.DISCUSSION...Morning update. main concern today is the band of
clouds moving in from the south and its effect of heating. Current
thoughts are that there will be a short pause in heating, but then
the clouds will continue to move north, resulting in a possible
couple of degrees lower that the current forecast highs. Sven

DISCUSSION...The weather today, and in fact that of the next
several days, will resemble yesterday's conditions with the
important exception of the development of isolated to scattered
afternoon and evening thunderstorms...and the likely development
of lightning caused wildfires. The consistent conditions include
coastal low clouds and fog (retreating to the beaches with partial
improvement in the afternoon hours), areas of smoky skies,
moderate/near normal to locally breezy afternoon winds, and
temperatures a few to a dozen degrees above normal.
A weak but relatively broad upper trough is offshore from
California. This will bring a southerly component to the winds
aloft and lead to increased instability and the arrival of mid-
level moisture. There is high confidence in the thunderstorm
forecast for the next 3 days, then differences in the expected
track of the trough beyond Monday lead to higher uncertainty in
the location of additional thunderstorms as well as uncertainty
regarding the duration of this pattern. Moderate uncertainty at
mid-week increases further beginning Thursday. As far as what is
expected with a high degree of confidence, partly cloudy and hazy
skies due to upper level clouds and smoke will keep limit
heating slightly and likely shave 1 to 3 degrees of off of what
high temperatures would be otherwise. This will hinder but not
prevent the development of thunderstorms this afternoon then
activity will likely increase this evening with the arrival of a
shortwave from the south-southwest. The highest amounts of
instability and available moisture are expected to extend from
Lassen County northward into eastern Modoc County with isolated
thunderstorms also in southern Siskiyou County and roughly east of
Highway 97 and Klamath Falls in the southern halves of Klamath
and Lake Counties.
The probability of thunderstorms and the size of the area to
receive them will increase on Sunday afternoon and evening.
Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected across Siskiyou
and Modoc Counties and also roughly from the Siskiyou and Cascade
Mountains of southern Oregon across south central Oregon with the
highest probability for thunderstorms to develop over the higher
terrain. These storms will be high based and except for the cores
of the strongest storms, there will not be much rainfall. The
threat of thunderstorms is expected to gradually diminish rather
than abruptly end after sunset on Sunday night as shortwaves
continue to rotate around the upper low.
It is roughly the same scenario for Monday although with a
continued broadening of the area with at least a slight chance of
thunderstorms. It will likely include Josephine and the remainder
of Jackson County as well as into eastern Douglas County,
including Medford and Grants Pass.
By Tuesday, there is higher uncertainty in where the upper trough
will wobble. But, it will likely still be in the vicinity and
continue a slight chance to chance of thunderstorms for a portion
of our area at least through Thursday and possibly through the
remainder of the week.
.AVIATION...05/12Z TAF CYCLE...VFR will prevail through the TAF
period for inland TAF sites, but local visibility reductions are
possible due to wildfire smoke. IFR to LIFR cigs/vis in fog and low
clouds will affect most of the coastal waters, the immediate coast
and some of the coastal valleys this morning. However, do expect
some clearing back to the immediate coast will occur this afternoon.

MARINE...Updated 230 AM PDT Saturday 5 August 2017...Relatively
light north winds and low seas will prevail through Sunday. North
winds will gradually strengthen early next week with potentially
hazardous conditions developing, especially for small craft, south
of Cape Blanco. -Wright
FIRE WEATHER...Updated 230 AM Saturday 5 August, 2017...The heat
will gradually lessen today and Sunday, but it will still remain
hotter and drier than normal. Winds will also be less than the
past few days, so fire weather conditions will become a little
less extreme. That said, a very dry airmass remains aloft over the
region, and this dry air will settle in over the mountains and
result in continued poor humidity recoveries. Higher terrain areas
will likely see overnight humidity values only in the 20-30
percent range this weekend.
Attention now turns to the increasing thunderstorm threat over our
area. Moisture will increase substantially today as monsoonal
moisture surges in from the south. Much of the area will remain
too stable for thunderstorms today, but models show a strong
disturbance moving over northeast California this afternoon, which
will likely trigger some storms. A Red Flag Warning for abundant
lightning on dry fuels remains in effect for this afternoon and
evening over Modoc County (fire weather zone 285).
Tomorrow, an upper trough takes up a position off the northern
California coast and then very slowly drifts inland over northern
California or southern Oregon through next week. Consistency in
this pattern is very good, and this is a pattern that is
conducive to thunderstorm activity over the entire area. A Fire
Weather Watch for abundant lightning remains in effect for
tomorrow for portions of Northern California and high terrain
areas from the Siskiyous and Cascades eastward.
Storms may eventually be able to drift out across west side areas
as well. Confidence is high that moisture will be sufficient for
storms over much of the area by Monday, but there is some
uncertainty in surface instability due to increasing clouds and
smoke in the area, potentially lowering surface temperatures. As
for a trigger for storms, the mountains often act as their own
trigger, so multiple rounds of thunderstorms are probable in the
mountains from tomorrow through next week.
For the rest of the area, shortwaves rotating around the upper low
will generally be required to induce any storms, and confidence in
timing and location of these features is much lower. Nevertheless,
all of our northern California and southern Oregon zones inland
from the coast are liable to see considerable lightning over the
next week. Given the record dry fuels in much of the area and
above normal temperatures continuing, abundant lightning strikes
(even when rain accompanies some storms) will cause fire starts.
The upcoming week has the potential to be a very active fire
