.SHORT TERM (Today and tonight)...
One more pleasant day for East TN before we begin to feel the
effects of Irma's remains. Winds in the 925-700 mb layer will be
at an easterly direction, creating a downslope flow that will help
warm temps in the Valley a little. With this and mostly sunny
skies, highs should reach into the 75 to 80 range in most spots.
High clouds on the fringes of Irma may begin to increase late
tonight in southern portions of the area.

.LONG TERM (Monday through Saturday)...
NHC has the track of Hurricane Irma moving through GA and across
northern AL. Because of the increased time over land ahead of
Irma's much anticipated arrival...wind speeds and moisture will be
slightly lower than our states to the south...and the time period
of heavy rain and gusty winds will therefore be slightly shorter
than previously forecasted.

Wind speeds and rain accumulation totals are expected to increase
from east to west across the Southern Appalachians beginning early
Monday afternoon. By Tuesday morning...the rainfall accumulation and
wind speeds will have reached the peak values. The greatest chance
for higher wind gusts and highest rain accumulation will be in areas
south of I40...as well as the higher elevations of eastern TN.
Prevailing winds of around 25-35 kts are expected...along gusts
around 40-50 mph. Rainfall accumulation totals will be between 2-4
inches with locally higher amounts possible if the rain bands bring
strong showers across the same area. Areas north of I40 will be
farther away from the center of the low...and with less dynamics and
moisture. Wind speeds will be between 15-25 mph with gusts around 30-
40 mph. Rainfall accumulations will around 1-2 inches. With these
wind speeds across the entire area, several trees and powerlines
could be knocked down...as well as localized power outages. The
rainfall accumulation totals could cause flooding
problems...especailly in areas that do not drain well or have a
history of flooding.

The system then continues to weaken and move east...and will then
take most of the moisture and lift with it temporarily...allowing
for only light scattered showers to remain through late Tuesday
night through much of Wednesday. Wednesday night through Thursday
afternoon...models are fairly consistent on this low getting picked
up by an upper level trough moving through the northern Ohio Valley.
Rain chances will increase one last time from SW to NE as the
remnants of Irma shoot to the NE and become an event of the past.

Friday and Saturday...diurnal showers are possible...with the
greatest chances on the Plateau and higher elevations of east
TN...as well as NE TN and SW VA. Mid and low level flow will be from
the SW...keeping a decent amount of moisture over the area.

Temperatures will be at least 10 degrees below normal from Monday
through Wednesday due to the cloud cover and rain showers. By
Thursday...a gradual warming trend will be in place as clouds begin
to clear and SW flow slowly brings warm and moist air to the area.

to 4 inches with gusts up to 50 mph across SW NC and the higher
elevations of east TN.
