The forecast is on track for today. There was a line of lower
clouds over MSN and the Dells that helped produce light snow this
morning, but that is gradually dissipating. This was due to a weak
deformation zone in an axis of dilatation. This will not have much
of an eastward progression.
Elsewhere, we will be waiting for the low levels to saturate in
order for the snow to develop and expand from southwest to
northeast through mid afternoon. I am confident in at least light
snow everywhere, but amounts may be lower in the northern
counties. At least a dusting will likely lead to slippery road
conditions due to the cold temperatures.
Wind chill values are still expected to get down below -20 late
tonight into Saturday morning. A wind chill advisory will be
needed.

Northwest winds will pick up in the wake of an arctic front just
after midnight and persist through Saturday evening. The timing of
the Small Craft Advisory still looks good.

.AVIATION(18Z TAFS)...
There is a narrow zone from the Dells to just north of Madison
with MVFR cigs around 2500 ft that is producing light snow. This
is not expected to shift much through late morning. To the
southwest of that line, the dry air in the low levels is eroding
from the top down and once that saturates from southwest to
northeast, snow will spread into southern WI. Expect MVFR cigs
(1-3 kft) and visibility (1-3SM) with the snow.
Expect at least light snow/flurries across all of southern WI by
mid afternoon, but the main axis of measurable snow (around an
inch) will be from the Dells to Madison to Milwaukee, with a
dusting north of that line. Snow will taper off to flurries late
this evening. Look for a clearing trend late tonight as the arctic
air settles over srn WI.

Today and Tonight...Forecast Confidence is High.
The models continue to have fairly good agreement with a nw to se
swath of snow with the main axis of strongest lift and snow accum
from nw IA to nrn IL. This is where the strongest 850-700 mb
frontogenesis and warm advection will occur. Light snow will be
likely this afternoon into the evening as far north as a line
from WI Dells to Port Washington. Snow amounts will range from a
trace over east central WI to one inch from Madison into se WI and
around 2 inches over sw WI. An arctic front will then arrive after
midnight with temps falling below zero by sunrise on Sat. Wind
Chills will also begin to reach 15 below to 25 below zero by
sunrise.
Saturday through New Years Day - Confidence...Medium
Main story will be the bitterly cold temperatures. A Wind Chill
Advisory will likely eventually be needed for Saturday morning as
the combo of the frigid temps/winds support wind chills below -20F.
A brief switch in the wind direction is expected Saturday night
into Sunday morning as winds turn a bit onshore. This results in
the potential for lake effect snow showers as a favorable delta-t
will be in place between the lake waters and 850 temps. Overall
wind chills will be in the teens below zero, so may not need a
Wind Chill Advisory for Saturday night. Another brutally cold
night is expected Sunday night with wind chills expected to drop
below -20F for much of the area. High temperatures for the first
of the year will struggle to climb above zero.
Tuesday through Thursday - Confidence...Medium
High pressure drops to our south Tuesday with a WSW low level
flow setting up ahead of another reinforcing cold front. Pretty
decent agreement that this cold front moves through on Tuesday
night. The ECMWF has backed off from the 12z run on widespread
QPF Wednesday, converging more towards the GFS and GEM solution
with just some snow shower potential with the front. May get close
to Wind Chill Advisory criteria again Wednesday night with some
consensus between the GFS and ECMWF that surface ridging may ease
the winds by Thursday.
AVIATION(06Z TAFS)...Sct-bkn035-040 and flurries will prevail
