.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure tracks from near the Mid Atlantic coast this
morning to southeastern Massachusetts by this evening, passing
near Montauk Point as it does so this afternoon. The storm then
tracks into Northern Maine tonight, then through the Canadian
Maritimes Wednesday and Thursday. High pressure moves through
the region Thursday and Friday. Another low pressure system may
affect the area Friday night through next weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
*** Heavy snow for the morning commute - Dangerous Driving
 Conditions with snow fall rates of 2-4 inches an hour likely***

*** Blizzard Conditions with 1-2 feet of snow across mainly
 interior portions of the Tri-State and 8-16 inches of snow and
 sleet across NYC/NW Long Island and Coastal SW CT ***

*** Near Blizzard Conditions with 4-12 inches of snow and sleet
 mainly this morning over coastal SE CT, the South Shore/Twin
 Forks of Long Island ***

Storm track continues to slide westward. As a result expect SE
portions of the area to mix with sleet and rain this morning and
possibly to all rain this afternoon. Sleet now expected to mix
in with snow over NYC/NW Long Island/SW CT and possibly lower
West Chester County reducing snow totals there. Still have the
potential for 2 feet of snow over the NE 1/4 of the CWA.

Strong Gusty winds remain a threat - with gusts of 40-50mph
expected CWA wide, with isolated gusts of 55 to 60 mph possible
over mainly coastal areas. The strongest gusts should be from
13-17z.

Precipitation changes to all snow before ending this evening.
It should be dry overnight, except for maybe some snow showers
moving in late tonight in far W Orange County.

Comments on models - NAM appears a western outlier, forecast
based on a GFS/SREF/WRF-NMM/WRF-ARW blend. 00Z ECMWF falls in
well with this cluster.

Concerns with forecast - with westward shift in track -
increasing potential for dry air to work in aloft - so
precipitation could end sooner than expected with a period of
freezing drizzle possible late this afternoon/evening. If this
occurs, then snow fall totals, especially over the NW 1/2 of the
CWA could need to be reduced by 6" or so. If NAM ends up being
correct, then even larger reductions would be needed over most
of the CWA. While banding appears most likely to the NW of NYC -
still not fully confident in location/orientation. As a result,
locally higher amounts are possible over portions of the lower
Hudson Valley and interior NE NJ/SW CT.

With temperatures falling below freezing tonight, any water
remaining on roadways could freeze, depending on how quickly
winds come down.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY/...
Axis of closed upper low passes tomorrow with isolated to
scattered snow showers possible.

It will remain much below normal, with highs in the upper 20s to
lower 30s.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
By Wednesday night the powerful Nor'Easter will be moving into
the Canadian maritimes, with strong northwesterly flow developing
on the back side of the system. A secondary low-level trough will
move through the Northeast, providing enough instability and lift
for a few snow showers during the evening. Below normal
temperatures are expected with wind chill values in the single
digits Wednesday night. Below normal temperatures and strong and
gusty winds will continue through Thursday as the upper trough
slowly departs. By Friday, a weak deep layered ridge will pass
through the region, allowing winds to weaken and return to a
southwesterly direction. Warm advection should lead to a 5 to 10
degree overall increase in temperatures, though the values will
still remain below climatological normals. By the weekend, an
upper trough and attendant surface front move through from west to
east with a chance of snow and/or rain. Right now the system
appears to be weak, and uncertainty still exists with the track of
the low and amount of any precipitation that will fall.

.AVIATION /09Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
***HIGH IMPACT WEATHER INTO TONIGHT***

An intensifying storm will move up the East Coast today, pass
just southeast of Long Island late today, and move up into Maine
tonight. Some important forecast changes in the offing with the
09Z amendments based on warmer air advancing into the area
earlier and farther north than previously expected. As it
advances toward NYC metro and Long Island early this morning,
snow should mix with sleet, then may change to a rain/sleet for
a time at KJFK/KLGA/KISP/KGON, with timing details in the
individual TAF. Snow at the terminals just NW of there
(KEWR/KTEB/KHPN/KBDR) should mix with sleet mainly late this
morning into early afternoon. Meanwhile, NE winds should rapidly
increase early this morning to 30-35G40-45KT right along the
coast (KJFK/KLGA/KISP/KBDR/KGON), and 20-30G30-40KT inland.

May have to watch for a brief period of NW winds 40-45kt late
today as precipitation winds down and the low passes by.

.Friday night...Chance of snow mainly after midnight, with IFR

snow, changing to rain by afternoon, then changing back to snow
inland and a rain/snow mix at the coast.

.MARINE...
Strong low pressure tracks through the area waters today, passing in
the vicinity of Montauk Point in the mid to late afternoon hours.
Expect easterly winds and seas to ramp up quickly this morning.
Still thinking that all waters see storm force wind gusts. Flags
therefore remain unchanged. Looks like the strongest winds will
occur in a 3-4 hour period centered during the late morning hours.
Winds then flip to the north, then northwest during the afternoon.
Winds in the mixed layer quickly drop off with this shift, however
there is a chance that forecast gusts early this afternoon are a
little too low. By evening, gusts subside to gale force, however
there's still a chance that the ocean waters east of Moriches Inlet
could see a gust or two to 50 KT early on. Seas on the ocean
expected to build 15-20 FT with waves up to 10 FT even in Long
Island Sound.

For Wednesday and Wednesday night, a tight pressure gradient remains
over the waters, and gales still look likely at least on the ocean
waters and perhaps the eastern Sound and eastern bays as well. SCA
conditions otherwise for the remaining waters.

Winds slowly subside Thursday into Thursday night as a high pressure
ridge moves closer. SCA conds are likely at least through the
evening hours. A brief period of tranquil conditions follows for
Friday as the ridge shifts through, then a return to SCA conds is
possible on Saturday with the approach of the next system.

.HYDROLOGY...
1.75 to 2 inches of liquid equivalent precipitation is expected
through this evening. The only hydrologic issues area possible
over coastal SE CT/Southern Nassau and most of Suffolk County
where a mi with rain is expected and a change to all rain quite
possible (highly likely S shore of Long Island). Minor flooding
is possible over this area, especially if there is a completer
change over to all rain. Otherwise...no hydrologic problems are
anticipated.

No hydrologic issues are anticipated from Wednesday through
Friday.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
With a storm track now expected to be close to the coast, confidence
is increasing in more widespread moderate coastal flooding for the
region this morning/afternoon high tidal cycle. Surge amounts are
generally 1/4 to 1/2 ft higher than previous forecasts.

Widespread moderate coastal flooding is expected across NY/NJ harbor
and along Western Long Island Sound...and for the Eastern bays of LI.
Generally 1 to 2 ft of inundation is expected here.

Localized major flooding is possible along the most vulnerable
southern bay locales of Western Long Island...with up to 3 ft of
inundation.

Some minor coastal flooding concerns could linger with tonight's
high tide...particularly along southern bays of LI.

The elevated water levels and a longshore sweep of 6 to 10 ft
breaking surf during the morning/afternoon high tide cycle is
expected to result in areas of dune erosion with localized washovers
possible along the Atlantic ocean beachfront. Less significant beach
erosion issues will likely linger into Wednesday due to residual
southerly swells of 6 to 10 ft.
