Light freezing rain, freezing drizzle or sleet may move into north Mississippi late tonight and early Sunday morning, producing light accumulations of ice on bridges and other exposed objects. The light wintry precipitation will likely exit by late Sunday morning. Bitter cold Arctic air will arrive to the Midsouth Sunday night. By sunrise Monday, wind chills will range from -5 to -10 north of Interstate 40, to zero to -5 to the south of Interstate 40. Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Memphis TN 1128 PM CST Fri Dec 29 2017 .UPDATE...Aviation Discussion. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 853 PM CST Fri Dec 29 2017/ DISCUSSION... Clouds have moved into much of the Mid-South tonight. So have adjusted sky and temperatures across the Mid-South for tonight. Changes are minor. Some models still bringing some precipitation late tonight to southwest portion of area, probability still low, however, still have the weather in the grid, if anything does fall there should be no accumulations. TLSJr PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 211 PM CST Fri Dec 29 2017/ Skies were mostly sunny across the region...with the exception of the far northwest corner...winds were light and temperatures were finally above freezing area wide. Current readings this hour ranged form the mid 30s north to mid 40s south. For tonight through Monday...the next large blast of arctic air will infiltrate the region this period. Boundary layer moisture seen off to the west coupled with a few more hours of WAA will swing east ahead the approaching cold front tonight. Questions arise with the thickness of this layer and it's timing. For now believe temperatures will fall to near or just below freezing...potentially triggering light patchy drizzle or freezing drizzle after midnight. Little if any impacts expected. Have issued a Special Weather Statement to address this slight possibility. The cold frontal passage will take place midday tomorrow with temperatures falling throughout the afternoon. All but the far southern counties will have dropped back into the 20s by mid evening. Another surge of moisture will shift north from the Lower Mississippi River Valley tomorrow night...with the slightest chance for freezing drizzle or light snow grains to reform across the far southern tier of counties through roughly mid morning Sunday. Only trace amounts of accumulations will be possible during this time frame as well. The bigger impact will be the cold for Sunday and Monday as the heart of the descending airmass will settle over the region. 925mb temperatures will range from -12C to -17C...leading to highs in the teens and low 20s and several single digit lows. Models also showing a prolonged substantial pressure gradient over the area due to the orientation of the surface high. This will lead to winds of 10 to 25 mph producing windchills to near -10F over the northern Delta counties. Even the far southeastern counties could see windchills near zero. Thus wind chill advisories will likely be needed for the region. Tuesday through Friday...temperatures will modify somewhat this period...with highs lifting to above freezing for most locations by Wednesday. But these highs will still run fifteen degrees below normal. A continued northwest flow aloft will keep the region dry through the week...with the passage of a dry cold front early Thursday keeping late week temperatures below normal. JAB && .AVIATION... Cigs may lower to MVFR levels by morning although guidance is not as bullish with that scenario than in previous runs. Surface high pressure will build in from the West tomorrow resulting in strengthening North wind during the day. Wind speeds will be 10-15kt with gusts around 18kt.
