.DISCUSSION...There are a few different features that are
dominated the weather pattern this morning. At the surface the
southern and eastern progression of cold air continues to lower
snow levels while adding gusty winds. The main low pressure system
in Washington is sending spokes of precipitation that have been
resulting in moderate to heavy snow rates, and there is also a
steady stream of moisture from central Idaho into southwest
Montana resulting in continuous mixed precipitation at low
elevations and snow elsewhere. The continual moderate to heavy
snow rates and gusty winds in much northwest Montana are expected
to result in very poor travel conditions once again this morning.
The cold front should reach the Camas Prairie of north-central
Idaho during this morning and bring a quick change to snow, so
roadways are likely to become slick down to around 3000 feet
including Grangeville this morning.
The overall trend of precipitation to move out of northwest
Montana and into north-central Idaho, west-central/southwest
Montana holds for today. Snow is expected to become heavy for a
period of time this afternoon and evening, which should result in
a very slick commute, so winter weather advisories have been
extended. The current weather system will weaken tonight so a
general trend of decreasing snow rates are likely through Saturday
morning. Snow showers are still possible for Saturday but their
impact should be much less than the last couple of days.
The next weather system looks to arrive by Saturday evening so
light snow will spread throughout the region from north to south.
Snow will be come widespread Sunday afternoon lasting through
Monday afternoon, cold air in place will keep snow levels at
valley floors. Snowfall amounts will be light to moderate with 1-4
inches in the valleys and 3-7 inches for the mountain passes. The
heaviest snow will occur on Sunday night, and stretch from north-
central Idaho into west- central Montana with lesser accumulations
in the Mission/Flathead valleys and across Lemhi County. Be
prepared for winter driving conditions over the passes, while the
Monday morning commute in the valleys will likely be slower and
more challenging than normal, allow extra time for travel.
For Tuesday into Wednesday, forecast models hint at a brief dry
period with cold temperatures. Morning lows will be particularly
cold with teens expected along with single digits toward the
Divide. An active cool and wet weather pattern looks to resume
late Wednesday through at least the end of next week.

.AVIATION...Another active weather day is in store for today. Cold
air continues to infiltrate western Montana and north-central
Idaho and snow levels will be lowest of the current weather system
thus far. Current radar loops show moderate to heavy snow showers
currently passing through northwest Montana and these are going to
continue through this morning. As the trough and low pressure
system to the west moves east there will be a trend for colder
temperatures and snow to move southward. North-central Idaho has
not had as many impacts from snow but that will change today with
much lower snow levels. By this afternoon snow is forecast to
become widespread south of Highway 12 and periods of moderate to
heavy snow are likely into this evening. Gusty north and east
winds continue in much of western Montana but will also become
more widespread by this afternoon. Winter storm warning and winter
weather advisories are in place for all of north-central Idaho and
western Montana with snow impacts likely through tonight.
