.DISCUSSION...A moist southwesterly flow will continue to spread
mountain snow and valley rain showers across the Northern Rockies
through at least mid morning this morning. Area passes such as
Lookout, Lolo, and Marias pass will continue to see snowfall,
however, after sunrise, the road surfaces should warm enough to
allow what snow that does fall to melt. Therefore, current Winter
Weather Advisories should be able to expire by 10 AM MST.
Another surge of moisture associated with a cold front is still
expected to begin to impact the region late this afternoon and
evening, and will bring more mountain snow, with a mix of rain and
snow to the valleys. Northwest Montana and north-central Idaho
will see the impacts first, with snow levels hovering around 4000
feet. 2 to 4 inches of snow will be possible for the higher
valleys, with the mountains and mountain passes along the MT/ID
border seeing slightly higher amounts. At this time, the cold
front is expected to move through west central and southwestern
Montana after midnight tonight, with some models hinting at the
front stalling somewhere between Missoula and Butte and points
south into Lemhi County, ID. Several inches of snow, up to 6
inches or more, will be possible for the higher terrain, with 1 to
2 inches for the Missoula/Bitterroot valleys by late morning
Sunday.
Colder air will settle in over the region behind the departing
shortwave, leaving the Northern Rockies under a northwesterly
flow. This will allow for an extended period of light snow showers
to fall through at least Tuesday morning. An additional 3 to 6
inches of snow will be possible for the mountains and mountain
passes, while area valleys of western Montana and north central
Idaho will see lesser amounts of a trace to 2 inches.
By midweek, more moisture continues to stream over the region,
providing another round of moderate snowfall to area passes and
mountainous terrain Tuesday through Wednesday. Winds during this
time will likely be too strong to allow much precipitation to fall
in the valleys. What does fall will be a mix of rain and snow.
Forecast models diverge quite a bit once they get out past
Thursday of next week, so very little changes were made to the
ongoing forecast. Overall, it continues to be unsettled with
seasonable temperatures.

.AVIATION...Southwesterly flow will continue to stream moisture
northeast through the region, producing mountain snow and valley
rain/snow showers through late this morning. A cold front is
expected to slide southeast through the Northern Rockies this
evening and overnight, which could bring snow levels down to some
valley floors. KMSO and KGPI will be the most likely terminals to
see snow showers impacting the runways after 05/0000Z this
evening, and continuing through Sunday morning.
