Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Milwaukee/Sullivan WI 641 PM CDT Wed Apr 12 2017 .UPDATE... Rain will clip the northern forecast area through mid-evening, with widespread rain reaching the west by late evening. Rain will then spread eastward overnight. .AVIATION(00Z TAFS)... Other than light rain or drizzle clipping the northern forecast area through mid-evening, looks like main area of rain will hold off until late evening. Will see rain then move through the forecast area west to east late evening and overnight. May see visibilities drop below 6 SM for a time in any moderate rainfall. It will take a while for the lower levels to saturate, so should see mainly VFR ceilings until later tonight into Thursday when MVFR conditions arrive. Could see some IFR ceilings for a while tomorrow, especially toward the IL border. && .PREV DISCUSSION... (Issued 320 PM CDT WED APR 12 2017) TONIGHT AND THURSDAY - Forecast Confidence...Medium. Mid and high level clouds will overspread southern Wisconsin through the evening. Most of the returns over northern WI on radar are not reaching the ground. These are associated with 700-600mb warm air advection. A vigorous shortwave will track across southern WI this evening, along with another push of 600-700mb warm air advection and upper divergence. Shower chances will initially increase across central WI while southern WI has a better chance of remaining dry this evening. The stronger low level frontogenesis will bring a round of rain to southern WI during the overnight hours. Look for the rain to diminish Thu morning, although low clouds and a cool east wind will stick around through at least early afternoon. The NAM model is showing a slower movement with this system than the GFS. The NAM is slowest of all the models. There is debate about whether or not the warm air can creep back into south central WI on Thu afternoon, or if the steady east winds off the Lake will keep the warm front stuck to our south. Used a model compromise for temperatures. THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY - Forecast Confidence...Medium. Passing short wave trof and scattered to numerous showers expected tonight into Thursday will help to strengthen a low level baroclinic zone across northern IL and southern WI on Thursday. This baroclinic zone will begin to shift northward on Friday as southerly winds in the low levels strengthen across the Upper Midwest ahead of upstream long wave troffing and cold front moving across the central and northern Plains. These strengthening winds will tap into deeper column moisture and cause precipitable water values to rapidly increase and double to around one inch by Friday evening. There are some minor differences in the short term guidance regarding exact timing of passing mid-level short wave and core of warm air advection. However most guidance shows this lifting mechanism affecting southern WI a few hours earlier on Friday, more from mid- afternoon into the evening. However still thinking best time for scattered to numerous showers and storms will be from 23z Friday through 05z Saturday. MUCape of several hundred joules possible so will continue thunder mention with a few possibly producing small hail. Low level and surface warm front shifts north of the area later Friday night and Saturday morning. Warmer and drier air aloft will decrease threat of convection for a time during this period. Some question as to how much atmosphere will be able to recover Saturday afternoon and evening ahead of approaching cold front due to potential lingering outflow boundary in the area and possible cloud cover. Never the less, would not be surprised to see Marginal Risk get stretched closer to southern WI in next update for Saturday aftn/eve. CWASP values increase to .6 to .7 around 00z Sun. EXTENDED PERIOD... SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY - Forecast Confidence...Medium. Will continue to carry high chance or likely POPS for a time Saturday evening as potent mid-level short wave moves across the western Great Lakes. Deeper moisture will be in place as column precipitable waters expected to be over an inch. Forecast soundings for 00Z.Sun showing eroding mid-level capping during the evening as surface frontal boundary moves through WI. GEM-NH most aggressive with stronger front moving through srn WI during the evening while GFS and ECMWF weaker and more baggy. Will continue Thunder threat and at this point, can not rule out a few isolated strong to severe storms across srn WI during the evening, if enough clearing takes place earlier on Saturday. Cooler, more stable conditions return for Sunday and continue into early the following week as high pressure passes across srn Canada and the Great Lakes. Broadscale long wave trof over the eastern Pacific wl continue to eject parade of weakening mid-level short waves ENE across western CONUS into the upper midwest through next week. Rain chances will likely return to the area on Tuesday along with warmer temperatures. Hence temperatures likely to remain near or above normal through the end of the week. GFS 5-day 500H means indicate heights 50-75meters above normal across much of the central CONUS through the following weekend. AVIATION (21Z TAF update)... VFR conditions through the evening. Rain chances increase toward central WI during the evening. Rain is expected across all of southern WI during the overnight hours, along with low clouds developing. Look for rain to diminish Thu morning, but low clouds and light fog will linger through at least the early afternoon, along with brisk east winds. MARINE... Increasing east winds overnight into Thursday will lead to higher waves. Winds and waves are expected to remain below small craft advisory criteria. Low pressure tracking through the region over the weekend will bring gusty westerly winds to the nearshore waters Saturday into Sunday. A small craft advisory will likely be needed for wind gusts up to 30 knots. FIRE WX... Breezy southwest winds will gust as high as 25 to 30 mph on Saturday ahead of approaching cold front. Afternoon temperatures are expected to peak in the low to mid 70s in the afternoon. However more humid dewpoints are expected at that time, mostly in the mid to upper 50s. This will serve to keep minimum relative humidity values higher in the 45 to 55 percent range.
