.DISCUSSION...We are now entering the second day of the weeklong
episode of hot weather. New model runs show no major changes so
105-110 range for the valleys west of the Cascades, with 100
likely for the east side valleys. There will again be afternoon
cumulus buildups. Coverage will be isolated and confined mainly to
the mountains. Forecast soundings for points in the Cascades and
the Warners show enough instability with some CAPE values. Since
we are under a strong ridge, the warming aloft will help to cap
the buildups and we may end up with some deep cumulus clouds but
with few cloud to ground strikes.
On Wednesday, the thermal trough will shift inland and this is the
basis of the Rogue Valley seeing the hottest temperature of the
week. The will also lead to stronger valley winds which combined
with very low humidity could lead to significant fire weather
issues. The coast can also expect a wind reversal Wednesday night
into Thursday with winds turning southerly and return of stratus
low clouds.
Next chance for a more organized thunderstorm potential is around
Saturday when models show higher 700-500 layered relative

over the near shore waters near Brookings, VFR conditions prevail.
Cannot rule out very brief and shallow cloud/fog layer along the
rest of the coast or in some coastal valleys this morning, but
this is unlikely. Gusty north winds will be the primary concern late
this morning through this evening.
Inland...VFR will continue throughout the TAF period, with the
exception of areas of smoke in the vcty of wildfires, where
visibilities could drop to less than a mile. This will be most
prevalent in northern Jackson County, western Siskiyou County, Modoc
County, Southern Lake County, and over the Cascades. Additionally,
there is a very slight chance of thunderstorms over the Cascades and

A strong long wave ridge will remain parked over the area through
Thursday. The ridge will begin to weaken and drift slowly east
Friday, but it will remain the dominant weather driver over the
area into next week.
Overall, this means very hot weather for the inland areas.
Records will likely fall, and Medford will near it's all time
high Wednesday. An Excessive Heat Warning and Heat Advisories at
NPWMFR remain in effect through Friday afternoon.
The thermal trough will oscillate between the coast in the night
into morning hours and the west side during the afternoons and
evenings through tonight. A Chetco effect is underway in the
Brookings area, and it will be quite warm there today. The trough
will then move inland for a spell Wednesday. This will correspond
to the hottest day over the west side with cooler temperatures at
the coast as onshore flow returns to the area. The trough will
then move on to the east side Thursday. It will cool a few degrees
over the west side Thursday as a bit of onshore flow returns to
the area, but the east side will remain about as hot as Wednesday.
Inland temperatures will continue to cool Friday as what is left
of the thermal trough moves out of the area and onshore flow
strengthens a bit. Meanwhile, another thermal trough will form
near the coast.
The other near-term concern is thunderstorms. There were some
buildups east of the Cascades Monday afternoon and evening, but no
strikes. As might be expected with such intense surface heating,
it will get unstable in the afternoons and evenings, but
subsidence associated with high pressure aloft will inhibit
activity at the same time. Lifted indices indicate that the most
unstable conditions will occur Tuesday afternoon and evening,
while Wednesday and Thursday will be more stable. Friday will see
an increase in instability. The next question is available
moisture. There was sufficient moisture for some buildups Monday
afternoon and evening. Time sections indicate that the subsidence
will cap any activity on the west side, but some cells may break
through on the east side and Siskiyou county Tuesday. Those same
time sections show very dry conditions aloft over the west side,
with some available moisture aloft over the east side and Siskiyou
county. Therefore, will go with a slight chance of thunderstorms
over those areas today and Wednesday. The best chances for
Thursday look to be skewed to Siskiyou and Modoc counties as
additional moisture creeps up from the Sierra, so will emphasize
those areas Thursday.
Extended discussion from the Monday afternoon AFD...Friday through
Monday. The probability of thunderstorms will increase late in the
week into early next week as an eastward shift of the ridge allows
a southerly flow to develop and gradually takes an edge off the
extreme heat...retreating to merely very hot with highs likely to
still be above 100 degrees for most west side valleys and the
lower 90s on the east side. While these thunderstorms would be
much more likely to produce at least moderate rainfall amounts
than any thunderstorms from now into Thursday, the much greater
frequency of lightning has a significant risk of starting new
fires.

FIRE WEATHER...Updated 300 AM Tuesday 1 August, 2017...Very hot
and dry conditions will continue away from the coast for most of
the week with near record breaking heat Tuesday through Thursday.
The magnitude of the heat on each of these days is expected to be
the hottest in the last 25 years. This will be of high concern for
crews involved in firefighting efforts and it is highly
recommended they stay hydrated and take steps to avoid heat
exhaustion or even heat stroke. Even crews in the higher
elevations will not be immune to the heat with afternoon
temperatures expected to be in the 90s with little relief at
night.
The thermal trough is expected to hover west of the Cascades the
next few days resulting in at least Haines 5 conditions with
Haines 6 more than likely over the fires. Red Flag warnings are in
effect for Tuesday for this. Also Fire Weather Watches have been
issued for Wednesday through Thursday for gusty winds and low
humidity for much of the West Side. The combination of very low
humidity (day and night) and breezy conditions warrants a heads up
for this. Please see RFWMFR for more details on all of the warnings
and watches. Even in areas not covered by watches or warnings,
high Haines and very hot and dry conditions can be expected through
the rest of the week.
Thunderstorms...Models show increasing instability and moisture in
portions of Northern California and the Cascades with weak
shortwaves moving across these areas late this afternoon and
evening. This could be enough to trigger a storm or two, but with
such dry air above the surface, any sustained convection is
doubtful.
Meanwhile, the thermal trough will remain along the coast,
resulting in breezy east to northeast winds near and at the ridges
in portions of Fire zones 618, 619 and 280 this morning with
moderate recoveries. While not quite as strong, northeast winds will
remain gusty and recoveries will trend worse tonight with locally
poor humidity recoveries. Offshore winds will become noticeably
weaker Wednesday night but recoveries will be nearly as poor as the
previous couple of nights.
Practically no thunderstorms are expected Wednesday. Both the ECMWF
and GFS show a weak upper trough approaching the California coast
Thursday night through Friday which could tap into some monsoonal
moisture. This in combination with multiple shortwaves moving into
our area could bring an increased chance of thunderstorms and its
not out of the question we could be dealing with nocturnal storms
Thursday night with more thunderstorms possible Friday and Friday
night. Keep in mind it's still a ways out and the details on where
the best chance for thunderstorms will be are likely to change in
upcoming days, but given the high fire danger, this is something
