   even be a few gusts that approach high wind warning criteria, 
   near 60 mph over the higher terrain as the winds become 
   westerly. 

 * The strongest wind gusts are expected from late Tuesday

   into Wednesday. 

 * In addition to the gusty winds, lake effect snow will develop

00Z raobs/latest wv imagery and RAP analysis show an upr rdg over
the Great Lks downwind of a deep trof over the wrn CONUS. At
the sfc, Upr MI remains dominated by a sly flow btwn a hi pres
rdg exiting to the e and a lo pres center in the nrn Plains to
the e of the wrn trof. There is a good deal of waa cld cover over
Upr MI related to some hier mstr shown btwn about h85-8 shown on the
00Z GRB raob, but lingering drier near sfc air (where dewpts are
arnd 30) has prevented a greater expansion of lo cld/fog. But
looking farther to the s, the sly flow is advecting sfc dewpts in
the 40s n thru WI behind a warm fnt. But the mid lvl dry air/absence
of any forcing under the upr rdg axis has limited any pcpn to just a
few sprinkles/some drizzle at the leading edge of this greater near
sfc mstr. Looking farther to the w, a vigorous shrtwv near Utah is
beginning to lift ne out of the wrn trof.

Main fcst concerns for today involve incrsg chcs for fog/drizzle as
the moister near sfc air arrives fm the s. Focus for tngt is on
shower/even some TS potential ahead of cold fnt associated with
strong shrtwv/deep sfc lo pres fcst to lift ne into nw Ontario
overngt.

Today...As the vigorous, negatively tilted shrtwv over Utah early
this mrng lifts to the ne, the sfc lo pres in the nrn Plains is fcst
to deepen as it moves into srn Manitoba toward 00Z. The incrsg sly
flow wl advect the moister air in WI into Upr MI, resulting in
expanding lo clds/fog and some drizzle/sprinkles under lingering mid
lvl dry air. While there may be some improvement in vsby during the
aftn as max temps rise well into the 40s and even the lo 50s in the
downslope areas over the w following the sfc warm fropa, some fog wl
linger over the melting sn pack. Although the hi near sfc stability
shown on the fcst sdngs wl limit mixing of the hier h925 winds
incrsg up to 40 kts by later in the aftn, sfc winds could gust as hi
as 30 mph, especially in the downslope locations near Lk Sup.

Tngt...The deepening sfc lo pres in Manitoba this evng is fcst to
lift into far nw Ontario overngt, with colf fnt on its srn flank
moving into Upr MI. Models have generally slowed the advance of this
fnt, which is consistent with the hi amplitude pattern fcst. The
arrival of sharper dpva/deep lyr qvector cnvgc/upr diffluent flow
ahead of the negatively tilted shrtwv that wl cause 12hr h5 hgt
falls over 150m fm 00Z-12Z Tue over warm conveyor belt mstr ribbon

expanding shower coverage as early as the evng over the w. With
mucapes rising as hi as 200-500j/kg and SSI as lo as -2C, expect
some embedded elevated TS. Despite the hi near sfc stability,
some of the stronger storms may be able to mix the hier winds
above the sfc based invrn to the ground. The arrival of vigorous
mid lvl dry slotting under the jet surge region of the shrtwv wl
diminish the showers/TS overngt even before the cold fnt passes
during the ngt. Expect at least some patchy fog ahead of the fnt
before the arrival of some drier near sfc air results in some
improvement following the fropa.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday)
Issued at 416 AM EST MON MAR 6 2017

The main forecast highlights are the strong and gusty southwest to
west winds expected through the middle of the week and then the
return of more seasonable temperatures into the weekend. With an
active pattern in store, there will be multiple chances for snow,
including LES near Lake Superior and a few rounds of area-wide snow,
especially towards the end of the week and weekend.

On Tuesday, models are in better agreement with the cold front
pushes east of the area early in the morning and the rain and
thunderstorms exiting eastern parts of Upper Michigan. With the main
surface low to our north-northwest and the upper-level low still
slowly rotating across the area, the models have been consistent
with the dry slot wrapping up into the area during the day. The
combination of subsidence within the dry slot and steepening lapse
rates from the surface up through at least 800-600mb, expect
southwest winds to become quite strong and gusty. A few forecast
soundings still are showing deep mixing up through 600 to 500mb
given the steep lapse rates progged to develop towards the late
afternoon/evening hours on Tuesday. Even if mixing does not develop
to 700mb, or higher for that matter, it may not matter much with a
50-60kt winds within the lowest 2km. Momentum transport values
continue to show the potential for wind gusts up to 40 to 50mph in
some locations. Given the strong subsidence overspreading the area,
would not be surprised if a few locations see wind gusts that high,
or even a bit higher, especially towards the west end of Upper
Michigan near Lake Superior. This time frame will need to be
monitored for a potential wind advisory. Tuesday afternoon through
the overnight hours into Wednesday, with lingering upper-level
energy overhead expect wrap around precipitation to push east across
the area. Light rain will initially develop before transitioning
back over to snow overnight and towards daybreak on Wednesday as
colder air filters into the region.

Wednesday the main surface low will continue to lift north into the
Hudson Bay with the main axis of the upper-level trough moving east
of the area, allowing a stronger shot of cold air advection to move
through Upper Michigan. Therefore, expect the gusty winds to linger
on Wednesday, along with the development of LES in the west wind
snow belts. On Thursday, winds will finally begin to weaken and a
shortwave will push across the area allowing for a slight chance of
area-wide snow. As we progress into Friday, behind the shortwave,
850mb flow will veer around to the northwest with about bout of cold
air advection. This will allow the LES to transition into the
northwest wind snow belts.

How things unfold this weekend into early next week still look
uncertain. The GFS is the outlier, as it does not maintain the
northwest 850mb flow like the Canadian and ECMWF. Given the upper-
air pattern, prefer the ECMWF/Canadian solutions at the moment and
will keep mentions of snow in the forecast, but this will be
especially likely in the northwest wind snow belts.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Tuesday afternoon)
Issued at 1254 PM EST MON MAR 6 2017

Southerly flow will steadily increase across the area this afternoon
through tonight ahead of an approaching deep low pressure system and
associated cold front. A fairly sharp inversion ahead of the cold
front and near the warm front, will keep each TAF site at IFR
conditions. The worst condtions will be at KSAW this afternoon into
this evening where favored upslope flow will keep ceiling near or
below airport minimums. The inversion will also keep the strongest
winds aloft, giving low level wind shear at each of the TAF sites.
Once the cold front slide through this eveing through the overnight
hours, LLWS will dissipate as the column becomes well mixed,
allowing for gusty winds through the the mid and low levels of the
atmosphere. The winds could really be gusty during the day Tuesday,
out of the west to southwest, as the pressure gradient tightens and
cold air is advected into the TAF sites. The cold air, advecting in,
will also be dry allowing for mainly VFR conditions at each of the
TAF sites late tonight through Tuesday.

.MARINE...(For the 4 AM Lake Superior forecast issuance)
Issued at 434 AM EST MON MAR 6 2017

Today, low pressure will traverse the northern Plains and lift
northeast into the Upper Mississippi River Valley. This will enhance
the pressure gradient and allow southeast winds to increase to
around 25 to 30mph through the day. Tonight, as low pressure lifts
northeast into southern Manitoba, it will deepen and further enhance
the pressure gradient and wind speeds across the lake, with gale
force gusts expected across the east. A strong cold front will also
push east across the area tonight allowing winds to veer
southwesterly and increase in speed. With the nose of cold air
advection impacting primarily western parts of the lake through the
overnight hours, expect this cold air advection to work with
increasing post-frontal subsidence, to transport the very strong
winds aloft down to the surface. Therefore, across the west and
north central parts of the lake, expect sustained gales with gusts
approaching 45 knots. A few storm force gusts to 50 knots will be
possible, especially across north central portions of the lake.
During the day on Tuesday expect southwest gales to linger across
much of the lake, with the strongest gales and a few storm force
gusts out west. It is possible that there will be a brief break in
the gale force gusts across the east; however, wind gusts will still
be approaching 30 to 35 knots. Tuesday night into Wednesday,
southwest winds will become westerly with sustained gales of around
34 knots holding on across much of the lake. Expect the gales to
linger into Wednesday night and veer northwesterly. By Thursday, the
northwest winds will begin to decrease to around 20 knots across the
east, with lesser wind speeds out west. Friday looks similar to
Thursday, except with northwest winds increasing to 20 to 30 knots.
This weekend winds will be a bit variable, but look to remain at or
below 20 knots.
