.TODAY AND TONIGHT...Forecast Confidence Is High.
Rain will increase in coverage today, as deep low pressure lifts
northeast toward the area. The models are in disagreement with
specific timing and location of the anticipated banding or
evolution of the rain areas through tonight. The complex and deep
layered forcing will result in a rather amorphous rainfall pattern
over time. But, the overall trend will see scattered showers this
morning, becoming a more widespread rainfall this afternoon and
tonight.
There does seem to be agreement that we will see an enhanced
precip area over or just west of our western forecast area, lined
up along the inverted h8 trough stretching across western
Wisconsin. The other enhanced area would stretch across southeast
Wisconsin and points south in Illinois and Indiana. This is
between the h8 and sfc low tracks. The southeast will see
precipitable water values increase to just over an inch. In
general, look for about 1/2 to 1 inch of rain through
tonight, with the highest amounts in the southeast.
.TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT...Forecast Confidence Is Medium.
Kept PoPs going into Tuesday morning, as forecast soundings remain
nearly saturated with some 500 mb differential cyclonic vorticity
advection shifting through. Things then dry out briefly Tuesday
afternoon across the area. Temperatures look to be around or
slightly above seasonal normals.
Main issue will be how much upward vertical motion and deep layer
moisture will exist with the system passing to the south of the
are Tuesday night into Wednesday night. The NAM is the furthest
north with the surface and 500 mb low tracks, which brings bunch
of QPF in the form of snow across the area Wednesday into
Wednesday night.
The GFS/ECMWF/Canadian models seem more in agreement with keeping
the low tracks further to the south during this period. Leaned
much more toward these solutions versus the outlier NAM. This
would keep the best upward vertical motion associated with low to
mid level frontogenesis response just to the south and southeast
of the area.
Still, there should be enough upward vertical motion with the
differential cyclonic vorticity advection to bring QPF into the
southern and eastern counties Wednesday into Wednesday night. Kept
the higher end PoPs here during this period, lower to the north
and west. Temperature profiles in the low levels look to be rain
during the day Wednesday, with some light snow mixing in Wednesday
night in the eastern counties. Any accumulations look to be very
light at this time in the east Wednesday night. Temperatures look
to be a bit below seasonal normals Wednesday, then near normal
Wednesday night.
.THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY...Forecast Confidence Is Medium.
Models in this portion of the forecast were showing high pressure
gradually slides southeast across the region Thursday night into
Friday night. This should bring a period of dry conditions to the
area. Steady warm air advection during this period, and into
Sunday, should result in a gradual warming trend. Did not make
much changes to the blended PoPs and temperatures in this period.

Not seeing much eastward progress of low clouds last few hours,
and even seeing some erosion in parts of eastern IA. With drier
conditions expected for much of the late night, wl postpone low
ceiling development until Monday.

Increasing low level moisture over cool Lake Michigan waters
should result in areas of fog through tonight. Low pressure
passing by to the south today will result in Small Craft Advisory
winds and waves tonight through early Tuesday afternoon.
Another low pressure system passing by to the south will bring a
prolonged period of strong northerly winds for Wednesday into
Friday. A Small Craft Advisory will likely be needed for that

It still looks like the highest QPF amounts from the system late
Tuesday night into Wednesday night will be in the southeast
counties. Amounts in the 1.25 to 1.75 inch range are forecast for
this area, with lower amounts to the north and west. This should
result in gradual, steady rises in area rivers in the southeast
parts of the forecast area. The Fox River in the southeast
counties, as well as parts of the Rock River, are the most prone
to rises above bankfull and perhaps flood stage. Will continue to
monitor river stages in these areas, and issue hydrology products
as needed.
