...Widespread Accumulating Snow Monday Night through Wednesday...

.DISCUSSION...Patchy fog with cool morning temperatures will be
the biggest impacts today. Clouds looks to be plentiful as
moisture flows through the ridge of high pressure currently
located over the Northern Rockies. By Monday, the ridge will
flatten leading to a more westerly flow pattern. A strong jet
stream moving in will provide the support for a change to a wetter
and more active pattern beginning Monday night.

A colder air mass from Canada will move into western Montana late
Monday and hover over western Montana through Friday. Moisture
from the southwest will also move into the northern Rockies. Moisture
overrunning this colder air combined with increasing instability
thanks to a 120 knot jet stream over the area will provide the
ingredients for widespread snowfall over central Idaho and western
Montana.

What is important and what is raising caution about this scenario
is a boundary of snowfall that will hover over the Northern
Rockies through much of the week as a few shots of moisture moves
through. It's looking likely that snow will occur across much of
the region and some valley locations could get hit pretty hard
with 8" of snow or more, especially in parts of west central
Montana. There is not a lot of confidence where the heaviest snow
may occur as it depends heavily on where the boundary of highest
snow intensity sets up: 50 to 100 miles could be the difference
between receiving 2" of snow or 8". Nevertheless, widespread snow
is likely across the region with Tuesday through Wednesday
morning being prime time for the most intense snow. The Mission
& Seeley/Swan Valley, the I-90 corridor from Lookout Pass to
Butte, central Idaho, and the Bitterroot Valley all have potential
for moderate to heavy snow at times. Given the uncertainty of
exactly where it sets up please stay tuned for the latest
discussions and forecasts.

Mountain locations could receive a foot or two of snow helping to
boost the currently below normal snowpack.

Thursday onward, models disagree on the placement of continued
snowfall. Some indicate locations south of I-90 could continue to
see snow for much of Thursday and Friday, but other models move
the moisture further south, primarily impacting southern Idaho.
The current forecast leads toward a blend of these two scenarios,
but forecast confidence is low given these uncertainties.

Next weekend continues to look active with periods of snow as a
trough of low pressure moves in from the West Coast.

.AVIATION...A ridge of high pressure with clear skies in
northwest Montana have led to fog formation at KGPI. The current
forecast calls for this fog to remain through mid-morning. That
being said, satellite imagery shows scattered cloud cover coming
in from the west, so fog may fluctuate in density between now and
sunrise. Other locations could see some visibility reductions due
to fog, but dense fog looks less likely given current high
clouds. Fog should thin for places where it does develop by
roughly 29/1700z. Light winds and high clouds will be the norm for
this afternoon and evening.
