.DISCUSSION...A large area of moisture will stream across the
region for the rest of the week and into the holiday weekend.
Light snow will continue through early Thursday and begin to
intensify for mountain and pass areas Thursday afternoon through
Thursday night. Warmer air approaching Thursday night and Friday
will bring a change to rain for the lower Idaho valleys of western
Clearwater and Idaho Counties, with pockets of freezing rain
possible in the Idaho and western Montana mountain valleys, mainly
south of I-90.
A low pressure area will track across the northern Rocky Mountain
region Friday and Friday night, bringing copious moisture, while
colder air moves into the area from the north. The combination of
these features will bring widespread heavy snow Friday and Friday
night, with difficult travel conditions, slowly improving by
Saturday afternoon. Local blowing snow conditions are likely in
canyons west of the continental divide Friday night and Saturday
as arctic air moves in.
New Years Eve and New Years Day look mainly dry and cold. Active
weather returns next week, but with no major storms expected
through mid-week.
