.SHORT TERM...An upper level ridge will strengthen over the area
today and remain in place into early next week. The pressure
gradient associated with the surface thermal trough will weaken
today as the thermal trough builds slightly north and moves
inland. Gusty dry winds over the coastal mountains will gradually
lower late this morning. With the ridge in place expect hot and
mostly dry conditions to remain in place today into the weekend.
Temperatures are expected to soar into the 100 to 105 range today
across western valleys and in the 100 to 110 range on Saturday.
These hot temperatures in the lower to mid 100s continue over
western valleys Sunday and Monday. The heat combined with
overnight lows only lowering briefly into the mid 60s to near 70
will bring the risk for heat related illness. Also smoke from area
fires will create air quality impacts through the Labor Day
weekend. See the NPWMFR and AQAMFR for details on the excessive
heat warnings and air quality alert.

There will be a slight change in the pattern with southerly
moisture moving up into the area Sunday through Wednesday. Weak
shortwaves on Sunday combined with some increasing mid level
moisture will bring a slight risk for thunderstorms on Sunday and
Monday, mainly to the higher terrain in Northern California and
into the Cascades. However the moisture is fairly limited so may
just see mainly cumulus buildups on these days. Moisture is
expected to increase further Tuesday into Wednesday as a low
pressure center originating from near the Gulf of Mexico moves
northward off the California coast then northward on Wednesday
becoming located off the southern Oregon coast. This low will
send moisture and upper level disturbances into the area and
models show increasing chances for thunderstorms over southwest
Oregon and Northern California by Wednesday afternoon. Of note,
is that thunderstorms that develop on Wednesday are likely to
bring moderate to locally heavy rain.

Smoke from area fires will continue to bring decreased air
quality through the weekend and into next week. Expect areas of
significant smoke from the Cascades west and in portions of
Klamath county through the weekend and into early next week.

Tuesday and Wednesday temperatures will decrease slightly but high
temperatures still remain hot, in the upper 90s to near 100 in
western valleys and will be in the upper 80s to low 90s across
the east side. The combination of heat and smoke may bring
continued impacts to area residents into next week.

Then Thursday into Friday, models are trending towards showing an
upper trough moving towards the Pacific Northwest coast. There
remains uncertainty though as to whether this trough will shift
inland Friday into Saturday or remain offshore. The track of this
trough will be important in determining if temperatures decrease
further and if air quality from smoke may improve late in the
week. Confidence is low the details for this period and will need
to monitor future model runs.

.AVIATION...01/00Z TAF CYCLE...Strong north winds at OTH with gust
to around 30 knots will continue until this evening but winds are
not expected to go completely calm overnight. As a result of the
offshore winds, conditions should remain VFR for most of the night
until winds decrease below 5 knots and low clouds reformed around 10-
12Z. Over the remainder of the area...IFR visibilities with the
thickest smoke will persist in southern Curry County and western
Siskiyou County. Elsewhere...areas of MVFR visibilities from
wildfire smoke will persist. There will be a gradual worsening trend
late this evening at LMT to MVFR visibility. /FB

.MARINE...Updated 200 PM PDT Thursday 31 August 2017...The latest
observations at buoys 15 and 27 show breezy north winds above small
craft advisory. High pressure offshore and a thermal trough along
the coast will bring strong north winds and very steep short period
seas tonight into Saturday morning. Winds are expected to reach gale
force south of Port Orford beyond 5 nm from shore. Gales and very
steep wind driven seas are likely to peak this evening but linger
into Friday morning. The thermal trough is expected to drift
westward over the coastal waters Saturday and Sunday leading to
lighter winds and diminished seas. North Winds will briefly increase
again on Monday. Seas are expected to become swell dominated on
