Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...General warming trend with dry weather through the
end of the week and into the weekend. Dry offshore winds will
cause breezy conditions especially over the North Bay starting
Sunday evening. Slightly cooler weather expected next week.

&&

.DISCUSSION...as of 8:30 AM PDT Friday...Clear skies and warm
temperatures can be expected across our entire region today as
offshore flow will combine with a severely squashed marine layer.
Highs will be mostly in the 70s at the coast with 80s to lower 90s
inland. For many areas today will be the warmest day of the week.

Biggest concern for the public today is the ridge of high pressure
that will build into the Great Basin on Sunday. This will set up a
strong pressure gradient between our region and spots to the east.
Highest speeds will be over the North Bay with gusts over 40 mph
likely by Sunday evening/night. Unless 12Z guidance greatly
changes a wind advisory will be issued. Fire weather concerns will
also be greatly elevated during this time.

.PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...Clear skies across the district allowing
good viewing of the Harvest Moon. There were a few wisps of
stratus moving south along the San Mateo county coast earlier, but
those have since dissipated. Some haze or ground fog is showing
up on GOES-16 fog product along the eastern edge of the Salinas
Valley. There is only the shallowest of inversions apparent on the
Fort Ord profiler, only 100 feet at most. Thus, do not anticipate
any visibility or ceiling issues at area airports this morning.

An upper level ridge building along the coast will bring warmer
temperatures to the area today and Saturday. Highs today and
Saturday are expected to range from the 70s at the coast to the
80s to mid 90s inland. Temperatures are expected to begin to cool
slightly beginning Sunday and through the rest of next week.

Meanwhile, a surface high over the northern Great Basin will ramp
up offshore flow by Sunday and Monday resulting in gusty winds
and enhanced fire weather concerns across mainly the North and
East Bay Hills late in the weekend and early next week. Winds are
expected to lessen by midweek as a weak upper level trough
settles in over California. This will also help max temps return
closer to seasonal normals by the end of the week.

.AVIATION...As of 4:29 AM PDT Friday...For 12z Tafs. Minimal
changes from last aviation package. VFR conditions with generally light
onshore flow through the forecast period. The marine layer will
remain extremely shallow and any low clouds that develop will
remain confined to the coast.

High confidence.

Vicinity of KSFO...VFR with only a few high clouds through today.
Light offshore winds this morning will increase and turn westerly
by afternoon, 15-20 kt.

SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR. Light and variable winds through
the morning, increasing out of the west/northwest this afternoon,
around 10 kt.

.FIRE WEATHER...as of 2:48 AM PDT Friday...Increased northeast
winds will persist into the morning hours with strongest winds in
the hills of Napa county...but all of the North and East Bay hills
will see offshore winds with poor humidity recovery this morning.
Offshore winds will decrease by tonight and Saturday bringing
some cooling and higher humidity to the coast. Northerly winds
increase Sunday as an upper trough deepens over the Great Basin.
Strong northerly winds possible Sunday night into Monday as models
indicate 925 mb winds up to 45-50 kt. A fire weather watch is in
effect for the North and East Bay Hills for Sunday afternoon
through Monday night.

.MARINE...as of 03:58 AM PDT Friday...Long period northwesterly
and southwesterly swells will continue through the weekend. The
mixed swell will result in an enhanced risk of large shore breaks
and rip currents at the beaches. Strong northerly winds are
forecast to develop later this evening as coastal troughing
interacts with high pressure over the Eastern Pacific. Strong
winds will last through the weekend, increasing to Gale or near
Gale force for the northern outer ocean waters by Sunday.
