Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Medford OR
914 AM PDT Tue Aug 8 2017

.SHORT TERM...The forecast remains on track with the main weather
maker for the next few days being the upper low off the coast of
northern California. Shortwaves around this combined with moisture
and instability will bring another round of thunderstorms into
the area this afternoon and evening.

High resolution models are showing that storms are likely to
initiate over southwest Siskiyou, eastern Modoc and southeast Lake
counties this afternoon then north and west across Northern
California and into southwest Oregon. The highest risk for
scattered thunderstorms today is across Siskiyou, Modoc in
Northern California and over southern and western Jackson county,
far southeast Josephine county, across the southern Oregon
Cascades and eastward into Klamath and southern Lake counties in
southwest Oregon. Isolated thunderstorms are also possible in many
other areas west of the Southern Oregon Cascades.

Storms are expected to bring the potential for moderate to
locally heavy rain and small hail. Despite the rain, these
thunderstorms will continue to bring critical fire weather
conditions to the area due to dry grass, brush and timber along
with the the scattered nature of these storms and potential for
lightning outside the areas of rain.

Overnight tonight into Wednesday morning there is a slight risk
for nocturnal thunderstorms and showers.

With the low remaining in position on Wednesday, expect similar
conditions and areas for thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon and
evening with a slight risk for lingering showers and thunderstorms
overnight Wednesday. Going into Thursday, the low begins to push
inland over the area and develop into an upper trough. This system
will bring additional thunderstorms on Thursday. May also see
additional showers mixed with thunderstorms on Thursday.

.AVIATION...08/12Z TAF CYCLE...Along the coast and over the coastal
waters...Areas of MVFR/IFR cigs/vsbys over the waters and along the
coast will persist into the coastal valleys but not far into Umpqua
Basin. The lower conditions will burn back to the coast by late
Tuesday morning, then move back onshore in the evening.
Inland...VFR will prevail through Tuesday evening...except for
areas of MVFR vsbys in smoke near wildfires. Isolated to scattered
thunderstorms will develop over just about the entire inland area
Tuesday afternoon and evening.  Gusty and erratic winds and
turbulence will likely occur near thunderstorms.

.MARINE...Updated 200 AM PDT Tuesday 8 August 2017...Increasing
north winds will bring small craft advisory conditions to an area
south of Cape Blanco this evening through Tuesday evening. Have
brought the winds down somewhat to match observations, and it looks
like the small craft conditions will be marginal at best. Have left
the small craft advisory in place because confidence is not high
enough in the decrease in winds to eliminate it completely.
Meanwhile,choppy steep seas will develop over almost all of the
waters tonight and will subside Tuesday night. The remainder of the
week will be relatively quiet in terms of winds and seas. -Schaaf

.PREV DISCUSSION... /Issued 620 AM PDT Tue Aug 8 2017/

..Updated Fire Weather Discussion...

DISCUSSION...The closed low off NW California will continue to be
the main driver today. The timing of each short wave disturbance
will be the key and models are bringing potent short waves across
most of our forecast area this afternoon. We have toned down POPS
for this morning as sky has gone mostly clear overnight and it
will take most of the morning before cumulus clouds develop.
However, we've increased POPS in the afternoon and precipitation
water increases. As with the case from yesterday, Siskiyou and
Modoc Counties will see showers and thunderstorm first with these
storms moving into southern Oregon in the late afternoon into the
evening. Both the NAM12 and GFS20 show plenty of instability and
this afternoon is expected to be another active day. Thunderstorms
that form this afternoon could drift farther west into Josephine
County as the steering flow is mainly out of the east.

There is not a lot of change for Wednesday as the main low
pressure continues to spin off NW California. There could be more
cloud cover and this could limit surface heating. There will
still be a lot of instability and thunderstorms could be
widespread albeit more embedded in showers. We have raised POPS
and could conceivably go to likely across the higher terrain.

The low is forecast to come further inland on Thursday. The GFS
has gone ballistic on QPF. While moderate convection showers are
possible, confidence is not high on what the GFS is forecasting,
especially when the ECMWF has not followed suit. POPS could still
be high with thunderstorms embedded in showers. In this scenario
we would need to lower max temperatures for Thursday
significantly. The low does not actually move out of the area but
instead starts to fill and is forecast to become a weak trough by
Friday.

It appears that next weekend will be a cool down as both the GFS
and the ECMWF are in line at bringing a broad upper level trough
and a surface front inland.

FIRE WEATHER...Updated 600 PM Monday 7 August, 2017...Thunderstorm
threat remains high today as the close low off NW California
continues to spin a series of disturbance inland. Lightning threat
this morning is low as it will take sometimes to build cumulus
clouds to the extent of the thunderstorm cloud. The earliest time we
see thunderstorms starting is around 1400-1500 PDT in the Medicine
Lake area and southern Modoc County. By 1700 PDT high resolution
model expands thunderstorm potential to SW Siskiyou County and
then into the Siskiyou Mountains. By 1800 PDT the threat to the
east expands north into the Lakeview and the southern Oregon
Cascades.

Steering flow is out of the east and weak. With ample mid-level
moisture, wetting rains are possible with any storms that
form. Lightning strikes will occur outside of cores, and thus new
fires starts are expected. Drilling down for a bit more detail
regarding steering flow, areas from the Cascades west will see
slightly stronger east to west steering flow, and this may lessen
the amount of rain possible there and should help storms push off
the terrain and into West Side Valleys but moreso each day from
today through Thursday. Additionally, nighttime upper level
instability gradually increases through the week, and this suggests
better chances for nocturnal thunderstorms...which, subjectively,
are drier than daytime storms in our forecast area. We are
particularly interested in Wednesday night where energy and
instability align, especially from the Cascades westward and over
Siskiyou County.

We will be staying in touch with partner agencies regarding fuel
status changes due to any accumulation of moisture over the next
several days. For now, we expect abundant lightning on dry fuels and
we have issued Red Flag Warnings and Fire Weather Watches to
highlight this threat.

to suggest a cooling trend and a period of more stable conditions
from Saturday through early next week. Sunday could be problematic
east of the Cascades, especially for any new/existing fires, as
windy conditions are possible with low humidity ahead of the
