part this will not be a big snow event...with
locations north of Interstate 90 receiving on the order of an
inch or two overnight tonight...and possibly little or no
accumulation in the far northeast near the Canadian border.

The Palouse and points south will see the heaviest amounts. The
water equivalent precipitation is not terribly impressive...but
the snow:water equivalent ratios will likely be on the order of
15 or 20:1. This suggests Winter Storm Warning criteria is
likely...so the existing advisories for the Palouse...the
Alpowa/Pomeroy area and L-C Valley will be upgraded to WSWs. An
Advisory will be issued for the Blues...and the Camas Prairie and
Central Panhandle Mountains will remain advisories. Snow amounts
will be comparably high in these zones but the mountainous nature
requires higher criteria for warning issuance.

On Christmas day a general drying from west to east will envelop
the region and by Monday evening only some lingering light snow
showers will remain in the Panhandle mountains. Temperatures will
remain quite cold and well below normal for the next couple days.

Tuesday to Saturday: The Inland NW will be in an active pattern
with several opportunities for precipitation, including the risk
for a significant event late week. While there is ample time for
models to change their stories, they have been hinting at a
potential for a significant system and appear to be trying to
focus on the end of the work week. Initially this week
precipitation looks to be in the form of snow with below normal
temperatures. Yet some milder air may make a run at the area to
allow for some mixed precipitation as early as Thursday over the
far southeast CWA and a broader area along and south of I-90 by
Friday. But first Tuesday the area will be dominated by a west-
northwest flow. This flow and a weak disturbance within it carry a
limited snow threat around the mountains, mainly the Idaho
Panhandle mountains. Some low clouds/stratus will be sloshing
about the region, but there should be some sun mixed in.

Tuesday night into Wednesday a shortwave system moves in from the
west. Models diverge over its track, with some taking in by the
US-BC border and others by the WA-OR border. The southern track is
preferred with better agreement. So a threat of snow will develop
across the much of the region again, but the better risk will be
along and south of Highway 2. This will including the potential
for some significant snow over southeast WA into the central and
southern ID Panhandle. That system moves out but the next will be
on its heels Wednesday night into Thursday, with a warm front and
at least an attenuated plume of moisture nosing toward the region.
It will carry the potential for more light to moderate snow
across the Cascades and ID Panhandle mountains. Decent chances may
also be found over the eastern third of WA and remainder of the
Panhandle. Only a limited risk will be found in the lee of the
Cascades/deeper Columbia Basin. The exception to snow will be over
the L-C valley where the infiltration of some milder air may
allow for a rain/snow mix.

Thursday and especially into Friday the potential a significant
precipitation producer makes a run at the region. Models have been
not totally consistent on this system's track and timing over the
past several days, but in the past 24-hours or so they have
trended to some semblance of a more stable solution. So this
increases confidence slightly to forecast increasing precipitation
through this timeframe, with Friday and Friday evening have the
best threat of significant precipitation. Yet the door is open for
changes given the temperament of the models. Areas toward the
Cascades, Idaho Panhandle and areas north of Highway 2 are more
apt to see snow. However both the GFS and EC indicate a potential
surge of milder air, which could lead to a rain/snow/freezing rain
mix or all rain in areas across the Columbia Basin and southeast
CWA. PWATS rising to 0.50 to 0.70 inches in this region would
support some milder conditions too. Yet the GEM is more
conservative and holds the main mixed risk toward the L-C valley
and the GFS Ensemble Mean is more conservative too, being colder
than the operational GFS. So until I see more solid trend toward
warmer air I will keep more snow in the forecast. Also the
freezing rain potential will be highest at this time in the
leading edges of the system, around Thursday night into Friday
morning coming up through the Columbia Basin. Overall concerns
exists for potential significant winter storm impacts, including
moderate to locally heavy snow and some freezing rain which could
make for some difficult travels and perhaps if heavy enough some
power outage issues. Stay tuned as this system is evolving.

By Saturday the main threat of precipitation shifts into the
mountain zones again, with colder air coming back in to largely
erase the mixed precipitation threat and bring mainly snow. /J. Cote'

06Z TAFS: Satellite imagery shows low stratus cover and/or fog
expanding from the Palouse region and the Northern Panhandle into
the Spokane Area. A strengthening easterly gradient across KPUW
and KLWS is expected to keep the low clouds at bay at KPUW and
clear out KLWS by mid morning. Confidence is low how much stratus
or fog will get into KGEG and KSFF since winds are expected to
shift northeast later tonight. This shift may keep the low clouds
advecting northward this evening away from KGEG. KSFF is expected
to see radiation fog develop late tonight that will lift late
Sunday morning. Light snow will increase across the region Sunday
