...HEAVY LAKE EFFECT SNOW IN FAR EASTERN WISCONSIN CONTINUING INTO
TONIGHT AND POSSIBLY TUESDAY MORNING...

.Periods of heavy lake effect snow is continuing across eastern 
Wisconsin this afternoon. The lake effect snow will continue 
tonight and into Tuesday morning with storm totals of a foot to a
foot and a half for the lake counties including portions of
Washington and Waukesha Counties. Farther west, light snow will 
gradually end from this afternoon into the evening with minor 
additional snow accumulation. Modest east to northeast winds may 
cause drifting snow at times with some blowing snow possible near 
Lake Michigan.

  bringing the storm total to 7 to 15 inches by Tuesday morning. 
  The snow will be dry and powdery inland, possibly a bit wetter 
  toward the lake. 

* WINDS / VISIBILITIES...Northeast winds 10 to 15 mph. Gusts up 
  to 20 to 25 mph near Lake Michigan. Areas of blowing snow and 
  drifting snow especially near Lake Michigan. Significant 
  reductions in visibility will occur in the heavier lake effect 
  snow showers. 

* IMPACTS...Plan on very difficult driving conditions today into

.Lake effect snow showers will continue to affect portions of east
central into southeast Wisconsin overnight. The snow showers will
be occasionally heavy and will reduce the visibility to one
quarter to one half mile. Additional snowfall in these snow
showers will be 2 to as much as 5 more inches. 

Modest east to northeast winds gusting to 25 mph at times will 
cause areas of drifting and patchy blowing snow. The drifting snow
may result in slippery spots returning to roadways already plowed
and cleaned.

main snow band has shifted south into Illinois. However, there

No surprises with 06Z model data. Snowfall forecast for today into
Tuesday looks to be on track.

.AVIATION(12Z TAFS)...

Snow will persist through the day today, winding down across the
west later this afternoon into the evening. Snow will continue in
the east tonight into Tuesday due to lake effect. Will be closely
monitoring the development of this lake effect, as it will have
the potential to bring locally heavy snowfall for a time.
Locations most likely to be impacted by this are from Milwaukee
southward.

Overall, expecting another 2-6 inches through the remainder of the
event, with the highest amounts in the east. It will be mainly a
dry snow with ratios around 15-17 to 1, though could be a little
wetter near Lake Michigan.

Winds will increase later today into this evening, then persist
overnight into Tuesday. Could see some blowing and drifting of
snow, the best chance for this near Lake Michigan where winds will
be the highest.

TODAY AND TONIGHT...Forecast Confidence...High

Widespread snowfall will continue into this morning, tapering off in
the west during the late morning and afternoon hours as low pressure
passes by to the south. Highest amounts today will be in the east
due to longer duration of synoptic scale forcing along with lake
enhancement.

Snow will continue in the east this evening and overnight due to
lake effect under north-northeast flow. Main question tonight
remains what the exact wind direction will be, as this will have a
big impact on where a single band of lake effect snow might set up.
Solutions range from the highest amounts occuring between Milwaukee
and the IL border, to mainly south of Kenosha. Generally split the
difference among solutions due to the uncertainty. Taking a blend
has washed the amounts out a touch, so wouldn't be surprised to see
amounts a little higher than forecast where the snow focus sets up.

Might see a little blowing and drifting of snow near Lake Michigan
later today and tonight, as winds could gust to 30 mph.

May be able to eventually cut back a few counties early out of the
advisory in the west, but not enough confidence right now to mess
with the end time for this area.

Below normal temps will continue today and tonight.

TUESDAY - Confidence...Medium
Focus will shift to lake effect snow potential. The progs continue
to show a favorable fetch/thermodynamics favoring lake effect snow.
Delta t values are in the mid teens celsius. Consensus of the guid
suggests primary band may shift to our south and east with better
qpf offshore and just a glancing shot of lake effect snow showers
for our area. Will still carry up to an inch mainly from MKE county
to the south. The NAM basically shows all the QPF offshore with only
teen pops in our far southeast. May be able to end the inland
portion of advisory before 18z. Will lean towards GFS pops and even
a bit higher than that as some of this will likely be ongoing from
the overnight hours. We will continue to be in the throes of the mid
level cyclonic flow with a wave riding through on the western wide
of the trough. This plus the low level thermal trough should at
least result in a mix of clouds and sun outside the lingering lake
influence.

TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY - Confidence...Medium
High pressure and quiet weather will prevail. With fresh snow cover
temps may be colder than Superblend guid. Tuesday night into
Wednesday looks like the coldest period based on 925 temps with some
boost into Thursday as return flow starts to favor thermal
modification. Only the ECMWF suggests some precip into our far west.
So confidence in the small Superblend pops there not great.

THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY - Confidence...Low to Medium
Next system will affect the area this period. There will be a mid
level shortwave with an associated low level cold front. The 850
temps look fairly warm (single digits celsius) so expect to see some
rain and a possible mix with the GFS showing a slightly colder
solution. The ECMWF shows a colder rush of air into WI behind this
system on Saturday while the GFS shows a glancing shot with colder
airmass heading off more to our east.

SUNDAY - Confidence...Medium
Mid level ridging is expected to prevail with low level waa getting
underway. The GFS shows any precip associated with next system
staying to our west through 00z Monday.

AVIATION(06Z TAFS)...Look for steady snow tapering off from west to
east this afternoon across south central areas, but likely continuing
through tonight in the southeast due to lake effect snowfall. CIGS
and/or VSBYS will likely be IFR through about 18z today, then
gradually improving to MVFR levels thereafter. Snowfall rates
will be in the 1/4 to 1/2 inch range through early this morning,
becoming lighter today except near Lake Michigan. This will be a
dry snow, but initial melting on any pavement surfaces still above
freezing could cause a layer of heavier wet snow.

East winds will back to northeast today and increase to 10 to 15
knots. Expect higher gusts near Lake Michigan.

MARINE...Will keep the Small Craft Advisory timing as is. Winds and
waves will probably be borderline this morning into the afternoon,
but close enough to just leave the advisory going. Winds and
waves will pick up late afternoon into tonight, slowly easing
Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

Wisconsin, south central Wisconsin, and southeast Wisconsin.

Snow will continue through tonight with Winter Weather Advisories
remaining in effect. Several inches are expected with the snow
gradually diminishing from west to east tonight.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

Areas of southeast and east central Wisconsin near Lake Michigan
will see the Winter Weather Advisory continue Tuesday morning as
lake effect snows persist there. Total snowfall for this long
duration snow event are expected to be 4 to 9 inches with the
highest totals in the east closer to Lake Michigan.

Spotter activation is not anticipated, but snowfall reports are
appreciated.
