Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Missoula MT
342 AM MDT Wed Nov 1 2017
.DISCUSSION...The beginning of the overall pattern change to more
wet and colder has officially begun with moisture in
northwesterly flow aloft combining with a cold front from the
east. A dry layer near the surface has been slow to moisten
overnight but is forecast to become saturated by sunrise,
resulting in snow levels down to most of the valley floors of
western Montana. Portions of western Montana are still expected
to see most of the ingredients come together for at least a short
period of moderate to heavy snow intensities. Winter weather
advisories have been expanded to cover the most likely places to
have impactful snow through this morning. Missoula is currently
not included in an advisory, but snow levels are low enough for
light snow accumulations in the valley this morning.
Colder air is likely to fill in from the east as the cold front
moves to the west today. Gusty east winds are likely with the
passage of the front. This evening could become interesting in
west- central Montana with cold air in place and the beginning of
warm frontal precipitation. A period of enhanced snowfall is
possible in central Idaho and west- central Montana this evening
before the main focus moves into northwest Montana.
It still appears more and more likely that Lincoln and Flathead
counties are going to have almost continuous snow from Thursday
morning through Friday morning so the winter storm watch remains.
On Friday, the eastward movement of the main trough will once
again push the moisture and cooler air back to the south, focused
over Northwest Montana in the morning shifting into north-central
Idaho and west-central Montana in the afternoon. Lower elevations
of Clearwater and Idaho counties will see up around a half inch of
rain with nearby mountains seeing significant snowfall. The lower
valleys of west-central Montana will likely see a rain/snow mix
during the day. Snow levels lower further on Friday night, leading
to a decent chance of light snow accumulations in the valleys of
west-central Montana, meanwhile highway corridors of north-central
Idaho may see snow covered roadways for a time.
Moisture and the colder air will continue southward on Saturday
pushing into southwest Montana and Lemhi County. Keep in mind that
forecast models have consistently shown the scenario described for
Friday and Saturday, but have varied some on the timing, thus
impact timing may still change.
Overall, confidence continues to be low in the forecast details
for early next week due to considerable forecast model
variability. However, there is decent confidence that additional
showers will occur Sunday into Monday with snow levels down to
valley floors in most areas.

.AVIATION...Current water vapor loops show moisture streaming into
the region under northwesterly flow. Surface observations also
show colder air approaching from the east which will combine with
the moist flow to produce widespread lowered ceilings and snow.
Winter weather advisories have been issued for much of western
Montana for snow that will develop during the morning and become
moderate to heavy for a few hours. Snow levels will lower to most
valley locations although not all will see snow this morning.
Places like Grangeville and Hamilton have had breezy winds all
night, which will continue for much of the day, and keep
precipitation to a minimum. Gusty east winds are forecast to
develop in much of western Montana today with the cold front, so
snow, winds, and lowered ceilings are going to make for
unfavorable conditions for much of today. There will be breaks in
snow today but another round of snow will develop during this
afternoon and evening in central Idaho and west-central Montana.
This area of snow will move into northwest Montana by Thursday
morning.
