.DISCUSSION...16/00Z NAM in. 16/00Z GFS in through 168hr.
Currently a long wave trough is offshore along 130W with strong
southwest flow aloft over the Pacific Northwest. Short waves
ejected by this trough are supporting surface fronts, and one of
those fronts is now moving through the Medford CWA. Waves have
formed on this front, and that is slowing its progress.
There is plenty of precipitation over the area with a snow level
of 5500 to 6000 feet. There won't be enough rain to worry about
flooding, but snow at the upper elevations will be significant and
Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect.
The snow level will drop to 3500 feet Thursday morning but by
then the steady precipitation will have ended. Numerous showers
will affect all of southern Oregon and northern California
Thursday afternoon through Friday morning as more ejected short
waves move through.
The trough will move onshore Thursday night into Friday. Even
then, one last short wave moving down the backside of the trough
will support shower activity into Friday.
Once that last wave moves through Friday morning, the air mass
will stabilize and dry out as a long wave ridge edges onshore.
This will provide a break in the action Friday night into
Saturday.
Saturday morning will be very cold due to clearing skies combined
with a cold air mass. Low temperatures will be in the upper 20s
to lower 30s west of the cascades and in the teens east of the
Cascades.
The ridge will break to the east Saturday, and southwest flow
aloft will return to the area Saturday night into Sunday, opening
the storm door. Cloud cover will increase as the next upstream
trough approaches the coast.
Long Term Discussion from the Wednesday afternoon AFD..Sunday
night through Wednesday. Overall, we'll maintain an unsettled
weather pattern early-mid next week, but disturbances after Monday
will have sub- tropical origins, so we'll likely have above
normal temperatures and increasing snow levels.
After much agreement between the 12z models through Sunday, guidance
tends to diverge a bit early next week with respect to another
strong upper trough and associated frontal system moving onshore
into the PacNW Sunday night through Monday. The 12z ECMWF moves this
system through the area quickly, such that precipitation would be
all but over by Monday afternoon. But, the 12z GFS forms a wave
along the front and brings another round of precipitation through
Monday night into Tuesday. While the GFS has been going back and
forth on its solutions during this time frame, the ECMWF has been
steady in its depictions. It is also notable that the GEFS/EC
ensembles are more closely aligned with the 12z ECMWF. Therefore, we
have weighted the forecast more heavily in favor the 12z ECMWF with
a brief short wave ridge building in and most areas drying out
late Monday/Monday night into Tuesday. Despite the lower confidence
in timing details, this frontal system should bring a pretty good
shot of precipitation to the area Sunday night into Monday morning.
Snow levels will be typical of a mid-November system lowering to
near 5000 feet.
After a brief short wave ridge, another system will develop
over the Pacific and move toward the area Tuesday. Since its
origin will be the sub-tropics, expect a surge in snow level at
some point Tuesday into Wednesday to near or perhaps even briefly
above 9000 feet. Confidence is lower on timing and strength of
this system, but it should bring more wet weather at mid week.

the Cascades where it is continuing to bring widespread rain and
snow, MVFR, mountain obscuration, and gusty southerly low level
winds. The front will exit the area early Thursday morning. A weaker

MVFR and IFR accompanying rain and snow showers with areas of
mountain obscuration. Mainly light showers and snow showers will
continue across the area Thursday into Thursday night, especially
