.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front over central Pennsylvania will cross the Mid-
Atlantic region late this morning, then stall to the south as
low pressure rides along it into the Mid Atlantic tonight before
moving rapidly offshore Thursday. High pressure and cooler
temperatures will return Thursday night and Friday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /TODAY/...

2 am on Feb 8 and almost all temperatures are above 60 degrees.
Seven years ago tonight I was also on midnight shift and we had
snow banks in our parking lot 5 feet high. Tonight I took my
observation outside wearing a t-shirt.

Yesterday saw daily high temperature records absolutely
decimated. IAD by 7 degrees, BWI by 8, and DCA by 9. The records
for DC and Balt go back to 1871.

Change is on the way, but it will be slow. Low pressure is
centered over southern Ontario with an attedant cold front
across northwest Pennsylvania. This is visible on radar as a
fine line of rain showers. Even behind the front it isn't very
cold.

But this front is expected to move into the Mid Atlantic during
the mid to late morning. Still, it will be another day of well
above average temperatures, especially given the high starting
point we're seeing. While yesterday all major observation sites
got into the 70s today will still be in the 60s - possibly 70 in
the central Shenandoah Valley.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...

The front will sag south of the area this evening, but in the
overall fast upper level flow a shortwave trough will cause an
area of low pressure to form...reaching far SW VA around
00Z...northern VA by 06Z...moving rapidly off the NJ coast by
12Z. This will cause precipitation to spread over the entire
area tonight. Precipitation type gets tricky as colder air flows
into the region. The 130 DM line of the 850-1000 thickness is
my usual determinator...and the models are in good agreement of
placing the sub-130 line from Washington Co. northward at
06Z...along a line from Balt-SHD by 09Z...and into lower
southern MD by 12Z. Behind that line rain will be changing to
snow.

We currently have a winter storm watch in effect. I am not going
to alter this but I feel the possiblity of 5" is tenuous at
best. North of the Mason-Dixon line - yes. But in addition to
having marginal temperatures - and given the last two days (MD
road temps currently in upper 50s), the intial round of
snowfall will melt on contact, AND the low will be moving
rapidly off the coast making the time where snow can accumulate
fairly short. The watch will likely be changed to advisories by
mid morning, with the possibility of low-end warnings needing to
be issued along the MD-PA border.

The Highlands will probably work out differently. We have
struggled over what to do - the western slopes certainly look
like they will be close to warning levels...but this will be
over a lengthy period of time. Criteria for warning would be 8"
in 24 hours. We see a combination of advisories and warnings
to our north and west, but at this moment will hold with the
watch and let the dayshift make the decision.

By midday Thursday the only snow concerns will over the
Highlands where it will likely continue through the day. Highs
Thursday will be 25 degrees colder than today...in some spots 35
degrees colder than Tuesday.

Thursday night high pressure builds into the area causing
northwest winds over 20 mph. Wind chills below zero will be
possible in the Highlands.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Changeable weather expected late in the week, through the weekend,
and into next week.

High pressure will briefly settle across the southeastern US for the
first half of Friday, sliding offshore by late in the day. At the
same time, a warm front will be pushing across the Ohio Valley and
will pass near the region late Friday and Friday night. Thus Friday
will feature below normal temperatures with increasing clouds late
in the day as warm air advection develops. Highs likely remaining in
the 30s to around 40F. Southerly flow will then develop by Friday
night. Lows Friday night in the 20s to low 30s.

Frontal boundary then looks to set up near or just north of the
region over the weekend before pushing back southward as a cold
front by early next week. GFS/ECMWF differ on placement and
northward progression of front, but both depict greatest rain
chances again north of the region, with the region largely in the
warm sector for Saturday/Sunday. Depending on frontal placement, may
be some showers near the region, but best rain chances would likely
come as surface low pushes northeastward and the cold front crosses
the region. Temperatures will moderate significantly again, with
highs back into the 50s Saturday and possibly a return to the 60s
Sunday.

High pressure moves back in behind the front for early next week,
with cooler, albeit still above normal temperatures.

.AVIATION /10Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
VFR conditions today...possibly dropping into MVFR after
midnight through mid morning Thursday. Gusty northwest winds
Thursday afternoon/night.

VFR expected on Friday under high pressure, with low chances for sub-
VFR conditions as a frontal boundary will be near the region on
Saturday and Sunday. Northwest winds to start Friday will turn
south/southwest Saturday and Sunday.

.MARINE...
Wide range of wind speeds being seen on the Bay/Potomac at the
moment. These are expected to diminish slightly over the next
several hours but we'll be keeping our eyes on the winds.

Gale conditions likely for portions of the waters Thu afternoon
and night under strong NW flow.

SCA winds out of the west/northwest likely to start Friday morning
will taper down by Friday afternoon. However, winds will increase
again for the Friday night through Sunday time period out of the
south/southwest with SCA conditions possibly returning.
