DISCUSSION...

A few light rain showers in the Mississippi Delta counties will
remain possible along the back edge of the midlevel moisture
through midnight. In addition placed likely areas of frost in the
forecast across the entire Midsouth for late tomorrow night.

.PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 342 PM CDT Fri Oct 27 2017/

Large temperature gradient across the Midsouth this afternoon
with most of the area now in the mid 40s behind the cold front,
but northeast MS has reached the mid 70s under mostly sunny skies.
Widespread showers are occurring behind the cold front as
expected, but there has also been isolated convective activity
along the leading edge of the rainfall due to enhanced convergence
and marginal midlevel lapse rates. Isolated thunder should remain
confined to the leading edge of the rainfall and primarily in the
southern half of the forecast area. The cold front will be
through the remainder of the area by 8 PM, with temperatures
quickly falling into the 50s in northeast MS. Most of the rainfall
should be out of the area by midnight, and clouds will retreat
shortly thereafter leading to clear skies by morning. Low
temperatures tonight are expected to drop into the mid 30s for
most of the area, but due to light winds and moist soil left over
by the rain not expecting much in the way of frost.

Dry weather will persist through the weekend, but temperatures
will be cooler in the wake of the cold front with highs in the low
to mid 50s tomorrow, then the mid to high 50s on Sunday. Overnight
temperatures tomorrow are a bigger concern in terms of a freeze.
Winds should decouple with high pressure settling in overhead, and
with clear skies strong radiational cooling is expected. As a
result temperatures are expected to drop below freezing across all
of the area, with the exception of the Memphis urban heat island.
Some areas could get into the upper 20s as well, therefore the
freeze watch remains in effect. Sunday night could have some
freeze potential as well, but would likely remain confined to the
eastern sections of the forecast area.

A warm up is expected heading into next week with a return to
southerly winds and low level moisture beginning to stream back
into the area. Rain chances will also increase as a result, but
right now likely PoPs should hold off until Tuesday night. This
could be a problem for trick-or-treaters in northeastern AR.. but
in Memphis rain looks like it may hold off until after midnight.

Rainfall will remain possible across the Midsouth through the end
of the work week as a series of shortwave troughs move through the
region. Maintained only chance PoPs as confidence decreases
beyond Wednesday. However it does look to remain warm to start
November, and would not be surprised to see a couple of days reach
the 70s depending on cloud cover and rain coverage.

Lingering MVFR cigs and scattered showers at KMKL and KTUP will
quickly improve to VFR over the next few hours along with a return
to dry conditions. Elsewhere VFR conditions will persist with
clearing skies. Northwest winds will continue to gradually
diminish through the remainder of the night.

VFR conditions but increasing west-northwest winds can be expected
at all sites again on Saturday. Wind speeds in excess of 8 kts can
be expected. Stratocumulus should also develop across the region
and cigs could flirt with MVFR conditions at KMKL by late morning
through the afternoon.

Skies will clear at all sites Saturday evening with light winds.
