.A dry, unstable air mass will move over the area the rest of this
weekend into early next week. Northeast winds could still be 
locally gusty along the southwest Oregon Coast into this evening,
but these should ease Sunday and Monday. South winds are expected 
to also be gusty each of the next 2 afternoons in the Shasta

Area Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...The forecast has been updated to reflect a lack of
evening stratus at the coast, and a band of high level clouds
that will linger until around 5 AM early Friday morning along the
Oregon/California border. Stronger low level northwest winds have
improved air quality in much of southwest Oregon, especially
Jackson and eastern Josephine County. There has also been modest
improvement in the Shasta Valley. Unfortunately, smoke remains
thick near existing fires and in Klamath, Siskiyou, and Modoc
Counties. According to the HRRR model, weaker winds will allow air
quality to trend worse again during Friday...then late day winds
will not be quite as strong as today with improvement in southwest
Oregon during Friday evening that will not be as substantial.

The 00Z GFS remains consistent with its previous run regarding a
strong warming and drying trend into early next week. It will be
hotter on Friday then the heat...especially in areas with smoky
skies...will require effort to stay cool and hydrated.

.AVIATION...25/00Z TAF CYCLE...A band of marine stratus is
lingering along the Umpqua divide in Coos and Douglas counties
with the CIGS around 3000 feet has diminished. Elsewhere, smoke
continues to impact the region from multiple fires.

Along the coast...VFR cigs will continue into the early evening.
However models are suggesting CIGS falling into IFR categories
late tonight. We are a little skeptical with this because the
model soundings do not suggest a very stable boundary layer, which
is what we would like to see for IFR cigs and building fog. None
the less, keeping IFR cigs for KOTH and the coast along Coos
county around 12Z through 17Z Friday morning.

West side valleys...The big story here is the smoke from all the
fires around the region. Increasing low level flow from the north
west will improve visibilities at MFR with pockets of lingering 5
to 6 SM. South west flow aloft will basically keep a smoke
ceiling around 4000 to 5000 feet because of all the fires in
northern California and smoke is expected to increase again
during Friday afternoon.

East of the Cascades...Westerly flow is bringing smoke into the
east side valleys and reducing visibilities down to 3 miles at
times.  We'll see smoke settle tonight resulting in temporary MVFR
conditions before lifting back to VFR in the morning. -Smith/DW

thermal trough strengthens... winds will increase to gale force
south of Gold Beach beyond 5 nm from shore Friday. Gales will then
persist through Saturday evening with Small craft advisory winds
continuing over the rest of the area. The trough will weaken
Saturday night through early next week with winds and seas

.PREV DISCUSSION... /Issued 310 PM PDT Thu Aug 24 2017/

DISCUSSION...A cold front has brought cooler temperatures and higher
humidity to most of the forecast area today, with temperatures 5
to 15 degrees lower than yesterday at this time, and humidity
about 10 percent higher overall. This cooler, relatively moist air
mass will be shortlived as temperatures jump higher tomorrow in
response to an upper ridge building over the region. Before the
ridge builds, lingering moisture and instability are creating some
cumulus cloud fields east of the Cascades, and there is a slight
chance for a thunderstorm or two to form later this afternoon, but
abundant lightning is not expected.

Forecasting and communication efforts today focused on the evolution
of the fire weather environment into next week and the smoke impacts
that are being felt across the forecast area. I'll leave the really
detailed information regarding fire weather to the fire weather
discussion below, but I'll highlight the major aspects of the
forecast here.

First, for the hot and dry pattern. The air mass will become
progressively warmer through Monday. The mean GEFS 850mb temperature
for the Medford area is 25C, and this ranks in the warmest 10
percent for this time of year. Additionally, looking at the
moisture through the atmosphere, the GFS20 suggests precipitable
water values (0.36in) on Sunday will be some of the driest
(driest 5% or so and maybe record dry) for this date in history.
All this points to a critical fire weather environment given all
the active fires in the area...and a stark departure from the
weather we're experiencing right now. One note is that smoke could
keep temperatures lower than forecast, and we'll be evaluating
smoke coverage in the upcoming days for potential lowering of high
temperatures. Last but not least, increasing northeast winds and
drying conditions are expected in Western Siskiyou County and
Curry County over the next few days/nights.

For smoke, many places have seen a reprieve in heavy smoke compared
to yesterday, but we expect with hotter and drier conditions, and
less winds in the next couple days, we'll see a return of smoke to
places like Medford and Grants Pass. Reports of 1/4 mile visibility
around Happy Camp, and analysis of satellite imagery, prompted the
issuance of a Dense Smoke Advisory in some Western Siskiyou County
river valleys.  This continues through tomorrow.

Looking into the extended, midlevel moisture eventually creeps up
into areas east of the Cascades per the GFS by the middle of next
week. This is indicating a bit of an increase in thunderstorm
potential, but its too early to jump on putting thunderstorms in the
forecast. We'll continue to monitor and highlight this potential in
discussions for now. Another note about the extended is that the
GEFS and CFSv2 both suggest that any reprieve from above normal
temperatures will be brief and that upper ridging and very warm
temperatures will build back into the region late next week.

FIRE WEATHER...Updated 230 PM PDT Thursday, 24 August 2017...

..AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF ACTIVE BURNING CONDITIONS EXPECTED FRIDAY
INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK...

Latest high resolution guidance is showing an isolated thunderstorm
or two popping up in portions of NE Lake County late this
afternoon/early this evening, but these should quickly move
east-northeastward out of the area and the thunderstorm threat will
end by around 02-03z. The marine layer really held strong in the
Coos/Umpqua region today with some cloud-cover still present there
at mid-afternoon. However, high pressure aloft will build over the
next few days resulting in strong warming and drying across the
area.

Tonight into Friday, a surface thermal trough will strengthen over
the area resulting in stronger offshore northeast winds, especially
over the Coast Range and into portions of western Siskiyou County.
It should be noted up front that this thermal trough is NOT expected
to be as strong as the one last week/weekend. However, this one does
present a potentially dangerous situation, particularly in southern
Curry County where the Chetco Bar fire is burning and within just a
few miles of the coast. Despite the increase in offshore flow
tonight into Friday morning, we are expecting humidity recoveries to
be OK, generally in the 55-70 percent range, lowest over the upper
slopes/ridges. It will really dry out beginning Friday, and
especially Friday night into Saturday with poor humidity recoveries
and a continuation of gusty NE offshore winds. For the
aforementioned reasons, we have issued a Fire Weather Watch for
Friday evening through Saturday morning in fire weather zones
618/619 (south of Gold Beach), due to the combination of gusty NE
winds (10-15 mph with gusts of 25 mph) and low RH (35-45%). Rapid
fire spread impacts could be significant. Model guidance is then
showing the lowest relative humidity recoveries Saturday night into
Sunday, but NE winds should ease. The thermal trough will gradually
weaken and move inland Sunday into Monday. So, along the coast,
we'll see increasing onshore flow by early next week with higher
humidity and less wind. However, with the thermal trough moving
inland, fires burning across the remainder of the area will be
susceptible to increasing fire behavior due to a very dry, unstable
air mass. Model guidance is showing high Haines 5 and, in some
places, high Haines 6, which could lead to plume dominated fire.
We'll be monitoring this potential over the next few days.

In the extended, there is still some uncertainty with how fast
the upper level ridge will break down, but it does appear that at
least some cooling will occur with more marine air pushing farther
inland west of the Cascades after Tuesday. Thunderstorm potential
is low, but increases a bit toward midweek. -Spilde
