.UPDATE...An update was just sent to adjust pops, weather, and sky
grids to current trends. Light to moderate showers have developed
over portions of northern Modoc and southern Lake counties as an
upper shortwave moves through this morning. Latest HRRR guidance
shows this area drifting west into Klamath County and possibly far
eastern Siskiyou County over the next few hours. I also removed
the thunder from the forecast this morning as there hasn't been
any lightning with this wave overnight, and things seem pretty
stable right now. It will start to destabilize again as the sun
comes up, so the forecast for later today remains unchanged.

PREV DISCUSSION... /Issued 412 AM PDT Mon Aug 7 2017/
DISCUSSION...Extreme heat dominated our weather last week with
subtle day-to-day variations. A different but what will also be
an unusually persistent pattern developed Sunday and will continue
through Thursday with above normal but not extreme heat, and
scattered thunderstorms as its main characteristics. Also of note
will be a pattern of night and morning coastal low clouds and
patchy fog. There will be relatively little day- to- day change
with a rex block of a ridge over the Pacific Northwest and a
trough wobbling over far northern California.
The thunderstorms that developed on Sunday produced copious
lightning with highly variable amounts of rainfall. The large
majority of thunderstorms occurred over northern California with a
noteworthy minority of activity over the southern Oregon Cascades.
Several sites reported a trace to a few hundredths of an inch of
rain while some mountain sites received more than a half inch.
The thunderstorms were also noteworthy for remaining largely
anchored to the higher terrain with light winds aloft.
The change in the pattern today will be a slight retrograde shift
of the trough which will result in a more uniform and slightly
stronger north to northeast 700mb steering flow at 5 to 15 mph.
This should be sufficient to produce greater movement and coverage
of storms this afternoon and evening. Lightning strikes will
likely have their highest concentration in Siskiyou and Modoc
Counties again, but an uptick in activity is expected for Lake,
Klamath, Jackson, and eastern Douglas Counties.
Further retrogression on Tuesday will produce a decrease in
mainly easterly steering winds with storms likely to be anchored
to the higher terrain.
Tuesday night into Wednesday morning still shows the best chance
for overnight convection with a stronger shortwave rotating into
our area from the south then tracking offshore with an increasing
easterly steering flow. As such, thunderstorms may make it
to the coast or briefly offshore...especially south of Cape
Blanco. This southeast to east flow aloft is likely to persist on
Wednesday. Confidence is now higher that conditions on Thursday
will show little change from the preceding several days.
Forecast uncertainty increases on Friday with some but not all
models indicating a broad trough in the Gulf of Alaska will begin
to finally push the lingering trough through the area. The 00Z GFS
does show decent consistency with last night's run and its timing
would place a continued chance of thunderstorms over the northern
and eastern portions of our area and northeastward.
The depth, speed, and track of the Alaskan trough is likely to be
the dominant driver of our weather for the weekend into early next
week. The development of onshore flow would result in a reduced
probability of and coverage of thunderstorms, but could
eventually bring a cold front. This front may or may not bring
rainfall, but it would be likely to produce gusty winds.
MARINE...Updated 230 AM PDT Monday 7 August 2017...North
winds will strengthen today with low end small craft advisory
conditions developing south of Cape Blanco. Winds will diminish
Tuesday, but choppy steep seas may affect all of the waters at
that time. Seas will then trend lower -Wright
FIRE WEATHER...Updated 230 AM Monday 7 August, 2017...Things worked
out just about exactly as expected yesterday with lots of lightning
but also some wetting rains across northern California and more
isolated storms over our Oregon zones. We recorded almost 600
lightning strikes in our forecast area yesterday with some new fire
starts noted, and given that a significant number of strikes
occurred outside the rain cores, more holdovers are probably lying
in wait.
As a result, the thinking hasn't changed much today. Looking at
water vapor imagery this morning, one might be tempted to say that
the upper low is centered over Modoc County. While that circulation
does stand out, it is likely just one of the stronger shortwaves
within a much broader gyre that encompasses much of northern
California and southern Oregon. The models almost unanimously show
the center of the upper low gradually retrograding offshore over the
next 48 hours, and while the movement of closed upper lows is
notoriously difficult to predict, it's hard to argue with model
consensus.
As the low wobbles back west, moisture, instability, and forcing
will be pretty good over our entire area. Storms are likely to be
more focused over the mountains today as terrain forcing from broad
easterly upslope flow is enhanced by subtle synoptic features, but
all areas inland from the coast could see a thunderstorm or two
today. Outside the mountains, storms are most likely to form where
skies clear and solar heating fuels instability. Current satellite
imagery shows a significant amount of mid cloud over much of our
area, so it is difficult to say where this clearing may occur. As a
result, we've confined the greatest thunderstorm threat to the
mountains and kept lower pops over the valleys. Like yesterday,
steering flow is weak, which means that storms that do form are
likely to produce wetting (possibly heavy) rains under their cores.
Also like yesterday, lightning will occur outside these cores which
may result in new starts. A red flag warning remains in effect to
cover these concerns.
For the remainder of the week, the low is expected to wobble over
our area. All guidance continues to suggest the potential for
scattered thunderstorms over much of our area through at least
Thursday. The focus would be over the mountains and east side, but
the west side may also see storms at times. It's also not out of the
question that storms continue into the night or make it out to the
coast at times. In fact, the GFS is now hinting at the possibility
of nocturnal storms over the west side Tuesday night into Wednesday.
It is the only one doing this, but it is often the only model that
catches onto nocturnal storms in our area. This is just something to
keep an eye on. Suffice it to say, much of our area will be under
the gun for thunderstorms much of this week. -Wright
